[Rumor] American Express Working On Airport Restaurant Program

At the start of this month American Express cardholders with Priority Pass access lost the ability to use Priority Pass ‘restaurant’ options. This was a significant devaluation, especially for people with a home airport where the restaurant option was the only lounge available. Reddit user eagleslanding called American Express asking for a retention offer on the Platinum card due to this devaluation and they were offered either a $500 statement credit or 50,000 Membership Rewards points (no minimum spend requirement). The customer service representative also stated that ‘American Express is aware of the issue and is working on a restaurant program of their own to replace it.

I assume American Express’ acquisition of LoungeBuddy & Resy has something to do with this plan. American Express is in a somewhat unique situation where they have the Centurion Lounges and also the Escape lounges that are available to eligible American Express cardholders but not Priority Pass users. My guess is that eventually American Express will ditch Priority Pass entirely and offer their own lounge program. In the short term it’ll be interesting to see what happens on the restaurant front.

Also this just goes to show you should always be calling for retention, $500/50,000 MR points isn’t bad for a few minutes of work. When benefits are devalued this is always a good time to call as card issuers are often trying to keep retention rates as high as possible.

I just called. They gave me an offer of $300 after completing $4000 of spend in the next three months and keeping my card open for at least a year

Same.

Hurts to know where I stand with them. Hurts to know that they are right about me. Hurts to have to spend $4,000 on this card.

The way it is worded in the “story” above builds an unsupported causal link between the loss of this benefit and the retention offer made to eagleslanding. Disingenuous.

That would only work if your fees are due right? Or should I still call and see if they offer anything when I got the card just 1 month before they took out the benefit?

I have never received a retention offer on a business card from Amex. I guess they never offer business retention offers?

That’s not true; it’s just that they have higher thresholds for offering retention offers on business charge cards, and the offers tend to be poorer. My previous Biz Plat retention offer was 15k MR for $10k in 3 months.

Credit cards (especially cobrands) are a different story, though. For example, there’s plenty of DPs of decent retention offers on the SPG (now Marriott) biz cards.

Think that it might be need more so with SPG cards esp with higher AF than Chase and now the peak pricing and now longer 5th night free, now Amex SPG card ROI bar is much higher and card worth far less

Must be a recent development on the SPG business cards. Last year when I tried with over $15k a month of spending on SPG business alone in the previous year I got a big fat zero as were others (this was around May). I did manage to get an ok retention offer on the personal card. I kept both but really only for the free night certs. I didn’t even get the bonus spend offers that others did earlier this year despite holding both cards for several year though I didn’t really care about that because it wasn’t going to make me put spend on the SPG/Marriott cards anyway. At this point they are sock drawered.

Honestly I think the rep just threw that out their because they knew Amex had just acquired a restaurant thing and the rep was trying to keep the customer. Doubt it’s going to materialize into anything remotely of value to us. Might let Amex cut back on their Amex concierge expenses if they can shuffle all reservations onto a DIY platform though. (And lowering their costs is all we’ve seen Amex do lately…)

I don’t think it be that hard for Amex to partner with Airport restaurants ( even if was four visits of $28 or $35).

I do think Amex PT made a mis-step in killing PP restaurants, the month after killing airline credit – while GC were never intended – neither should the onerous use policy either existed on a “premium” card with a jacked up AF. While other cards have similar restrictions they are not tied to a single airline and they also have lower AF, as well as 2x-3x multiplers on other spend.

Pt AF fee is due to hit later this month may ask about retention fee.

Will, this may be jumping the gun. I think the Rep was referring to Resy. I hope I am wrong though.

The most common retention offer for personal plat is get 300/30K MR after 4K spend. Wish I could get that no spend 50K MR offer lol

Just want to point out that the poster points out he spends 10K per MONTH on the card and about that amount on other Amex cards. Someone spending about $250,000 a year on their cards is bound to be valuable to keep.

Just called no offers at all. Almost like they didn’t care. What I got was well we are opening a Centurion lounge in Denver but wouldn’t give date. And you can access Delta lounge (with Delta ticket). Other than that they could not find anything on this.

Called today for Amex personal platinum retention – $500 credit without any spend.
Minimal spend after MSR. Took the offer

Amex can’t ditch Priority Pass entirely. They still need international coverages.

10months since I got the amex gold card. If I call in now, which is before my annual fee is posted, would there be retention offers?

Called Amex business platinum and nothing . . .

I surmised with friends that Amex could leverage the Loungebuddy and Resy acquisitions to build out restaurant access in airports.

I called two weeks ago hoping for at least a 20k point retention offer for my biz plat. I was offered 10k MR/$3k spend/90 days. When I asked if there was another offer with more points for more spend the rep went through my past year on all cards with amazing concise detail. At that point I felt I either accept the offer, praise Amex and profusely thank the rep or risk receiving a RAT lashing. I opted for the former.

Just called Amex CSR, politely told them I was not thrilled about the removal of the Priority Pass restaurant benefit, and was eventually transferred to the Retention Department. Was then offered 30,000 MR points or $300 statement credit after spending $4,000 on the Platinum card in 3 months to keep the account open.

I happily accepted the offer.

Called to see what retention offer, Amex CSR laughed at me. Said to call back when I am at 11 months.
He did mention something is brewing to replace ‘Priority Pass’ restaurants option
