Our Verdict

Can’t see these lasting until February 2022. I’d recommend using these ASAP (e.g right now) as $75 in free groceries seems like an insanely good deal that won’t last. Stop reading start ordering.

Obviously this was popular because both offers disappeared from my wallet when I went to look today. I had added them to my rewards account right when this article posted.

Just4u becoming Safeway4u (at least in my Safeway-laden region). Anyone see if they’re changing Albertsons and other marks changing from Just4u to something else? I wonder if this signals some kind of separation in the program between marks.

This Tuesday, I used $40 off $75 coupon, my order included 2 lb salmon, price was $7.99 per lb after special discount. When I picked up on Wednesday, 1 item is out of stock and salmon price was $12.99 lb. Store’s customer service refused to help me because online order and stores are under different dept.
Contacted CS via online chat, he rejected to refund money for salmon, just told me if salmon was charged at $7.99 lb, my order was below $75, not qualified to $40 off offer (1 item was out of stock). I told him item out of stock was not my fault, Safeway did not inform me in advance. Anyway, he rejected to refund money for incorrect salmon’s charge.
This is my first online shopping on Safeway and maybe the last one. The lesson I learned is do NOT order on Tuesday and pick up on Wednesday because Safeway weekly coupon is Wed to Tuesday.

I didn’t use either coupon because I never expected them to be honored. It was obviously a mistake because no grocery could afford to give all its customers a free $75. I did receive the $10 apology coupon which I appreciate. And I’m truly sorry for those who placed orders and were charged the full amount. But I wonder how many of you would keep the money if a cashier handed you too much change after a purchase. And then broadcast it on social media to exploit the mistake. Do unto others and have some decency, folks, This can’t be the kind of world we want to create.

Same here. Saw the coupons and thought that they were either a mistake or had some missing condition. Before going and filling a cart at the store decided to wait for some feedback and saw people here saying that it was not working at the store and would require manager override. I’m all for deals, but this was clearly a mistake, and I am not looking to hurt businesses due to a mistake, especially local grocery stores. The company has even gone above and beyond and issued $5-10 coupons. I feel like this world would be a better place if every high school student had to take a course to try and operate a business for a semester or a year, then maybe more people would understand that “free stuff” is not really free. Them honoring a $75 of “free stuff” due to a mistake, could mean hundreds of thousands or millions of dollars of potential losses for them…not to mention the sheer number of people here alone talking about having multiple accounts.

Lol. Albertsons Companies is not a local, mom and pop grocery chain. A simple search of Albertsons Companies would bring to light the fact that this company is owned by Cerberus Capital Management (they manage about $45 Billion in assets). Albertsons Companies booked revenue exceeded $62 Billion and they walked away with $466 Million in net income. In 2020. Count all the years you’ve been a customer and save the pontificating about high school curriculum for yourself and the mirror.

I said “local grocery stores”. Local branches of national stores are still considered local stores. They employee people in your area, and if unprofitable can be shut down. Also, the figures that you cited are willfully ignorant. You do realize that this company was at risk of bankruptcy not long ago, and also the revenue to profit figures that you selectively cited I do not think demonstrate the point that you meant…they operate on very thin profit margins. I am sorry you took offense to my response, but your response just solidifies my point.

Dude, $466 million profits on $62 billion+ revenue is less the 0.75% profit margin. I am not sure if you have ever run a business, but that is terrible. Your response is a good example of why a “simple search” cannot replace experience and education. And just so you are aware just because there is a national corporate entity does not mean that all branches share the profits. If profits dip then neighborhood stores that are less profitable might be shut down and hurt those communities. But maybe you can start your own business and give away $75 worth of free merchandise to every customer, as soon as you do please report back here so we can all take advantage of the deal and look at your business model.

Hey Dude. I worked for a major airline holding company as a pricing analyst. The industry wide margin is nearly 1%, so I am perfectly aware of the economics and tight margins that these businesses operate under. $466 million is no small amount of money, so let’s stop pretending as if anyone at Albertson’s Companies is losing sleep over this.

Gone are the days when a company messes up they still honor their error. Long time ago Kroger had a promise that if the price rang up wrong you got the item for free. That’s loooong gone.

So if it was your business you would honor the coupon and give $75 worth of free merchandise to everybody who walked into the store and showed a picture of the coupons? Even with the text of the coupon clearly saying that it has the right to be cancelled at any point including for reasons such as typographical and other errors? If you get upset as an individual not getting $75 worth of “free stuff” due to an error, imagine the impact it would have to a business trying to operate local grocery stores having to honor such a loss to tens/hundreds of thousands or more people. This company even went above and beyond and has now issued apology and is giving $5-10 coupons. I really do not get how much self-entitlement one has to have to not see this as a satisfactory outcome. I personally am most surprised that some local managers were honoring the coupon at check out, and even some people getting it honored online.

Received an email from Safeway “We had to cancel some offers before you could use them. Please add this new special offer to your account for your next shopping order at Safeway.”

New coupon is “$5 off your purchase of $5 or more”

No SW near me, but I think I recall that WM grocery offer… I was too slow trying to fill my cart with stuff I needed and it disappeared. Should have just ransacked the shelves with nice to have items.
