The Fine Print

Our Verdict
This has been as low as $74.99 in the past and most recently was $90. You can view the difference between free and paid here. Plex is basically a media server solution, make sure to check the features to see if you actually need the paid version or not.
Will this work with a hotel cable connection for a long term stay?
Depends on your server and upload speed mostly. I’d say probably, but if you’re trying to do 4k Dolby vision it can be hard. It can be finicky, but it should be fine at 1080 on most setups and connections.
The last time that I tried this, their FireTV app was very basic.
Not worth using. Has it improved at all?
did they unban hetzner?
What is it?
worth every penny
the deal is back! code ITSPROTIME for 20% off for total of $95.99 until Sep 22nd
What I enjoy about Plex is that you have access to all of your content (music, photos, movies, etc.) from one app. If you go on vacation you can download the media to your device (really great for road trips with kids). It does take some work up front i.e. ripping movies (use Make MKV which is free), etc. but once that is in place it is fantastic. As for live TV, as others have said, you have to get a TV tuner (HD Homerun is what I use) and an antenna. The commercial scrubbing does a pretty good job and they are always adding new features. A good tip is to rent a movie from the library, rip it to Plex and then it is available when you want to watch it.
I have a Synology NAS setup where Plex runs so all of my media is automatically backed up. I did this after a hard drive died and I didn’t want to go through the hassle again. Love that I am able to put the family home movies on there so we can watch them instead of them sitting on hard drive never to be seen. It is pretty straightforward to set up if you are comfortable with technology. Also great for sharing media with grandparents, family, etc. Let me know if you have any questions – I have been using it for years.
Thsi is worth it. I paid $129 a couple years back for lifetime subscription. It allows me to record indefinitely record seasons of TV shows with click of a button. (Using Mac Mini M1 with 8TB HDD as server / home computer .. Silicon Dust dual channel ATSC network tuner.)
I just love Plex. That is all. (And I, too, am anxious that something this good can last as is.)
I’ve already bought a Lifetime Plex Pass, but ultimately what I fear is without a consistent revenue stream of people signing up for monthly services, whats going to keep Plex going long term?
Absolutely nothing.
A lifetime pass for a dying medium only lasts until the dying medium dies, so enjoy it before it does.
Is Plex dying as a medium? The convenience factor of Plex as a home streaming / remote streaming solution for my own library is unrivaled. Though maybe lots more people are opting for 100% self management than I thought
I figure they’ll kill the lifetime pass for new signups and anyone who isn’t grandfathered will have to pay monthly. And besides, they’re still getting almost two years of subscription from you up front even with this special, it’s not like it’s a terrible perspective from their perspective.
Now, whether or not plex survives down the road is still an open question.
Jellyfin is the way lol
