[Confirmed] Discover IT Adds 5% Options; Paypal in Q3, Walmart & Target in Q4

Update 5/1/19: This has now been confirmed, the changes are now showing up on the Discover it cashback calendar. Target is for both in-store and online whereas Walmart is for online only (includes store pickup).

Since the end of 2018, we’ve known the Discover IT 5% categories for the entire year:

  • Q1 (January–March): Grocery Stores

  • Q2 (April–June): Gas Stations, Uber & Lyft

  •  Q3 (July–September): Restaurants

  • Q4 (October–December): Amazon.com

These are showing clearly on the Discover website.

Now, frequent_flaya on r/churning reports from “a reliable source” that they’ll be adding the following categories for Q3 and Q4:

  • Q3 – Paypal
  • Q4 – Walmart and Target

My assumption is that they’ll just be adding these as an additional option, meaning we’ll have the $1,500 limit in the combined categories of Paypal & Restaurants for Q3, and Amazon, Walmart, & Target for Q4. Regardless, if this pans out it’s certainly helpful for maxing out those upcoming categories.

Official announcement should come in later this week, according to the report.

Those catagories would be useful… fingers crossed. I’ve got 2 IT cards because they used to be my favorites…until Discover made so many negative changes. We’ll see… John 3:16

Title says “Discover It.” Clicking on the source, I think it is not just the Discover It, but it would include other cards that are part of the Discover 5% program (e.g. Discover More)

William Charles

Is there any point in holding the more still?

Celia

My parents kept the More (after convincing my mother to open an IT card) to take advantage of the free SS monitoring. Keep one under each name. But other than that, it’s a horrible card, .25/.5/1 tiers, in my opinion.

First calendar quarter, I maxed both Discovers in vGCs >MO. Same logic as holding two Freedoms. The rest of this year, I may sock drawer at least one of them.

YMMV, but I got six months 0% APR on the more card. I agree the More card Cashback rewards are crap outside the 5% category.

I have one of each, a Discover It and a Discover More, and have had them for years. Both participate in the 5% cashback program, which is the only thing I ever do with Discover. Should I be converting my More to the IT for some reason?

Matt
Matt

Less than 1% cashback on non-bonus purchases on the more.

If you’re only doing 5%, it won’t matter, but the big difference is 1% for everything else, which was a big improvement back in 2012ish (or whenever the It was released). Outside of that, they’re quite similar. Is the More still an embossed card?

Unless you’re keeping it if it’s one of your oldest CC, Discover Miles card earns 1.5% Miles where first 12 months of purchases are doubled to 3% and the doubled CB is redeemable on the 13th statement. Discover only allows 2 CCs per SSN. Check the DMiles referral page if you want an extra $50 statement credit for your first purchase.

Although it’s advertised as Miles card, you can redeem it for cashback at 1:1 rate. IME, Discover is very generous with credit limits and very useful for MS activities.

William Charles, speaking of Discover More, my More card was just converted to Discover IT. I don’t think they sent me any communications about it beforehand (but I might’ve overlooked them), as I purposefully didn’t use it in hopes of getting one of the $75 w/ $1000 spend bonuses that I used to years ago. The mailer it came with got shredded, so I’m trying to find out if they gave me a year of cashback match (they did give me 0% APR for one year).

OH GIGO !! It took me almost a year to go through all the Walmart GCs I bought 4th quarter of 2017 due to the bonus spend of that era.

I would rather have 5% Walmart and target online back

PayPal is very broad and covers many retailers, so sounds like Q3 will be a good quarter.

GoPack

Yeah you could easily max that out, really nice but I’d still never buy a major purchase with Discover anymore since they ditched their warranty and price protection benefits.

The calendar still lists only restaurants for Q3, but I just activated Q3 and it lists Restaurants and PayPal.

Yep, I’m seeing it as well, but only on desktop (the Android app is still only showing Restaurants).

Confirmed. The changes are showing up for me on the CashBack Calendar: https://www.discover.com/credit-cards/cashback-bonus/cashback-calendar.html

Earn 5% Cashback Bonus at Restaurants and PayPal from July 1–September 30, 2019, on up to $1,500 in purchases.3

Earn 5% Cashback Bonus at Amazon.com, Target and Walmart.com from October 1–December 31, 2019, on up to $1,500 in purchases.4

“PayPal qualifying purchases are those made through the PayPal wallet online, when you send money to Friends and Family via PayPal using your Discover Card, and point-of-sale transactions using PayPal Here”

Worst case: sit on the couch and paypal your friend/sibling/spouse and get them to pay you back a different way? 5%-2.9% = $31.50

I’ve used PayPal for Ebay for years now. But, how would you use PayPal for groceries, or other local purchases for instance? Smart phone App? PayPal Debit Card?

Kent

Using the Paypal debit card wouldn’t let you get this 5% back through Discover. I think the only way to buy groceries or other items locally is if the store allows buying online (and paying with Paypal), to pick-up in store. Both Target and Walmart accept Paypal on their websites.

At Target, you run into the problem that they don’t allow many grocery items to be ordered online for pick-up, showing “Check stores” instead of “Add to cart”. Not sure if this also applies to Walmart.

Thank You Kent

It may take a transactions to confirm, but I can shop several places using PayPal via Samsung Pay or Google Pay (Android Pay. I can set Discover Card as a default payment.

FYI Discover Q2 Gas Stations
I have been using a PenFed Visa for gas…cashback = 4.25% (All year long) BUT, it only pays the bonus points if you use it at the pump for just gas. The Discover Q2 is not as strict, it will pay the 5% on purchases made inside too. Granted, nobody finds very many bargains in Gas Station/Convenience stores…but they do have lose leader items to draw traffic…and so sometimes Miller Lite is cheaper there.☺

No but you can usually score Amazon gift cards etc in gas stations!

Any VGC/MCGC possibility with these categories? Target only has $200 VGC for $6 fee now.

does not look like walmart stores included. It says walmart.com

if walmart grocery counts then this is super easy category… I buy my groceries there

Your move, Chase.

Mikey

Exactly. Discover has fallen into this trap before of getting a little early announcement buzz, only to later get one-upped by CHASE who then duplicates or even improves on that same category.

is it possible to buy $500 vgc using paypal??? nevermind…. they sell Randalls gift cards which can be used to buy VGC…

That stinks if its strictly walmart.com and not in store…

Hopefully for those of us that use Target enough we can take advantage of stacking the discounted gift card purchase that Target does once a year. 2 years ago was able to get 2 $300 gift cards for 270 each before the 5% trimming. Especially since any REDcard gift card trickery is now dead.

Nice! Finally some positive news out of Discover after a bunch of benefits got removed.

Anyone have any DP on the Business version of the Discover CB card? TIA

Eric S

Isn’t that a flat 1.5% back card? If so, it’s like Miles and Chrome that it won’t be eligible for 5% categories.

Mimi
Mimi

I was told last year by a Discover rep that we can only have 2 Discover cards, I wonder if that applies only to personal CCs? If the biz card is separate, I’d apply for this card since it doubles CB the first year like the personal miles card. Only disadvantage is no SUB or RAF offers.

Mikey
Mikey

Apologies for restating the obvious, but in reading through the description on the DISC app you earn the 5% cashback online at Amazon, WalMart and Target, and in store only at Target. But there’s a workaround where you can use the WalMart app to pre-shop using grocery and/or in store pickup and still qualify. In other words, don’t simply shop at WalMart and then use DISC as the point of purchase form of payment. Corrections are appreciated if I misunderstood the terms.

William Charles Chuck If you haven’t already, could you schedule a post on/around July 1 to discuss ways to maximize the Discover 5% for PayPal?
