  1. Like before I bet you this works on all the Visa cards and not justified backs

  2. Peter says:

Not seeing this in my Acme MyMixx yet. I did have an AMEX coupon appear today though:

    Save $10 Instantly
Buy $100 get $10 off AMEX Gift cards. Limit 1

    Expires 09/23/17

  3. Ed says:

I have a friendly cashier/friend who doesn’t mind canceling the purchase if I request. As soon as the offer appears on my Safeway card I will try buying the regular variable load VISA for $150 plus fee -$10 and will report back. Will also let you know if it generates bonus fuel points..

  4. captainsave says:

Cant find this in my just for u coupons. In fact the whole gift cards category is gone. Anybody else?

  5. ppd says:

I’ve never seen Five Back VGC carried in ACME Markets.

    • Peter says:

I’ve seen them at mine (Philly region).

      • ppd says:

Any specific store(s)? Most don’t even allow CC payment.

        • Peter says:

I’d rather not post specific store locations publicly but every Acme I’ve been to in Philadelphia suburbs has had 5backs (at GCM rack and/or at checkout register racks).

I’ve never had any Acme deny credit card as payment method. I had one cashier deny paying for visa gc with Amex gc but by the time they started complaining I couldn’t do it the POS was at a point it couldn’t be cancelled so they let the transaction through.

    • Aaron says:

They have the variable load $20-$200 versions at mine (Vons).

  6. Roger says:

I dont see the offer, added to my Safeway JustForYou offers this morning,. does anybody else see it?

  7. Aaron says:

Nothing for me. No gift card category at all. As of 7am PST.

  8. Wyle says:

Nothing showing for Safeways in Tucson; either in-store or J4U. Would have expected it on Sunday if sale started 9/10. Must be a regional thing.

  9. nothing for me either in my Safeway acct….all 10 hehe….Must be regional this time.

  10. T says:

Nothing on the Safeway justforU for Colorado

  11. dan says:

must be regional / ymmv; not showing in TX

    • CM says:

Randalls is a Texas-only brand, and regional within Texas at that, too.

These VGC on J4U promotions have always been national. It looks like noone’s getting this.

  12. churneraddict says:

Not seeing in my justforu yet…like others said cant see the gift card category..(Northern VA, 10:56 AM)

  13. Jack says:

Not showing anything. I don’t even think this is a regional thing. Not a single person confirmed getting it.

  14. P says:

Doesn’t seem to be available in Hawaii. Still not showing up in my account.

  15. TheMonkeyTech says:

Nothing in Just4U Safeway accounts in bay area, california either.

Probably for the best, I can take a break from Safeway for a while.

  16. Edward says:

I took one of the pics, I couldn’t find it either…
I think there’s something wrong with their system, let’s check it back tomorrow

  17. Chuck N says:

Signage is up at my Safeway, SF bay area.

  18. John says:

No gift card category at all. They took it away for me ? anyone seeing this?

  19. Jack says:

Maybe this is one of the few times we need to pick up a phone and call Safeway promotion or marketing department to fix this glitch..

  20. Anony Mouse says:

Isn’t showing in my Safeway app (SF, CA) and it’s Monday afternoon. Looks like it’s certain regions/stores only.

  21. Tad says:

Has anyone tried re-using the promo at different stores Safeway/Albertsons/etc? I assume this doesn’t work but I figured I’d ask.

    • Anony Mouse says:

It works just fine if you have multiple Safeway accounts with multiple phone numbers, and all have the deal added to their account.

    • cm says:

They have a number of reward systems after all the mergers; I know of at least 3 separate ones. You can use J4U at any of the 6 different brands that are part of it (Safeway, Vons, Randalls, Tom Thumb, Albertsons, Pavilions); however, certain grocery promotions are limited to a particular locale (e.g., Safeway in Colorado has different deals than other Safeway stores elsewhere), which is determined based on the store that you manually select for a given moment (you can change these as often as you want for a given account, it’s mostly just for grocery discounts, though, as the VGC deals are usually nationwide). Note that although you can add any discount for any region, it seems like it’ll only ring at the register if it’s actually available for the store you’re physically shopping at.

BTW, I’ve tried using my Safeway/Randalls account at United West Texas, and it’s a no go, as it’s a separate system. The funniest part, however, is that “Albertsons” is part of the J4U rewards, whereas “Albertsons Market” is, apparently, a United thing, so, you can’t necessarily distinguish these kinds of things too easily…

P.S. BTW, was very impressed by United West Texas stores in Lubbock and Amarillo — they even carry customers bags to the car, have free cups for iced water, very nice and roomy cafe areas, and even Android Pay as well. Nothing like the Safeway in Colorado.

  22. HikerT says:

I found the signage in store at an Albersons here in WA so it definitely should be showing up in J4U (but still isn’t). That said, it was taped to the back of the rack out of view so maybe they were told to pull it? I only saw it because a manager was pulling out the rack to check for stock. I called J4U (number on receipt) to inquire whether they were aware the offer advertised in store was not showing up in J4U. They were completely clueless. First they gave me the 5th degree for shopping at multiple Safeway / Albertsons, as if they don’t want people spending money at their stores. Then they claimed it wasn’t showing up because it was a targeted offer, despite the signage in store indicating otherwise. I swear they must not do drug testing for the J4U call center because these guys always sound half baked. That said it probably wouldn’t hurt if others called them to hopefully get a hold of one of the competent reps who might actually escalate the issue. Number is on the receipt.

    • J says:

      Please do not call.

    • Deirdre says:

I call CS today as well. They couldn’t find the offer in their system, and then reached out to technical support, who weren’t able to find it either.

      • HikerT says:

Good to hear Deidre. Hopefully it will get escalated to someone that can fix the issue.

J thanks for not calling. Best to leave it to those with above-average intelligence.

        • aby says:

@Hiker: to his credit, he has learned the ‘do not call’ mantra and is following it. if he’s not bright enough to do basic analysis, best that his default remain set to ‘do not call’.

me, i consulted tarot cards and a shaman before calling- perhaps more than once. none of the reps seemed to be aware of the glitch. did my best to get it up the chain. safeway IT giveth, safeway IT taketh away. hopefully it gets squared away; as i’ve got upwards of 5 family accounts to exploit to big stacks. woo hoo

        • Mser says:

Those with above average intelligence know not to call.

        • Elmer says:

Fortunately, it sounds like your definition of “average” intelligence is pretty low… and i’m glad for that… it means you will likely never figure out any of the good deals on your own! Your sense of entitlement while knowing breaking terms & conditions of the deal is really not flattering.

    • HikerT2 says:

Sounds like you need to get to the root of you problems. They’re giving you a hard time for violating the terms of their reward program and having multiple account. Perhaps the guy isn’t baked, perhaps you’re just wrongly entitled?

  23. Aaron says:

Since the sign is up at a few stores, could it possible that the coupon doesn’t need to be loaded? Maybe the discount gets taken off automatically, without loading the coupon?

    • 86 says:

The ads above say: “Download offer on mymixx” and “Download offer on just4u.”

I haven’t seen the gift card category after logging in for at least a week or two now.

  24. Claire says:

Not in MyMixx but the sign was up for the promo. I asked customer service about it and they gave me the $10 off manually.
Acme also has $10 off a $100 Amex gift card this week and that one is on MyMixx and the coupon can be clipped.

  25. NinjaX says:

thanks for the fake news doc. will never ever ever ever trust this blog ever ever ever again…

    • NinjaX says:

also, i tried logging into multiple J4U brands and i dont see the offer here in CA. maybe its regional, but its probably some glitch. reminds me of the Staples GC offer issue a few weeks back.

      • Doesn’t seem to be showing for anybody, so I doubt regional. Best bet is to ask for manual reduction.

        • R says:

best bet is to wait until Wednesday morning

        • Ed says:

Right! I’ve never had a problem getting a manager with an override key to manually credit the adjustment. They will do it to either honor signage by the gift card display (or in-ad) OR if you show them the offer in your rewards account on your cell phone. Allow them the time to scroll and review all of the details. Managers do not want you leaving the store unhappy about not honoring a valid promotion and then potentially calling corporate with bad feedback.

      • CM says:

FYI: regional offers appear to differ based on the selected store for your account (“My Store”), not on “logging into multiple J4U brands”. But I think all clip-on VGC J4U promotions have always been nationwide, this year at least.

        • NinjaX says:

yea. i actually tried different stores in CA. but not in other states. thats why i logged into different brands to check things out. for example, there is no Safeway in SCAL altho the Safeway app will just show Albertsons in SCAL, but I wanted to make sure its not based on store app.

  26. TheMonkeyTech says:

Not in any of my J4u accounts. Went in store, rang up without any instant discounts.

Maybe the physical sign went up early. Might show up in J4U in a few days or something.

  27. VL says:

Nothing in Just4U Safeway accounts in bay area, california either.

  28. iahphx says:

So this mystery remains unsolved? I’ve got some more minimum spends to do, so I’d love to see another Safeway Visa deal.

BTW, I was under the impression that gift card purchases didn’t earn fuel points. That seems to be wrong, because all my recent GC purchases have qualified. It varies by region, but typically a $500 GC purchase earns you 50 cent/gallon off a gas purchase, with $1.00 off being the maximum discount (in South Florida, though, it’s only 20 cents!). If you’re a traveler, it’s nice that the discount can be used nationwide, anywhere there’s a Safeway/Alberstons affiliated store (you can use the location finder to see them). The points are good until the end of the next month. Another reason for me to like buying GCs at Safeway — whenever they have a sale.

    • Nick says:

There is no hard and fast rule on whether cash equivalent gift cards (like VGC) will generate fuel points. It is not intuitive. Sometimes you will earn them on variable load purchases (a nice surprise), sometimes you won’t. Sometimes you will not earn them on fixed denominations (though signage indicates only variable loads are excluded), often you will. You definitely earn fuel points on non-cash gift cards like restaurants or department stores, and usually at 2X or 4X the $ amount (ex: $100 Macy’s gift card generates 200 fuel pts).

      • iahphx says:

Yeah, I assumed that non-cash gift cards earned gas points and MC/Visa/AMEX cards did not, but it seems like all my GC purchases have earned points. Honestly, I didn’t value those points highly because I live in Giant supermarket territory — where the gas program is even more lucrative. But I’ve discovered that, for travelling, the territory where I can use Giant points for gas is small, while the territory for Safeway points in nationwide. So, for me, it makes the Safeway program even better. Just don’t expect much in Florida (at least South Florida) where you only get 20 cents off per gallon. Talk about a sucky loyalty program!

  29. Travel Tyler says:

Not seeing this in my safeway account for the North Texas Stores…

  30. LnL says:

Finally showed up in my Safeway J4U account. Similar to others, gift cards category had been removed but looks like it’s back now.

  31. R says:

I see it now in J4U

  32. Edward says:

    yes, finally showed up!

  33. TheMonkeyTech says:

Showing up for California too. I wonder if this will work on non 5 back Visas?

  34. Daniel says:

Mine showed up today (9/13) in DC. I thought it would today; it’s when the new ad week begins.

  35. Curtis says:

    Nothing in TX still.

  36. Daniel says:

I tried with a variable load card and it didn’t take off the $10 coupon 🙁

  37. Valerie says:

Shaws MA – got the coupon under Floral

  38. Dee says:

Was hoping that this worked on regular VGC’s, but looks like it won’t. I have 4 minimum spends that I need to complete, any ideas for MS’ing with these 5 Back Visa’s?

    • Dee says:

I have seen old DP’s that these can be used at WM for MO’s. Does anyone have recent experience doing this?

      • Chris says:

They should be, as they’re regular gift cards that can be used anywhere as Visa debit cards. You just won’t get cash back unless it’s a merchant that participates in the Five Back program.

  39. captainsave says:

Do 5 back visa earn gas rewards and can they be drain with serve?

  40. Cole says:

coupon for 10 dollars off the 5back VGC are now in my just4u account.

yesterday, i was in a safeway and they had a wrong promo sign.. it had 8/13/17 – 8/19 expires 8/25… and it was for all visa/mastercards…

  41. T says:

showing on jfU for safeway in Colorado

  42. Cole says:

so… these 5 back cards, i know previously there was a MS approach to use them at a participating retailer to buy otehr VGC, then to use those GC to buy money order, etc..

i think all the good retailers have dropped:

what i want to know is… can i just buy a standard walmart MO with them to dispose of them? (i have had luck at my local walmart with other VGC)

    • dan says:

test it to see; only $200; if not, still make $, nothing to lose

    • Mimi says:

yes, you can do 4 for $799.30 with four swipes but as always, YMMV.

      • Cole says:

i didn’t realize you can split 4 ways at WM.. i know its always YMMV.. i just was curious if others had luck in the past.. being stuck with 800 vgc isn’t a big deal. i’ll just give them to the wife.. she will make them disapear!

        • Mimi says:

yes, with “most” WMs you can do four swipes either by loading your prepaids or buying MOs. when Lowes was still participating in 5B program, I bought some there and proceeded to WM beside it to drain my 5Bs in groups of 4.

          • Cole says:

i’ve split 2 ways in the past to buy a 999.30 MO..

i asked to split, because i was clueless.. i assume you need to tell them you want to split 4 ways? or?

  43. iahphx says:

Nice to see these live. I’m assuming the FiveBack’s at Safeway stores are variable and capped at $200?
As noted above, you can definitely get rid of these at Walmart, four at a time, to buy money order’s, but it’s obviously a bit of hassle and looks “sketchier” than using $500s. You’ll also need more Safeway accounts. A few months ago, I used to “convert” these discounted FiveBacks to $300 Visas on (at a small additional profit), but now Staples has also pulled out of the FiveBack program. The remaining merchants who participate in the FiveBack discount look lean: has anyone looked at Cabella’s or Cracker Barrel?

  44. Mimi says:

@Cole, I’ve always been able to split 4 ways for $2K MO with varying amounts like two 999.30 or one 1K 998.60 for the other and other combinations I can think of. I just say 500 on each swipe or for those CS who already know me, they ask 500 on your debit? I just say yes.

If I have $300 Staples VGC, I make sure to specify I’m swiping “only” 300 three times for an $899.30 MO. Same thing if I have BBY $200 VGCs, 200 per swipe four times for $799.30. It’s the same thing if I’m just loading my prepaids, limit of 4 swipes per transaction.

    Hope that clarifies.

    • Cole says:

ahh ok. 4 swipes per transaction. that helps. i don’t do this often, when i had used the 500 vgc for 999.30 MO, i had just done the couple of money orders i did at different days.

  45. NBG says:

What is the fee for these $150 VGC?. Can someone tell how much is MM here with this deal?. Do we get 5Back with Walmart MO?. Any gas points?.
I am spoiled by Giant Gas deals.

    • Cole says:

no 5back at walmart MO. gas points are YMMV, i have gotten poitns on VGC sometimes, and sometimes no.. i would plan on No.

there isn’t much money to be maid on the deal. the real purpose is to hit minimum spend on credit cards with a purchase that is net positive.

  46. Mser says:

$200s aren’t worth bothering with. Pita.

  47. smbayguy says:

I got it on my Just 4 U accounts today.

  48. Got these at Safeway in Northern VA.
Will get 4 of them and get an MO at WM to liquidate.
Using this to meet MSR on MERRILL+

  49. I just tried to get these and they didnt work with my BofA 3-2-1 card…..the terminal says APPROVED…i got the signature panel to come up, but the activation slips say not activated. The cashier said they seem to only work as debit or cash only….anyone else come across this? Im trying them at Safeway

  50. feelgood says:

The $10 off $150 Visa Five Back also appeared on my Jewel-Osco MyMixx this morning.

  51. Ryan Thompson says:

These cards cost $6.95. So the profit is $3 instead of $4 like on the variables. Not only that but you’re only able to load $200 at a time, instead of $500. The main problem is that this significantly slows you down as you need 2.5x more accounts to hit the same volume, and 2.5x more swipes to liquidate. I will still probably do a few when convenient, but won’t go out of my way to hit it as hard as I usually do.

    • iahphx says:

Right. Like AMEX has a promo now where if you add an additional account holder to your Hilton card and they spend either $500 or $1000, you get a bunch of extra Honors points (in addition to the normal 6x points). A no brainer to do it at Safeway when you only have to buy a card or two, and they’re basically paying you to buy the card. But now you need 5 cards (and a little extra spend) to hit $1000. It’s a lot of work, especially the hassle of liquidating $200 cards. I honestly wouldn’t bother if I didn’t need some spending to meet a sign-up-bonus, and even that’s a questionable use of time.

  52. Jack says:

My problem with this is… if I hit this hard $100k, it would be so profitable for Safeway they realize they can do the $200 instead of the $500 normal visa and we’ll never see the $500 again. I’ll pass…

  53. mny says:

jewel stores here in Chicago have this offer in mymixx now
kind of a pain to have to load it to an acct to save this amount.

few months back, jewel had $10 off $50’s which included mastercards.
even with the activation fee, using a 5% back amex card still saved me 14.5%.
and it seemed, no one else cared, I was the only one buying them all.

I just don’t get it sometimes, people complain about not having enough money and here was a way to save 9.0-14.5% depending on how you paid for the MC

  54. Ed says:

Sorry to disappoint, but my friend was not working today as cashier so I was not able to try buying a regular VGC. The $206.95 purchase triggered the $10 bonus immediately as well as 400 fuel points. No problem with split payment (needed just $100 of it to complete a minimum spend on a Marriott VISA which does not include groceries as a bonus category).

  55. Jack says:

made a trip to Safeway just for the heck of it. Bought 4 cards in 4 separate transactions. Drove to walmart to liquidate all 4. Whole process took an hour just for $800 gift card? and profit like $12? lol mininum wage in DC is $11 per hour… This is a waste of time. Would only make sense if $500 per.

    • These deals mostly are good for meeting MSR or if you have a 5% CB card and can scale this.

    • captainsave says:

Actually its $20 profit, don’t forget the $2 in pts ur getting. Now if you have bought 8 of them thats $40/hr! Just kidding, yea these are good for MSR with a little profit only.

    • iahphx says:

      Tax free, baby. 🙂

But it’s slightly more lucrative than that. Four cards net a total of $16 in cash, minus $1 for the money order. But you should also have a credit card with grocery stores as a bonus category. Let’s say you have a Hilton Surpass. You would have just earned about 4800 Honors points. That’s worth about $24. So your hour of work is worth $39. Not fantastic, but not bad, either. Obviously, the promos that let you buy $500 GCs at a discount are better.

  56. T says:

I’m only going to hit this one because the 3% back at grocery promo and $100 bonus for spending another $2.5k on my Marvel card stacks really well to get ~6% back on top of the $3 per transaction.

  57. JT says:

I got mine. coupon loaded fine in the store. I stacked it with the AmEx offer for $15 in points after $100 grocery spend. Both deals worked.

  58. yana says:

can’t decide which card to use, amex ED or SPG.

  59. Ken says:

Anyone successfully loaded $500 to a different VGC and got the discount?

  60. Max says:

There were plenty of 5 backs at my Acme. Used a plat card that had the 1500 MR for grocery offer and got the offer confirmation email. I’ve never used these, think I’ll go for real spend on partner gift cards I’d like to purchase anyway.

  61. fiveoh says:

Does anyone know if I pick safeway for the Drop app if it will work for Randalls? Also does it work with gift cards?
