[Expired] Office Depot/Max: Purchase $300 In Mastercard Giftcards & Get $15 Off Instantly [Valid 9/9-9/15)

Deal has expired, view current Office Depot/Max deals here.

The Offer

No direct link, but being advertised in store

  • Office Depot/Max is offering an instant discount of $15 when you purchase $300 or more in Mastercard gift cards

The Fine Print

  • Valid until September 15th, 2018
  • Limit of one
  • Discount applies at register

Our Verdict

Make sure to use a credit card that earns at a high rate on office supply stores. $200 gift cards come with a $6.95 fee, the best way to maximize this deal is to purchase two $200 gift cards, you’ll pay $13.9 in fees so come out $1.1 ahead before taking into account rewards points. Really only worth doing if using a card that earns at a high rate on office supply stores. Now the games begin, have they fixed previous issues with the discount applying multiple times at register?

If you have a Wells Fargo card, check to see if you’re eligible for up to 50% back at Office Depot/Max as well.

Does the discount still trigger on a single card?

Are these the MasterCard gift cards that are difficult to cash out at Walmart?

Ray

Yes

Brett
Brett

Why are these difficult to cash out?

Radster
Radster

They automatically run as credit, and not debit. There is a work-around if you google it.

Jeff
Jeff

Work around is real simple. If you’re doing multiple cards on one MO, swipe the card before you tell them to enter the $200.00 amount for that card, this allows you time to select the “cancel” button and change to debit. If you swipe after they enter the amount of your split tender payment you will not be fast enough to hit the “cancel” button and change to debit.

If you’re doing 1 card per MO just swipe, press the red “cancel” button on the screen once it appears in the bottom right and switch to debit.

Why wont you do one GC per money order? And whats the problem with running this as credit – does it get declined?

Well, here we go again.

Jeez, I need a break from all this plastic and cardboard action – they’re killing me!

For the plastiq masterpass can we make multiple payments to the same bill i.e payments of $250 to pay a bill more than $250.

whodidntante
whodidntante

Yes, but the recipient might not like several micro payments or could screw up the handling. It’s a good idea to monitor closely to make sure the correct amounts are credited.

Still working on getting rid of 17k of VGC from last weeks Staples deal so pass.

GL
GL

Wow $17k. I got $2k and I thought that’s insane already lol.

CM

I wanted to get 2k, but they said they had a limit of 1k. Got 1k for 10% AmEx, had to visit another store for the other 1k — did a split payment for WF $280 and the rest on AmEx SimplyCash Plus no problem.

Credit

I got $400. What’s to say the staples managers are not buying everything themselves? Two stores never had any stock.

Jan B
Jan B

Actually, there may have been sufficient stock. One staffer looked at the rack and didn’t care when asked. The cashier, however, being a bit more diligent, left her register and walked right over to the rack and got me an unopened celephaned covered pack of multiples. Best service ever!

Hey, how were you able to get the WF offer on 2 cards? I had the student one from a while back that had the offers, so I opened a Propel just because I heard it can be done.

Thanks

CM

I only have one card; 25% makes it 280. Not everyone got 50%!

Elmer
Elmer

Is there a limit on the WF 25% discounts? I didn’t see one in the fine print of any of the vendor specific offers (OD/OM, Staples, Macy’s, etc) or on the general T&C for the Go Far Rewards offers page. I also have the 25% cash back offers.

Chris
Chris

Yes as soon as you click on each offer the big print on top specifies the limit. 25% for me and I have a 7k point limit for each offer.

Jan B
Jan B

There is a CB max bonus number assigned to each retail offer. Mine was $70. Sometimes less is more.

Elmer
Elmer

Thanks. Found it in the inner headlines. Must’ve missed it earlier.

Skaner

I’m in a major east coast city and most stores allowed 2k per visit.

Bill
Bill

I have a store that specifically will only allow one. The only saving grace is when the cards are hidden inside the display, I’ve been able to still get a few as the week goes on.

Am I correct in my understanding that OD/OM reports L3 data to Amex?

whodidntante
whodidntante

Yes they do.

Oz
Oz

That is why I got that fraud text message. Thanks for the enlightenment…

CtownBin
CtownBin

Yes they do. However, reports so far have been that this is only a problem with regards to minimum spend for signup bonuses- i.e., it won’t count for that. However, it will still earn regular rewards points, even bonus points such as 5% back on the SimplyCash.

MickeyMouse
MickeyMouse

IME I did not earn the 5% on SimplyCash Card 1/2 the time. Just depends how it codes is what I was told and what I’ve seen.

Calvin
Calvin

Is L3 Data an issue for meeting minimum spend on cards not issued by Amex, but running on the Amex network?

When I’ve tried using the SimplyCash (5%) to buy GCs on Staples.com, the order has always gotten cancelled. When I’ve used my Ink Plus (5x) to do the same, it always goes through. I’ve been able to use the SimplyCash to buy legit office supplies from Staples.com with no problem.

After the last 2 rounds at OD/OM glitches, as well as the Staples from last week… I’m taking a break from liquidating via MO route. I feel like $200’s just take too much time, especially with some of the cashiers starting to decline me.

tee

same here. i just went to wally world two days ago.. and these two new customer service agents declined me. oh well. sigh.

This is exactly what I was waiting for to use my 25% WF Go Far offer.
$70+ OD’s gift
Luckily Kmart & Macy’s are also across the road from OD.

Same here! My biggest problem is that these deals are coming fast and furious and I am having trouble keeping up.

I tried to buy VGCs at Kmart in Vegas last Fri and the clerk told me “cash only.” Bummer b/c there aren’t any Kmarts in PHX.

Going to do this deal for WF Go Far Rewards $70.

Can you split payment to pay for MGCs at Office Depot?

If so, can you split between a VGC and a regular CC?

If so, do the registers auto-drain VGCs?

Thank you!!!

Circles and arrows Stores accept cash for merchandise. You pay them, they give you stuff. If you don’t pay them, and you still take stuff, you go to jail.

J

My local OD doesn’t have the ability of splitting payment using different cards.

Wow, sorry, 007. Didn’t know you asked the same question I had…

No worries. Interestingly, my local OD was already out of $200 MGC’s. Will have to try alternate locations…

Does the glitch work?

Appears to be fixed. Only triggered one $15 discount this morning.

Fixed amt or variable load?

Tom
Tom

I purchased 2 fixed amt $200 MGC. Only triggered one $15 discount. The glitch seemed to be fixed.

James B.

This promo is only for fixed amount according to the T&C.

James B.

No glitch discovered so far. Anyone else?

CM

This is absolutely crazy. I still have to get them to activate two of the prior MCGC cards.

So much for the belief that they’d never run these promotions again!

Lily
Lily

I’m still waiting for them to fix one card as well.

Ok so it was briefly talked about here but is there a way to convert those cards into cash or do i just use the cards to pay bills with?

MickeyMouse
MickeyMouse

I’d say go check Flyertalk type in VGC 😉

Abe
Abe

I tend to keep passing up on these kind of deals from Staples and Office Max/Depot unless I do minimum spend bonus requirements on credit cards. I remember last year I did a Vons Just4U double coupon and I made like $43 (with Credit card cashback) by purchasing 2 Fashion everywhere cards. That is the kind of deals that I’m looking for on GC which is rare.

is there a datapoint somewhere about stores that autodrain these mgc-s?
