Should You Apply For The Chase Sapphire Reserve Before The Annual Fee Increase? (Last Day To Apply)

Update: Today is the last day to apply before the annual fee increase.

On January 12th, 2020 the annual fee on the Chase Sapphire Reserve will increase from $450 to $550 for new cardholders (the annual fee increases to $550 for existing cardholders April, 2020). In addition some new benefits are being added for both new & existing cardholders on January 12th, 2020:

  • Complimentary Lyft pink membership
  • $60 DoorDash credit (this is is an annual credit that is valid from 1/12 – 12/31 each year in 2020 and 2021).

Because of this some readers are asking if they should sign up for the card now so they only have to pay the $450 annual fee this year or if they should wait until after January 12th, 2020 and pay the $550 annual fee. The only reason you’d wait is because of a possible increased sign up bonus. I’ve personally not heard of any increased sign up bonuses (and often I will with card changes like this), but it’s possible an increased referral offer or something will be offered. My gut feeling is that it makes more sense to sign up for the card now with the 50,000 point bonus and $450 annual feel. Others will prefer to ‘risk’ the $100 increased fee for a chance at an increased bonus. Keep in mind the following rules apply to this card:

Keep in mind also that Chase will usually not match to a higher sign up bonus if the annual fee is different (e.g when one offer has the annual fee and the other offer has the annual fee waived Chase will never match as the annual fees are different) so signing up with the lower annual fee and hoping for a bigger sign up bonus will not work.

Applied on the 10th and was told today that they aren’t reviewing the applications anymore. Guessing they stopped reviewing applications from before the price hike?

I applied on the 8th and have not heard anything from them. Application is still pending. @Jordan, what are they going to do with those pending applications? Did you call their reconsideration line?

Not yet, still waiting for a letter to confirm reason for denial so I can reach out to reconsideration.

In DC, I already much prefer Uber for various reasons: usually better rates and better user interface, etc. With this change, as a non-pink non-CSR user, I expect I would use Lyft even less, since the mass of CSR holders probably would further inflate the Lyft fare (with 15% off and 10x back) and make me as a non-pink user even lower priority. Good that in the future I might not have to check Lyft at all.

Chase website and actual application page are still showing $450 annual fee as of 7:10 am ET. I’d definitely screenshot and print out the terms with the time if you were going to take a chance on it.

Will the door dash credit extend to those of us whose AF’s are posting prior to the AF increase in April?

Debating CSP 60k no AF plus 10k Referral from Player 2. to the CSR. 20k points seems worth the lack of CSR benefits.

I am a CSR user for 3 years or so… Think I opened my account in March… My annual fee was charged on April 1 each year. Does it mean I am basically the first unlucky one subject to the $550 annual fee? 🙁

Appears so. Maybe you will get lucky though and there will be glitch where they start later.

“$450 annual feel”

Ah yes, I feel this annually. And I will feel the $550 even more when it hits.

I was having a problem justifying the $450 AF since Expedia took over the portal. $550 AF? And Lyft and Doordash are supposed to make up for it? LOLOLOL garbage.

If you’re under 5/24 — wouldn’t it be better at this point to just get the 60,000 point bonus on the Chase Sapphire Preferred with $95 fee, instead of 50,000 points with $450 fee? Or am I missing something?

You’re missing the fact that you can get both

It was possible when the CSR first came out, but “one card in the Sapphire family” rule was added a few months later.

Yes, the main one being PP benefits. If your home airport offers PP restaurants and assuming you max out that $28 credit, if you travel 5 times a year then you would’ve recouped that $150 net AF.
