PSA: Did The Google Fi Phone Deal? Price Match With Citi

In late November, Google Fi offered an incredible deal where you could get a full gift card rebate on a phone purchase up to a maximum of $999. A lot of readers took advantage of that deal and prices on a lot of those phones have dropped significantly, if you purchased using a Citi card then you can use the price protection feature to get refunded the difference making the deal even better than it was before.

I did the installment plan for 24 months. Would Citi Price Rewind do anything in this case? I really should have just paid in full.

Sorry, they won’t. You could ask Google for a credit? But that might validate the terms of the offer.

If I used a citi card while meeting MSR for this, would I have had to have spent $150 over the MSR to risk no claw back of SUB?

You can request the rewind amount as a check and not a statement credit so it shouldn’t affect anything.

Chase has “accepted” the claim and is investigating. They have told me a couple of times they need “5 more days” to “investigate”. Next update is due on 2/15/2019.

CFPB probable

Hey, I just bought a Pixel 3 like four days ago on my Citi card. I bought it on credit through Google so I didn’t really pay anything on it yet (only paid taxes). My question is, can I take advantage of this deal?
1. I tried on the Citi Price Protection site but not sure if I can claim I paid $750 for the phone since it was on credit. And I paid $0 initially.
2. Am I requesting a $999 gift card rebate or the $200 Fi service credit? Wasn’t sure what I’m claiming…
Any help on this is highly appreciated.

You won’t be able to claim it because the total cost of the device wont show up on one statement.

Aww man, I always forget about the citi price rewind benefit. Was meeting a min spend signup bonus, but no excuse for not using a citi card here for this very reason! Would have been an easy $150 back.

Used amex. Do they have price protection?

Yes they do. I’ve never used it, but it’s listed as a benefit of my gold Delta. Try submitting it!

Generally no, although there may be a few Amex cards that have it. Most World MasterCards have it though. In fact, since we are about 60 days out from Black Friday, it’s not a bad idea to see if any purchases from then are worth price protecting. I submitted a claim this morning for an iRobot vacuum. Should get $35 back on that. I had camelcamelcamel set to email me price drops and it lit off yesterday.

I set up a price rewind after getting this deal. Had some trouble using Citi’s product search tool to match the right product. It came up with several matches, which don’t seem to be correctly tracking publicized pricing. I plan on just submitting my own screenshot later, but it would have been nice for this tool to take care of it automatically.

Do you have a link to the site with a cheaper price? Not having much luck with my search. Thanks

The current price on the Google Store is less than what I charged on my Citi card, so that’s what I’m using.

I had to upload an advertisement as Citi’s price finder isn’t seeing the $150 discount as it’s taken off the price during checkout.

You don’t need to. There’s an option to submit a Price Rewind for something not listed on Citi’s site…

Also works with Capital One Quicksilver Mastercards due to the “MasterCard Platinum” Price Protection benefit.
https://www.capitalone.com/assets/credit-cards/pdf/benefits-guide-platinum-mc.pdf

Did this last year (with the 100 USD Fi Credit Offer followed by a regular 50 USD price drop).
This year I just went with the 100 USD Amex Credit.
