- Rent.com $100 Reward Card for Leasing Apartment by Maximizing Money. Seems like a lot of work for a $100 gift card, but if you’re in the market for a new lease then this might be worth looking into. I’m more of a RadPad guy myself, but each to his own.
- My Thoughts On TravelCon And Matt’s Presentation – Why Discover It Miles Isn’t 3% by Chasing The Points. I agree with this, but I’m still happy with this card for two reasons: there is a chance I’ll be able to product change it to a regular Discover it after the year is up, I’ll get the $30 WiFi credit twice. The problem with the Discover it Miles card is that as your spend increases, your risk increases exponentially for two reasons: the more you spend the more likely you will be shut down, you have more cash back that is yet to be doubled. I’m not planning on doing a crazy amount of spend on this card, but an extra pull on TransUnion (that I can easily bump off if I want) and another app with Discover really doesn’t bother me.
- Credit Card Warranty Asset Pricing by Saverocity Finance. Another good article on pricing risk. One of my favorite Saverocity sub forums is the M.S.R.P where people help you get the lowest price on a product you want to purchase.
- Dear Uber Driver (An Open Letter) by Jetsetters Homestead. I think I’d read anything Jennifer wrote about ride sharing. Spot on about the smells in Uber cars. Nothing like the smell of somebodies feet after a long night.
- Retailers face $8.65 billion bill for new generation of credit cards by Fortune. I think this article really under estimates the positive effect EMV chips will have (adding a PIN requirement will make it even better). $8.65 billion seems like a lot of money, but keep in mind the payment networks are helping out smaller merchants and 10% of Americans are the victims of credit card fraud. PIN transactions are so important because while 37% of fraud is from counterfeit cards, another 30% is from when the card is stolen or lost.
- Credit cards breached at luxury Mandarin Oriental hotels by UPI. Another day, another credit card data breach. I think the penalties for these types of breaches need to be increased. Because at the moment it doesn’t seem like most companies are taking the risk seriously.
There were actually a bunch more articles I wanted to share from the weekend, but the post killed itself the first time I went to publish and I can’t remember the rest off the top of my head. Sorry if I missed something important!
