Quick Tip: Get Q4 Discover 5% Back with Amazon Pay

Discover is offering 5% back on Amazon and Target this quarter on up to $1,500. An r/churning member notes that Amazon Pay transactions work to trigger the 5% cash back rate.

You can see a list of merchants who accept Amazon Pay here. No major retailers there, but some names you’ll recognize. Anyway, keep it in the back of your mind in case you ever see the Amazon Pay option at checkout somewhere this quarter. Let us know if you have a more creative way to make use of this.

I remember back in the day lots of us cashed out our Discover 5% categories by sending money to someone else free with Amazon Payments. The Send Money feature doesn’t exist anymore, but you can still use Amazon Pay at some merchants and max out that way.

While Target and Amazon are popular merchants where I’ll be doing lots of shopping regardless, it’s not necessarily easy to get value from the category for those who have the Target REDcard and the Amazon Prime card which get 5% back anyway. We wrote a tip about using it to buy Target gift cards when they run their annual sale. This Amazon Payments method is an additional option.

I just made a purchase today. I imagine it will take time to get a result, but if it’s helpful, the merchant name that immediately comes through on Discover is “amzn.com/pmts”

The current 5% cashback terms don’t seem to mention Amazon Pay either way.

Thanks for the tip! Doing a major home renovation and noticed Build.com had the option. Assuming this keeps working it will be the quickest run to $1500 I’ve ever made with non-GC purchases!

Discover could potentially be worthwhile for some that redeem for merchant giftcards on Discover — this would boost the value of the cashback from 5% to 5.5% or greater (depending on which gift cards you redeem it for).

One example that I used recently is Sunglass Hut. If you redeem $20 Discover cashback, you can get a $30 Sunglass Hut gift card (The $20 –> $30 is the best value for Sunglass Hut), which effectively makes your return Amazon/Target purchases worth 7.5%.

I haven’t crunched the numbers or read the restrictions, but you can also redeem for Alamo, Enterprise , Royal Caribbean, and some others — effectively doubling the cashback (so instead of 5%, the return could be 10%). The caveat for the travel related ones are that you may need to book through their cruise desk, or with certain rate codes that may be a bit inflated.

My Target in Texas has 400+6 VGCs in stock. They only had 200s when I checked in September. Good deal since one of my discover cards is double cash back right now.

For girls who like to purchase makeup or skincare products, this site called b-glowing is also accepting amazon pay.

Late to the party here but wanted to add to what Lucy Zhu mentioned about b-glowing.com. (Thank you for mentioning, Ms. Zhu! 🙂

SokoGlam.com also offers Amazon Pay. They’re an American online retailer of curated Korean skin care & beauty brands, owned by a Korean-American wife and husband team. They have a blog/vlog that’s constantly updated and they have a plethora of info on ingredients. I really like their site.

And I’m looking at mattresses today and Purple.com offers Amazon Pay…with a queen-size mattress costing over $1,000, I’m really hoping the Amazon Pay used with Discover will give me the 5% cashback!
