[Rumor] T-Mobile To Launch ‘Global Plus’ Add On For $50 Per Month –

According to a document leaked to Tmo News T-Mobile will launch a new add one for customers on a T-Mobile ONE plan called ‘Global Plus’. For $50 a month users will receive:

  • Unlimited high-speed data while roaming in a Simple Global country
  • 5GB high-speed, international tethering in a Simple Global country
  • Unlimited Simple Global to Simple Global calling at $0.00 per minute
  • Unlimited messaging
  • Unlimited stateside international talk and text
  • All features of the ONE PLUS international add on.

Previously you could pay $5 daily to get high speed data and calling. It looks like the plan needs to be in place for a full billing cycle, but it isn’t clear if the add on can be added and removed at will. If you were already using the $5 daily add on more than 10 times a month then you’d be coming out ahead on the new plan.

This doesnt seem like a good deal at all. Why pay US inflated cell phone rates in foreign country? Forward your phone to VOIP number, use your providers messaging app to text. Pay for a local sim card for small percentage of our rates and you have the best of all worlds.

Giffgaff is the best if you have an unlocked phone.

If you’re going to many countries, couple days each, it gets annoying.

Whether that is cheaper is very dependent on the country. I frequently travel to Taiwan and Japan and they are quite different beasts in terms of cellular data costs. In Taiwan you can get a local sim for with anywhere from 3-7 day valididity with truly unlimited 4G (ive gone up to 50 gigs with no throttling) for $10-$30.

On the other hand, in Japan data is very strongly metered and I found myself buying the T-Mo $5 for 500MB pass about a dozen times on my last trip.

Users who frequently use large amounts of cellular data and travel to multiple countries or countries that don’t have favorable local sim options for travellers are gonna rejoice if this addon is a real thing.

Other than “price depending on the place”, in some countries it’s a hassle to get the local SIM card. You have to register and wait a few days before being able to obtain one. It’s not the case in most of the EU, but outside of the EU, it’s highly YMMV.

I have T-Mobile and am an occasional user of their free 2G data access abroad, but if someone was going overseas that often and wanted high speed, wouldn’t Google Fi be the better choice?

Google Fi is $20 base for unlimited calls and texts in the US (unlimited texts outside the US) and $10 per 1GB. That caps out at $60 per month (for data) for unlimited data but it could be throttled over 15GB. Tethering is free and comes from the data amount.

+1
You can also add a data only chip to a plan to use with a second unlocked phone or tablet. Google Fi is fantastic in the USA and abroad. No complaints from me after about 3 years as a customer.

FI is annoying to activate unless you actually have a Pixel (or one of the few FI supported phones). Meanwhile, T-Mo has what, 60m subs? I’m sure a good percentage of them are on One and thus eligible for this plan. Unfortunately, I’m not.

There are a few variables to consider here, like whether Fi is already your domestic carrier, but yeah, Fi can definitely be the cheaper choice if you don’t need unlimited data. Assuming T-Mobile is your normal domestic carrier, then as long as you’re able to stay under 3GB/mo, Fi will be cheaper for international use.

I totally missed that they got rid of the $20 pass that was good for 10 days.
