[Confirmed] Discover IT Adds 5% Options; Paypal in Q3, Walmart & Target in Q4

Update 5/1/19: This has now been confirmed, the changes are now showing up on the Discover it cashback calendar. Target is for both in-store and online whereas Walmart is for online only (includes store pickup).

Since the end of 2018, we’ve known the Discover IT 5% categories for the entire year:

  • Q1 (January–March): Grocery Stores

  • Q2 (April–June): Gas Stations, Uber & Lyft

  •  Q3 (July–September): Restaurants

  • Q4 (October–December): Amazon.com

These are showing clearly on the Discover website.

Now, frequent_flaya on r/churning reports from “a reliable source” that they’ll be adding the following categories for Q3 and Q4:

  • Q3 – Paypal
  • Q4 – Walmart and Target

My assumption is that they’ll just be adding these as an additional option, meaning we’ll have the $1,500 limit in the combined categories of Paypal & Restaurants for Q3, and Amazon, Walmart, & Target for Q4. Regardless, if this pans out it’s certainly helpful for maxing out those upcoming categories.

Official announcement should come in later this week, according to the report.

Is there a way to link the Paypal debit to Discover? I have to pay my DMV fees and I get double cash back so 10% if using disc/pp. AZ DMV doesn’t offer PP as an option.

Paypal in 3q is great news. Just in time for income tax and estimated payment to be due. Payusatax.com takes Paypal! Slightly higher rate than pay1040.com but well worth it to get 5% back!

William Charles  Chuck If you haven’t already, could you schedule a post on/around July 1 to discuss ways to maximize the Discover 5% for PayPal?

Apologies for restating the obvious, but in reading through the description on the DISC app you earn the 5% cashback online at Amazon, WalMart and Target, and in store only at Target. But there’s a workaround where you can use the WalMart app to pre-shop using grocery and/or in store pickup and still qualify. In other words, don’t simply shop at WalMart and then use DISC as the point of purchase form of payment. Corrections are appreciated if I misunderstood the terms.

Isn’t that a flat 1.5% back card? If so, it’s like Miles and Chrome that it won’t be eligible for 5% categories.

I was told last year by a Discover rep that we can only have 2 Discover cards, I wonder if that applies only to personal CCs? If the biz card is separate, I’d apply for this card since it doubles CB the first year like the personal miles card. Only disadvantage is no SUB or RAF offers.

Hopefully for those of us that use Target enough we can take advantage of stacking the discounted gift card purchase that Target does once a year. 2 years ago was able to get 2 $300 gift cards for 270 each before the 5% trimming. Especially since any REDcard gift card trickery is now dead.

That stinks if its strictly walmart.com and not in store…
