Paypal Digital Gifts Removes Limits – All Bets Are Off Now

Paypal Digital Gifts seems to have removed the limit of 4 gift cards per 10 days. Conversely, their system is now buggy as ever, and it’s difficult to check out at all.

Paypal Digital Gifts (PPDG) used to have a limit of $1,000 per rolling 30-days for most people. In the past month or so, this limit was apparently removed, and they were limiting us to purchasing 4 discounted gift cards per rolling 10-days, with no limit on full-price gift cards.

In the past couple days, most people are having trouble checking on PPDG purchases at all; the system puts us in a verification loop which never ends, or it errors out and brings you back to the login page or back to eBay without completing the purchase.

However, some persistent consumers got lucky and were able to buy some of the currently discounted gift cards (myself included), and the system wasn’t enforcing any limits on the purchases. You can now buy an unlimited number of e-gift cards from PPDG…if only the system lets you check out at all.

It’s unclear at the moment if the new unlimited purchase threshold is a temporary thing, as part of the buggy system, or if it’s the new rule. I’m inclined to believe that this is a new rule since the limit-4 was enforced early on in the checkout system, when the item was added to the cart, and the limit is not showing there anymore.

As far as the glitches go, I had some success staggering the item or amount. Yesterday, I pushed through two orders with one $200 Sears gift card in each. And today, I managed to get in three orders with one $100 Sears gift card in each, and one order with a $50 Kmart gift card. That’s as much as it let me do without glitching out. Others were able to buy many more, and some couldn’t buy any at all; see reader’s experiences in the comments on the previous posts here and here.

It’s likely that they are in the middle of making a change, and that’s creating the buggy nature of the system.

Note that all these issues, both the purchase limits and the buggy nature of the Paypal system, are only for PPDG purchases. Other purchases, including discounted gift cards from other sellers, seems to be working fine without any limits or glitches. Full-price gift cards from PPDG do appear to have the glitch issues.

I bought $1,190 yesterday in one transaction after multiple issues. I have yet to receive the codes. I just talked to PPDG and apparently anything over $1000 is not emailing the codes and they’re not sure when it’ll be fixed. So, word of warning, do less than $1,000 per transaction!

Bah, mine went over $1000 by $20, and I’m not getting the codes yet. Sigh.

I had mine this morning. If you don’t, call them so they can put you on some “list”.

Not sure about the limit situation, but I got stuck in the verification loop, called in to PayPal and they were able to make some changes to the security settings of my account that got me out of the loop. Wasn’t very painful to do.

In my limited tests with this I had more problems checking out when using the cash back portals and trying to activate the eBay bucks offer. I didn’t seem to have them when I did then without it. Definitely a small sample size of two for me.

Just tried to place a new order and got the same error: “You are currently winning or have bought the maximum allowable amount of this seller’s items in the last 10 days.”

Ok, that was only on one particular gift card (Legal Sea Food). Others seem to work.

It appears that the limit is $300 per day before they throw you into the verification loop.

What are you guys going to do with all that Sears Credit? Sit on it and wait for a deal?

With the following discounts, you can just resell it on Raise.com or something (bulk sellers only have to pay Raise.com 10% of the sale price)

1. 15% off the Sears gift card from Paypal
2. 5% cashback using ink, or 5% if you buy a discounted Ebay GC from somewhere
3. 2-10% back in form of Ebay bucks
4. 2% back from Splender when using their portal.

You end up paying 20-30% below face value. Super easy to sell and make a profit.

Must be nice…if I try to place an order and want to use gift cards, I get an error message of “Oops, we’re having technical issues. Please try your code again.” Sometimes this happens on the first card, usually the second, and a few times I got several entered in.

I’ve called eBay twice about it. The first time they were going to report it to their engineers to look into. Nothing was fixed by the time they said it would be so I called again. This time they blamed it on eBay and forwarded me to them. Paypal says it was because my paypal account wasn’t verified. I went through the process and still have the same damn problem. It looks like more calls.

Anyone else getting “70245 70358 TRANSACTION_REFUSED” when clicking on the checkout button?

You’ve got to call Paypal – they’ll verify your identity and release it – I tried to get around it for a week and this was the only way to solve it. Totally fine on my end now

Guys I had a quick question.

Is it okay to use your ink card so many times? I mean if its only letting you do smaller amounts and you have to do A LOT of transactions, don’t you think PayPal or Chase itself may get suspicious what’s going on? My Ink is too valuable for me lol

I got 3 successive ID verifications each transaction, but it went through. Then after 3 different purchases, the ID verification process stopped working entirely – it just said something to the effect that my account can’t be verified.

As a side question, I make purchases for my wife and myself, one ebay account for each. I have been paying everything with one Paypal account account in my name. Would it be better to open a new Paypal in my wife’s name and keep everything separate with our ebay logins? Seems cleaner overall but I had not found a reason to do it yet.

Well, the answer is obvious and I was too slow to see it. If limits are in place (which seems very ambiguous right now), they are per PayPal account rather than ebay account, so using different paypals for my wife and I would double the limit…if it exists.

From linked article:
“The above-mentioned limits are all per Paypal account. It won’t help you to use two separate eBay accounts. Conversely, if you use two separate Paypal accounts with the one eBay account, you’ll double your limit.”

Wish what u are saying were true, but alas I get this for the available items (that I bought the max – 4 cards – already – on my existing eBay account that has the 8x EB deal) This is the error I get – beofre I get to PayPal:

This item isn’t available in the requested quantity. It may have been purchased already, or the listing has expired.

Does anyone know if the “workaround” to using more than five gift cards per transaction is still valid? I believe that in the past, if you used an eBay gift card to buy something that was lesser than the value of the card (i.e., use a $100 eBay gift card to buy a $1 item), the balance on the gift card would be “loaded” onto your PayPal account (in this case, $99 would be attached to your PayPal account) – which would then allow you to build a balance in your PayPal account and theoretically use value from an unlimited number of eBay gift cards for a given transaction.

Now, when I try to do the above, eBay deducts the value of the purchase from my gift card directly ($1 taken off of the $100 card), so I am left with a gift card with a lower value ($99 in this case), instead of the balance being attached to my PayPal account. For the next transaction, when I enter in the code for the gift card, I get the residual value ($99) from the gift card applied to my transaction.

Am I doing something wrong? Has anyone else noticed this?

I think the limit is back. After purchasing 4 of the $100 gift cards from them, I could not place another order…

Cowboyguy
Cowboyguy

Yes, and they pulled the $200 sears GCs as well. It was fun while it lasted. I only did $2000 in total, across SO and my accounts. Did that in 6-7 transactions. I could have done more but decided to stop.

PPDG didn’t “pull” the $200 Sears GC – they just got sold out

Rick

That’s nice… I did not even get to purchase any of the $200 sears GCs. I kept getting errors yesterday and today it was sold out 🙁

I dont know if they ever seriously tried to fix anything. Endless loop trying to make simple purchase. Screw ’em, they can keep their gcs.

There are still restrictions for me.

Finally I was able to get through the three verifications, but then got:

You’ve reached a temporary buying restriction. Please contact us if you need more information
Error code: 70226

I was trying to buy 4 $100 southwest cards. I already purchased 4 discount PPDG under $300 today.
