Our Verdict

The Safeway deals are usually at Albertson’s, Randall’s, and Tom Thumb too. Let us know if you’re seeing it at Acme & Shaw’s too.

The terms do exclude variable-load cards; in practice, some people have gotten them to work and others haven’t. It might be it depends on the store, the card-type, or some other factor.

The $500 cards are most useful for racking up grocery spend without any cost since the coupon more than negates the activation fee. Also keep in mind the Discover it and Chase Freedom cards both earn 5% this quarter.

On a side note, not sure if just my Safeway store or specific clerk, she indicated I couldn’t purchase $500 variable gift card with credit card. Max is $200. Not sure if its recent change in policy or just one off store/clerk.

Anyone else experienced this while buying 500 card.

It’s that clerk/store. I had the “manager” of one of the five stores in the same chain telling me I could only buy 200 with CC if I show ID. She even cackled to one of her minions “I told him only 200!” as I walked away. At another store, one employee let me buy however many I want as long as I show ID, while another told me “cash only” because otherwise “You would be making moneeeey!” with my debit or credit card (in a lecturing tone). A third store now lets me buy up to three 500 cards by showing ID. It’s always total crapshoot.

Hey DoC, just FYI that the image you posted above that says “When you buy a $150 gift card” has been changed (since Monday)

It now reads “When you spend $150 or more on Visa Gift Cards.”

So you can no longer ask for an override claiming that they “must be all out of the $150 gift cards”

Did they take down the $200 gc? I could have sworn they had $200 gc during the last $15 off $150 deal.

Has anyone tried the Everywhere Visa up to $200 variable ? That used to work in the past but again the $500 variable used to work too.

Tried loading a variable $200 style everywhere. No discount or fuel points.

Has anyone tried the Visa Everywhere variable up to $200 GC? That has worked in the past.

Another waste of time. Unless/until variables start working again, this “offer” isn’t worth the time to tweet about it, let alone cut and paste another blog post.

Really! Wasted 30min adding this to 40 accounts.

In the past, this worked for the black variable ones, but not this time.

No $200 in my store. Bought Variable Pink Flowers with $500 load: didn’t trigger the coupon, so paid the full $5.95 fee.

Wonder if the variable $200 Anywhere cards would trigger it

if worked, would have been good deal, isn’t it? but it’s not…in TX

if nothing else next mo, will buy 3 of $500 & quickly liquidate for about $60 profit, rather than too much time & effort to liquidate these small denom

Right. From a manufactured spending perspective, nobody would pay $151 for $150 in gift cards. Way too much hassle when, every day, you could buy $500s for $5.95. As I said earlier, I think we’ve been outgamed by the supermarket and gift card issuer!

well,if they think so & can’t sell, will have to make deeper discount like $15 off or more in future

iahphx , if u can have a way to liquidate vanilla visa, look for 1 with $4.95 fee at grocery stores

about whether being out gamed, well if they can’t sell may have to go back to a discount like $15 or more in future

They didn’t even have $100 MCGC in stock during the $15 off 2x$100 MCGC promo.

My store had $100, $50 and could use the recent promo on MC and visa for two $100 & two $50. However tried $150 deal and my premonition that Safeway didn’t carry 150 ones came true when I visited today. I went for $500 variable for another reason and it didn’t trigger the coupon redemption (like everyone indicated the deal excludes variable cards).
So guess it’s a ploy from visa or safeway to get customers buying GCs either mistakenly or people just trying to see if it works!

My store did not have the $150 fixed value too..so they said take 1 variable one and they will give me a discount of $11 to make up..
So I got one variable visa GC for $500 and they gave me $11 off, so net I had to pay $494.95..I was fine with it.
The store manager did say that they have never seen $150 fixed value GC’s and they also checked another nearby store.

I tried $100 + $50, and got the coupon discount. Am guessing should have gone for one $200 card and save few more dollars in fees

My Safeway in SF had racks of $500 MCGCs but not a single one could be activated by the register (random tidbit)
