I ordered 12 memberships on 2/17. All the orders went through. The next day all but three of the orders had disappeared from my account.

Why did you post this just 1 day before the increase? Too late for me.

So I recall form an earlier post on this topic that they’re charging tax on Gift of Prime, but do they charge tax on monthly/annual memberships now too? It’s been a while since I’ve had Prime.

Crazy to me that so many people pay for prime. They offer free shipping on orders over $25 without prime, and usually offer discount or free prime trials multiple times per year. Do not get me wrong, people can pay for the service if they want, but the amount of people that I have seen on social media complaining about Amazon’s record profits and increasing the price have no clue how economics works…a simple concept called “demand”. And Amazon has done the math, they make more money when people are signed up for prime than when they are not…Prime is not a charity service. Amazon knows people like complaining on social media but do not like putting their money where their mouth is – they know that sheep will keep handing over their money to the company whose business model they complain about. Even some people here upset with Amazon but then wanting to hand them hundreds of dollars to buy years of prime service in advance. Reminds me of people who sit around at Starbucks drinking their $10 latte while playing on their $1,200 iphone while complaining about capitalism.

I’m a student and paying half price for prime. I enjoy receiving my stuff less than 24 hours after ordering them, even a $5 shampoo which sometimes I forget to buy, then I need to go to my closest store and kill one hour of my time. I have unlimited music, showtime, and kindle unlimited for just 0.99 a month. I enjoy watching prime video and playing a little prime gaming with friends on weekends and listening to my audiobooks while driving home, it’s one of my best decompression techniques. Last year I saved over $320 on textbooks alone (prime-exclusive savings) just because I had prime. I switched my prescription to prime since it’s 20% cheaper than my former drugstore! The list goes on, I would gladly pay the full price for prime after college, because to me it’s about how much I could receive the joy and facilitate my life for less than 50 cents a day. I always but Amazon gift cards for 10% off at my local grocery store (Dave’s), so everything is always 10% off for me. The reason Amazon is successful is not greed or capitalism, it’s about services that all other companies sucked at for a long time.

You had me right up until the end.

Of course this is capitalism. It’s capitalism at its finest, and that’s a great thing. Amazon knows there are enough people who will pay the increased price to more than make up for the few who will drop off because they believe it’s too expensive. In that situation, Amazon should absolutely should increase the price, as they’ve done.

On the flip side, those of us who purchase Prime are practicing capitalism in that we are willing to pay for Prime because, on the balance, the savings in time and/or money (your story of being able to avoid going to the store is a perfect example) will more than offset the cost we’re incurring in the membership. And conversely, those who don’t subscribe to prime figure that the benefit doesn’t outweigh the cost (and for many that may indeed be true), and that’s a capitalist calculation, too. [Those that cancel because they’re butt-hurt that Amazon is raising the price, without doing the math to determine the cost/benefit are just stupid (aka Socialist). That’s called cutting off your nose to spite your face.]

And finally, those of us who are buying GoP in advance are also practicing capitalism, in that we are willing to use the capital ($ in the bank) we have now, to buy something that we know will otherwise cost us a higher price in the future.

Capitalism rocks!

I agree with qmc lol. But tbh, you never had me lol. If you think Amazon is capitalism, or if you think capitalism and markets are the same thing, then you don’t know anything about Amazon, capitalism, or markets. The idea that making financial decisions based on rationality (ie homo economicus) is “capitalism” is like simply wrong. You have basically argued that essentially in your mind, everything supposedly “rational”, especially everything in the economy you think is good (by your definition, it is rational that people sign up for predatory lending, it is because they are making the rational economic decision based on the issues they are facing) – is capitalism. WW2 rationing, the centrally planned republic of walmart, and everything else in society would like to have a word with you.

TLDR: Capitalism =/= homo economicus =/= markets =/= Amazon =/= supply and demand. This cannot be stressed enough. You are equating capitalism with a million things that it definitionally isn’t. A literal barter economy and a feudal economy would have supply and demand and markets and “rational” thinking. The word capitalism has literally lost all meaning.

It seems you might not understand the issues with the “you aren’t allowed to criticize capitalism because iPhone” argument. You also understand that many people who complain about Amazon are criticizing many different practices, some which are anticompetitive, some that hurt small biz, and yeah, putting your money where you mouth is is an option. But that same argument can be applied to anything. By this logic, you aren’t allowed to criticize your state gov cuz you can just up an move elsewhere. Are people who criticize walmart and amazon for giving people bad wages, for example, not to be taken seriously if they buy from those places? This is nonsensical logic. Saying “stop treating your employees like shit” and still buying from that place (especially considering they have tons of products you can’t find easily elsewhere, and it is very easy for Amazon to do better, per se) are not incompatible. Unless in your mind, any statement must be a boycott. Which seems dumb.

I think most people share Prime accounts, at least everyone that I know do. I share my Prime account with 4 different households, and it’s less than $50 per house per year. Together we make purchases at least 2x a week and some of these orders are under $25.

Prime/Amazon Video is up and coming, and I use it a lot in my circle of streaming services. Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is one of my favorite shows.

Anyone else getting an OOS message when trying to check out? Seems odd that they’d be OOS on a “membership.”

So what’s the deal with sales tax? Do they tie the amount of sales tax to the GoP so you get it back if you convert it back to an Amazon credit?
