Earlier this month Southwest allowed customers flying 737 MAX8 to change their flights for free, including any cost difference between flights. Normally you can change flights for free, but you have to pay any difference in the fare. For example if your original flight cost $80 and the new flight costs $100 then you would be charged $20. Now that the 737 MAX8 has been grounded Southwest is offering an even more generous change policy for the rest of March (this is now probably due to COVID). The rules are as follows:

  • Original flight needs to be in March
  • Flight can be changed to any flight within 14 days either side of original flight
  • Flight your changing to must be the same route (although metro area changes are allowed)

Dans Deals goes into some additional details about this policy here. Honestly this seems overly generous and I’m not 100% sure why Southwest is doing this given they aren’t flying the 737 MAX8 anymore. I can’t see this lasting personally as you’re effectively able to purchase a super cheap flight during an off peak time and then change it into a more expensive peak time flight.

  • I accidentally found this out last year. I booked on an unpreferred date and then decided to change to a preferred date (that had higher costs) and was not charged a difference. I'm hoping to do the same for a trip during spring 2022.

How do any of you determine the promotion is 'active', or are you just randomly trying it like i accidentally did?

I called Southwest and asked them about this 'promotion' and the agent said Southwest did not have any promotion like that.... I'm confused. Maybe this particular agent did not know of it, or... its just a glitch?

  • Hi! I am a college student, and I was trying to book a flight home during the holidays and was wondering if this policy/travel hack still applies to Nov/Dec of this year? I'm flying from Sacramento/San Francisco to Hartford, Ct.

    • Ashley - I would not recommend relying on this hack for the holidays. It hasn't worked well for the past two months or so

  • It appears that the new policy is +- 14 days (no longer 30 days) and only for flights with schedule (or flight number) changes. Although not nearly as generous as before, this makes more sense from a business viewpoint.

      • You need an existing flight for this to work now. The change window has rolled through 11/6 so if you didn't have a flight from 9/6-11/6 already on the books, you cannot use this method for that time. And no this isnt limited to MAX flights.

      • Schedule changes. 15-20 minutes difference in departure time. I'm getting more emails about them now. Almost all of my flights up til 11/3 have schedule changes.

  • Should probably mark as dead or at least highly YMMV. Just tried on six MAX flights in next few weeks and no free change offered
