This deal is only for new members. So long as your previous membership expired, you are considered a new member and the deal will work.
If your membership is renewing soon, you might consider opening another Prime membership under a spouse/family-member’s account and locking in the discount that way. (Some have even had success chatting with Amazon and getting buying the $79 rate the coming year with getting a prorated refund on the remaining membership from the year before. YMMV.) Purchasing this deal also worked for a returning customer.

If I did this and shared my PRIME with my brother would he be able to use all the features of PRIME or will his PRIME be limited?
Not all features can be shared AFAIK.
There is a 7.11$ tax charge which makes this not so good deal.
Although a good deal, the Amazon Prime sale still doesn’t justify it for me. Their free Prime movies are mostly violent or inane entertainment junk. Time better spent elsewhere. Prime free shipping encourages buying things you don’t really need. So a pass from me.

After going the whole year w/o prime (subscription ran out in Jan),
I jumped back in with this $79 offer.
this would almost tempt me IF they’d let me use Amazon gift cards to pay for the membership fee. Has that policy been changed?

If you’re a current customer though with an active subscription, your prorated amount to cancel vs what you may potentially renew at and the risk of not being recognized as a new customer, just be careful. My Prime membership just renewed a month ago 🙁
The $79 price just worked for me as a returning member! My membership ended 3 weeks ago. Hopefully it works for others who also waited!
