[Expired] Office Depot/Max: Mastercard Gift Cards, Save $15 When You Buy $300 [8/18-8/24]

Deal has expired, view more Office Depot deals by clicking here.

The Offer

  • Office Depot/Max stores are offering a $15 instant discount when you buy $300 in Mastercard gift cards.

The Fine Print

  • Limit 1 per household/business
  • Discount applies at register
  • Valid 8/18 – 8/24/19
  • Purchase fees may apply

Our Verdict

Either purchase two $200 cards or one $200 and one $100. The variable load $20-$500 cards are cash only so won’t work. Normally you can do this deal multiple times in different transactions but YMMV based on cashier.

Nice to see this OM/OD deal return. $10 doesn’t completely wipe out the purchase fees, but it comes close.  Make sure to use a credit card that earns at a high rate at office supply stores. Some people have an Amex Offer for $5 off $25 too.

Title and image say Mastercard and $15 off. Article (which Chuck copy/pasted from a previous deal) says Visa and $10 off.

Way to go reusing the same words from previous posts! …The only problem is the terms are different this time:)

Can you buy three $100 mcgc’s?

chatoor
chatoor

you could buy 3 $100, 6 $50, 12 $25 as long as total is $300 you will get $15 off..

JuicyJosh

Probably, but why? You would try it from a moneymaker into a slight loser.

MickeyMouse

Not necessarily, I’ve seen $100’s with a $4.95 fee which would still be a $0.15 MM before factoring whatever CC rewards you get. 😉

One reason would be Christmas/Birthday gifts which may be good for some people, not the other 99.5% of readers.

Another would be that their local store has no 200’s in stock so $100’s are the only way to go. I did that once on the last day of an OD deal like this just to get the 5x points because the store had only $100 VGC/MCGC left. For me 1500 UR was worth at least 1.5x Face Value because I transfer to SW and Hyatt so it’s $22.50 profit.

If you were truly generous, you would just give the $200 VGCs as a gift, and not skimp and give only $100 ones.

Steve

Better than nothing, if the store is out of stock of $200s.

How?

Do they allow you to use VGC to buy this? I am thinking to combine previously purchased 4 $100 GC to 2 $200 GCs. Thanks.

EDWNY

Usually stores will not allow you to buy GCs with GCs but YMMV on store and cashier. Don’t hurt to try I guess.

Steve

We’re talking about Visa GC here, not store GC. I think it’s rare that Visa GC is not accepted, although there does seem to be some kind of restriction at Office Depot as mentioned in my other comment (though possibly that’s a generic restriction related to swipe cards vs. chip cards).

My local OD doesn’t allow split transactions.

MickeyMouse
MickeyMouse

Usually OD doesn’t allow split payment especially with gift cards but yes you may buy a gift card using a gift card their POS allows it. If you had like a $500 or $300 VGC that’d be fine but (4) $100’s for (2) $200’s most likely would not be allowed by cashier.

Steve

I bought 2 $200 MCGCs and some bottled water, and asked to split the payment with $100 on a Metabank VGC, rest on a credit card. The cashier typed in $100, but when I swiped the VGC it only put the amount of the non-GC items on that card (around $6).

I’m not sure if it was because the VGC had to be swiped vs. inserting a chip card, or if the register checks for specific card numbers to not allow VGCs to be used for MCGCs, or maybe it was because I ran the VGC as credit instead of debit (I hit cancel when asked to enter a PIN); if you’re going to try, maybe try debit.

This and the Giant 2x on MCGC is a great win finally

Has the issue of constant hacking of these cards been solved?

After much hassle, I’ve learned to stay away from MGC due to their vulnerability. Glad others have had some success with them, but they aren’t worth my time. Too much of a problem for me in my area. And, even when you’ve successfully tested some, you can get hit with problems. All depends on how much time you have and patience in dealing with them.

Eric

The vulnerability of MCGC were with the USB MCGCs but that was a long ago. I would say within the last 2 years, the USB MCGCs resolved their issue. However Staples and OD now sell the MB MCGCs and no longer sell USB MCGCs anymore. I don’t think it is a big deal anymore.

why are these cc deals not posted in their weekly ads or even on their website?

Jeff

So they can pull it midweek whenever they see fit in case of abuse/issues/who knows. They’ve done so before.

Check your AMEX offers. I had gotten an offer for $5 off $25 purchase at office supply stores.

Good point, I’ll add a note.

Can these be used for Walmart Billpay?

Any card linked program has cash back on OfficeDepot? Yelp is not working any more.

Don’t give your rewards number. I did one transaction fine (2x $200) then the cashier was trying to do another one with my rewards number and it would not accept payment and I tried other cards also. I have a feeling it would have worked if I didn’t give my rewards number. I don’t think these earn rewards anyway..

Champ
Champ

I’m wondering if the rewards # activated the “one per customer” rule.

Elijah
Elijah

I did 2 transactions today at different times and used my rewards number both times. At first it seemed like the second time it didn’t trigger the $15 off but after getting past the select receipt method screen it dropped the 15.

TheMonkeyTech
TheMonkeyTech

I bought 10 cards with my rewards #, it doesnt matter. I only give them the number so the cashier doesnt waste time trying to convince me to sign up for an account.

MGC hardly worth my time anymore due to fraud possibilities and my only reliable grocery place to liquidate these dried up this past spring. Would rather not mess around with the WM trick so hard pass for me. Hopefully a VGC deal is around the corner soon.

James Bond

+1…….more difficult to liquidate and must liquidate quickly to avoid fraud issues!

Possibly interesting DP: loaded two of these to BB @ WM successfully. Attempting to load another to GreenServe resulted in a “Tender Not Allowed” error. Loaded it to GreenServe @ DG without issue. I seem to remember a similar issue with MCGC last time I tried to load GreenServe @ WM a few weeks back as well.

raekwon
raekwon

Confirming that GreenServe cannot be loaded @ WM with MCGC, but Bluebird still can. Also, GreenServe can still be loaded @ DG (and I’m assuming FD) with MCGC.

Y’all might’ve already known this, but I’m still relatively new to this game.

What area did you test this from?

raekwon
raekwon

Not sure if by “area” you mean area of the store or geographic area, so I’ll give both answers… Money Services and central OH.
