[Update] Additional Details Regarding Premier Rewards Gold Card Update: Sign Up Bonus, Annual Fee & More

Update: 10/04/18: Card is now live, more details here.

Update 10/03/18: Many people saw a popup today in their login with bit more info on the card design: “NEW: Sleek metal card design in Gold or Limited Edition Rose Gold, only until 1/9”. Apparently, the special card design is a special thing as part of the launch. (The links error out.) Hat tip to readers Alan an Neil.

Update: Reader Pattpong12 was trying to applying for the current card and it looks like they were shown the new Gold card page. Unfortunately it errored out when trying to apply, but seems to confirm the $195 annual fee being waived and also the 50,000 bonus still being possible. I’d still be applying now if you’re interested in the card but more on that here.

Update: Looks like the card designs have been leaked. Hat tip to puns4life. I don’t really care about card design, but I know some readers do and I actually like the rose gold version.

Original Post:

According to a source familiar with the matter the following changes will becoming to the Premier Rewards Gold Card:

  • Name will be changed to ‘American Express Gold Card’
  • Card will be available in two different colors, Gold & Rose Gold. Both will be metal
  • Sign up bonus will be 25,000 points after $2,000 in spend plus 20% back as a statement credit on purchases at U.S. Restaurants up to $100 back
  • Annual fee will remain the same
  • Other previously rumored benefits are accurate:
    • $120 dining credit. This is a $10 monthly credit that can be used at Grubhub, Seamless, The Cheesecake Factory, Ruth’s Chris Steak House, Shake  Shack.
    • Card will earn 4x points at U.S. Restaurants
    • Card will earn 4x points at U.S. supermarkets, up to $25,000 in spend per calendar year

It’s currently possible to get a sign up bonus of 50,000 points after $1,000 in spend (although this is YMMV). It’s unclear if it will be possible to get 50,000 points + 20% back at U.S. restaurants via the same methods when the updated card launches. My gut feeling is that it won’t, so it might make sense to apply for the card now but it’s also possible that it will be available. It is expected that these changes will take place on October 4th or thereabouts.

F.A.Q’s

Will this be treated as a new product (e.g can I get the bonus on this card if I’ve had it before)?

I very much doubt it, this is a product refresh/revamp with a new name and benefits rather than a new card. Existing cardholders will automatically receive the new benefits. This exact same situation happened with the Ascend card and it was not treated as a new card.

Will the other benefits be staying the same (e.g airline credits)?

Yes

If this will be the ‘Gold card’ does this mean the gold authorized users you add onto the American Express Platinum will earn 4x/4x as well?

Likely no, more information on why is found here.

Yep. Pink. More or less.

But more metallic. Player 2 might like it. Will ask.

Ikr metal gold and rose gold, are they following iphone trend?

Apple dropped the Rose Gold iPhone this time around.

What happens to airline credit?

CJ
CJ

It stays.

Will $100 airline credit still exist?

Andy

Since the name is changing, will this technically be a “new” card and not subject to the 1 per lifetime rule of the PRG?

so I would imagine that the Gold card shouldn’t be a new card, seeing how the Hilton Ascend card wasn’t a new product for the previous $75 Hilton Surpass cardholders.

Mmmmmm metal rose gold card sounds very nice! I was going to cancel the wife’s MB Platinum and now I might convert it to this one 😀

Raj

Any chance this might be treated as a new product, letting people who already had the card previously get the bonus again?

Elias
Elias

Are you posting only the added benefits or is that the list of all benefits? Because that would mean the gutting of airline fee credit and 3x travel

Avi
Avi

Maybe its better to get the card now while its still at 50k and then get grandfathered into the new rewards structure.

Avi
Avi

Well nvm, panicked and got approved for the 50k offer.

Deb

Wow, sounds good… if they keep the 100 airline credit and 4x a year Roadside Assistance then it’s a keeper! Guess the only question is what to do with my Sapphire Reserve…renewal up in January so have some time to decide.

Do the free gold cards you get with Platinum card also have the new benefits?

Only twits give a damn what color it is…

I’m glad someone finally said it.

Or that it’s metal, so pointless and gimmicky.

My main issue with metal cards is that they’re needlessly heavy and also destroy my wallet.

That and the novelty wears off very quickly.

So agreed….

Also destroy certain card readers that suck in the entire card like paying for parking at the airport.

At least CSReserve will replace the metal card with a plastic one if you call and ask. Amex won’t do that. I hate being in line behind someone who clanks down a metal card on the counter, as if it’s impressive.

KMan
KMan

I don’t really care what the card is made from. Some peeps do care. I really only care about the benefits.

The current PRG is the better looking card i have. I will be pissed if they send me a pink one automatically when it expires.

M

The current AmEx Gold also comes in 2 colors (darker and regular gold), randomly assigned. Few ppl even notice that.

PT
PT

The NFC version I requested is darker.

DGS
DGS

I’ve noticed that as well! When my card information was stolen, I was sent a new PRG that was about a couple of shades darker than the one I had previously. I’ve also noticed that some personal Green Cards are a lush dark green while others have a sort of lime color.

Jason
Jason

There is no way they would randomly send people pink cards.

Neat, a shiny rose colored shingle for my shed roof! My AF isn’t up until next year

Is there a date when theses changes are going to be made for existing PRG card holders? Or when new cards for existing holders will be available.

sdsearch

Someone called up Amex the other day and was told new (unspecified by the CSR) benefits were coming to the PRG card on October 4. Why don’t you call and see if you get the same answer if you already have a PRG card?

after 25k 4X grocery, will be 1x? then this card becomes useless to MSers. I know several guys swipe 50k+ grocery on this card monthly.

Deb
Deb

WOW, Amex called me a couple of years ago for spending over 75k in just a YEAR on grocery spend on my husband’s PRG card, and this was not MS spend! How do you guys do this?? Kudos to you!!

TW

Yes Kudos for drawing massive attention to yourselves.

Volunteer for the boosters. Load up two minivans every weekend with drinks and candy to sell at the games.

i would think most of those folks shop at Costco/Sams – which does not code as Grocery for Amex. Costco doesn’t even take Amex, IIRC.

Maybe another bulk seller, like Gordon Food Services?

sdsearch

Banks don’t design their cards for MSers. MSers have to find their own loopholes.

Matt P

Wow, poor poor MSers, I feel so badly for them.

Same here. Got my retention bonus offer last week. And the card is a definite keeper now!

Sa

What did they offer?

LAD

In July I got an offer for 20K MR points for $3K spend in 90 days. I took it and now the card has these changes making it a keeper; so good times.

Sa 10,000 MR points with $1,500 spend.
