The Offer

Direct link to offer

  • Sinemia is a MoviePass competitor. With Sinemia you receive 2 movies per month, the advantage over MoviePass is that it includes premium screens such as 3D, IMAX, Dolby Cinema. You can also book in advance.  You can upgrade your plan as well to receive up to 3 movies per month. They are currently having a spring promo with the following prices:

You can reduce the monthly option by another $2 by using the promo code WINTER. Won’t work on the annual plan.

The Fine Print

  • You receive 2 movies per month, this is actually on a rolling 30 day basis rather than calendar month. For example if you see a movie on April 5th and April 6th you won’t be eligible for another free movie until May 5th, another one will become available on May 6th
  • Your tickets can be used for a 2D or 3D movie on any day. Also, one of your tickets can be used for either of the following technologies of your choice once every 30 days : IMAX 2D, IMAX 3D, XD, Dolby Atmos, ScreenX, Dbox, or 4DX
  • You’re limited to purchasing one movie per day, so a single pass can’t be used by a couple.

Our Verdict

Currently you can get an annual MoviePass membership for $9.95 (although it has been as low as $7.49). That also includes unlimited movies, but no premium screens. I can definitely see an appeal to going for Sinemia over MoviePass if you know you’ll only get to two movies a month and want the premium screens. It’s still much more affordable than buying the tickets individually. That being said MoviePass will be a better option for most readers.

I just signed up last night, the app is slow and keep lagging and crash. I contact customer support desk, it’s non existence. I reach out to them via social media, no help whatsoever. A lot of red flag, so I asked to cancel it, they said it’s nonrefundable. So I have to file a dispute. They said good luck. So just a warning, don’t make the same mistake as me.

Is there any penalty to just signing up for one month at a time? I already have moviepass but I’d like to see Avengers in IMAX, so could I get this for a month, see my two movies and just cancel?

This seems to have way more theaters participating than MoviePass. With needing to pay upfront for a year, any concern over it not being viable?

Something to note: back in February, MoviePass sued Sinemia over patent infringement: http://deadline.com/2018/02/moviepass-sues-sinemia-patent-infringement-1202301605/

Unsure of the future of either companies, but will enjoy benefits of both while the ride lasts.

Does anyone know if this works for iPic theaters?

Look on their site. It lists all the available theaters. I would guess it does. I didn’t notice any theaters in my area that were excluded.

Hmm rolling 30 days is actually a LOT worse than per month. Say you start paying on the 1st, but see movies on 29th and 30th, you’re blocked for the next month, where as a monthly plan would reset on the 1st. Even rolling 28 day would be better since mostly go on weekends. It’s nearly impossible to see 24 movies a year under this scheme! This is very clever of them, and might make their business model more sustainable than MoviePass. The average person will see less than 20 movies a year and less than 9 IMAX even if they’re trying to go frequently.
I’m still tempted, since it includes a theater near my house that’s not on MoviePass.
