Should You Sign Up For The Premier Rewards Gold Card Now?

In case you didn’t know on October 4th, 2018 changes are rumored to be coming to the Premier Rewards Gold card. Readers have been asking me if they should sign up for the card now, or if they should wait until the new card launched. Here are my thoughts:

Sign Up Bonus

Now the real question is will the incognito mode offer of 50,000 points still be available? And if so will it also come with the 20% back at U.S. restaurants up to $100 back? I honestly don’t know the answer to either of those questions. I think most people would prefer to settle for 25,000 guaranteed points but if you don’t want the card immediately then waiting for a better incognito mode offer might make sense.

Annual Fee

The annual fee is supposed to be staying the same at $195. I’ve heard one unreliable rumor that suggests it’s going to be increased to $250, I have two other sources that I trust more:

  • One states that the annual fee will definitely be staying at $195
  • The other is stating that they aren’t 100% sure and it’s possible American Express themselves haven’t finalized that decision

The final source is the one I trust the most and I’d be highly surprised if they are wrong. In any case the annual fee is currently being waived for the first year and I’d be highly surprised if that wasn’t the case on the new card. What the annual fee is will only affect new customers from year two onward and shouldn’t affect your decision now.

Benefits

As benefits are being added rather than removed even if you sign up now you should be eligible to utilize the new benefits when they launch, so signing up now or later should have no affect.

Our Verdict

It’s really a matter of what you think will happen to the sign up bonus in the short term. If you can’t get the 50,000 offer to show then I’d recommend waiting as the public offer is being improved. If you can get it to show you’ll need to ask yourself if you want to risk it for a potential extra $100 (20% back at restaurants). The other question to ask yourself is if you even want the card in the short term or if you’re happy enough focusing on other cards for now and will get around to the Gold card at some stage in the future. I’d say the best option for most people would be to lock in the 50,000 points, but again it’s up to you to make that decision for yourself based on the available facts/rumors.

I applied last night for the 50k. No bonus denial pop-up. 😀

Where did you get a 50K link?
I can’t find it anywhere…

Lantean

which method did you use? i an doing the incognito method and i do get 50k MR bonus but for $2k spend… it’s not huge difference but still, if i could get it for $1k spend would be better. thanks.

JT
JT

Baidu.com method. I got the $2k spend but just went with it as it took about 10 minutes for me to pull the offer.

OK, thank you I am not going crazy and the min spend was increased to $2k.

Same here.

I assume you all have NOT had this card (PRG) previously – right?

I cant seem to pull up the 50k offer.. you just do the incognito trick?

JT

I got it using baidu.com and microsoft edge.

No. This is my first app after the advent of the pop up denial. I’ve never gotten the pop up.

What about downgrading from amex platinum to this? I am thinking of doing that when my annual fee hits.

You’d lose out on the signup bonus if you’ve never had the card before.

Joe
Joe

That won’t give you a bonus.

Is this a good first card to apply for someone who has been auth user on 2 credit cards for 18 months and only had ssn and credit history for 18 months? 770 fico score per Chase scoring site. AA Citi Platinum was rejected by Citi 2 months ago.

Will Amex approve someone with such less history/accounts? Or should we try chase freedom/discover type cards?

Mark

Should be ok. I moved from the UK and AMEX was the first major issuer to give me a chance after ~1.5 years worth of history that started from nothing (I wasn’t an AU like in your situation). I got the Platinum, PRG, and Green Card on the same day.

This was back in June 2016 so things may have changed.

John
John

Did you have an Amex in UK? I belive Amex has some method to consider your credit history from a different country and approve based on that in the US?

Also you mentioned major issuer. Did you try discover or capital one but still got rejected but amex approved you after that?

V

I think Amex is a good bet but I think you should do an apporama (burst of applications at the same time) and you might get multiple cards. Looks like your credit score is very good.

Barclays, Wells Fargo and CapitalOne (Sony card) were in the first successful apporama for my Mom when she had bad credit. Before that, BoA, Citi, Discover, Chase, Amex all denied her a card.

Amex, Citi and Discover all gave a card to my wife (Chase had denied, Sapphire Preferred, wishful thinking) when she was only an Authorized user and didn’t have any card of her own. A few months before that BoA (some cash reward card) had denied her application.

I think Wells Fargo would also give you a card easily if you have a good score and a banking relationship (just having a bank account is important, it doesn’t need to have a lot of money).

John
John

This is for my wife. She doesnt work so no income. But we could put mine in annual income. Citi denied her couple of months ago for 60k AA Platinum. And I am worried about the 50k PRG offer dieing so want to make use of that. Since its a charge card I am really worried it might be denied since she does not have any CC on her own (just auth user on couple of mines). Discover might approve but dont want to apply until Dec first week so we can capitalize on double points for 5 quarters

Is apporama still a thing? I thought these banks can see inquiries real time so even if you submit applications at same time, the second can see the first and the third can see first and second? No?

V
V

I always thought they would see the inquiries but the benefit is that the new card isn’t reported for x days (I think). So even if there are inquiries, the 6th bank will see those inquiries and the score for the 6th pull will be lower (5 times each hit) but no bank knows how many cards have been issued or are being issued. I have often been able to get multiple cards in a burst with a few denials among the burst.

Wells Fargo requires requires citizenship

My spouse is a green card holder and has both a Wells Fargo personal checking and credit card. What makes you think WF requires US citizenship for something?

Kiwah
Kiwah

No bank requires citizenship.

Jim

Nois – Completely false. I just went with a friend from overseas to open a bank account at Wells on his recent visit. This was to receive funds from a US company that required a US account.

I already this card and got the signup bonus, but cancelled it a while ago. I later got the Green card (just for the signup bonus), which I still have. Hoping they might put out upgrade offers once the new Gold card is released!

J T
J T

Same, 50k incognito offers both player 1 & player 2, closed at AF. Both currently have Green open, 25k incognito offers, hoping for an upgrade offer with points to revamped PRG. I will also consider a product change when my Plat AF comes due.

Hey Doc, do you have a targeted link for this card that doesn’t have the “lifetime” language? thx!

AUSINSIGHT
AUSINSIGHT

Applied for myself and wife through 50k for $2k incognito the day this whole thing became a rumor. One thing I was concerned about was annual fee not being waived in first year moving forward. You say you’d be surprised but any reason why?

Gurrl
Gurrl

I have to get this card for Rose gold, never had AMEX MR before except for old costco and spg

Zack
Zack

Went incognito for 50k/$2. Definitely think this is the move to make, with them improving the card benefits that much something else is gonna have to give – whether its the sign on bonus or AF

Drivesabrowntruck
Drivesabrowntruck

To add to that, my wife and I did the incognito trick for 50k/2k. We don’t spend much at restaurants, so the new signup benefit wouldn’t do us much good, took the bird in the hand approach.

JN
JN

I just signed up for the 50k and everything went through. I’ll be getting my card in 3-5 business days. That said, is there any way to confirm that I’ll be getting the 50k if I meet the spending criteria of $2k? I have screenshots of the offer saved just in case but I want some assurance.

Also, do charge cards like this require a hard pull?

Thanks

Julien
Julien

Applied yesterday with the 50K offer (incognito window) and got approved instantly even though I already had the 50K bonus last year and cancelled the card a few months later. I’m thinking of downgrading my EDP now since I won’t have much use for it anymore.

Raj
Raj

You’re saying you weren’t hit by the once-in-a-lifetime language when you applied again? That’s surprising.

Julien
Julien

I was surprised too, I was expecting to see it but got approved instantly instead.

Bumpy
Bumpy

Does this mean you expect to get the bonus again due to the once in a lifetime message not coming up?

Jags
Jags

I went through baidu.com for the 50k offer and received the “you’ve already had this card” pop up. Cancelled PRG more than 3 years ago.

Dan
Dan

So are there two different amex popups? One for “already received the bonus” and another for ‘we will not give you this bonus cause we dont like/youve been getting too many of our cards/whatever other reason”

Jags
Jags

Correct 2 different pop ups.

TomT
TomT

Getting approved by Amex for a card you previously held does not mean you will get the bonus.

Bobby
Bobby

They’re making big changes. How do we know that they’re not discontinuing the PRG for signups and introducing the Gold card?

Avi
Avi

Because the new PRG benefits accidentally showed up after logging in for some current PRG holders.

Johnny Bucket
Johnny Bucket

Amex? How 1980’s can you get?
So many other options out there that blow this card away. And when half the merchants I visit frown on Amex because of the exchange I’d rather support them than Amex.

Blue

I think the 50K is an easy call, actually. Got it InPrivate on Edge after trying private Chrome and Firefox.

DeGea
DeGea

If it doesnt show up first time, do you refresh the page or do you have to go through the whole process again? I cant get it to show a 50k link in incognito mode. Thanks

I’m at 4/24 and was planning on opening the Hyatt card. Should I do this or that?

TW
TW

Hyatt isnt affected by 5/24 rule, so if there’s a card that is affected you should get it first. Otherwise, it doesn’t matter you could apply for both the Hyatt and this one.

Harry Nguyen
Harry Nguyen

Lets say I dont do the sign up bonus at 50k after $2k, would it be the same to get the 50k mr points, if I were to spend $2K on the 4x categories? Thanks!
