The Offer
- SPG is currently selling points with a 35% discount until July 20th, 2018. You need to purchase a minimum of 5,000 points to receive this discount. Normally points would cost you 3.5¢ per point, under this promotion you’ll pay 2.275¢ per point.
The Fine Print
- Transactions must be completed between 9:00 AM ET June 15, 2018 and 11:59 PM ET July 20, 2018 to be eligible for the discount. Purchased points do not count towards Preferred Guest, Gold Preferred Guest, or Platinum Preferred Guest Status. Transactions are final and nonrefundable. All other terms and conditions of the Starwood Preferred Guest Program apply.
- Please Note: Excluding promo periods, cost is $.035 per point. Purchase up to 30,000 per account per calendar year; points are applicable toward all Starpoint awards but do not count toward elite status. All other Starwood Preferred Guest program rules, terms and conditions apply
- Starpoints earned by using your Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card from American Express will post to your Starwood Preferred Guest account 6-12 weeks after the end of each month.
- Starpoint purchases can be made by members whose accounts have been active for a minimum of 14 days. Accounts that are less than the required 14 days in age will have the purchase attempt cancelled.
Our Verdict
You can make the deal better by going through a portal for another 1.5% through Topcashback. That will drop your cost per point to 2.24¢, plus whatever credit card rewards you earn. Keep in mind that also translates into Marriott points for 0.746¢ per point. People might want to purchase SPG points for two reasons:
Also might be useful for standard use. I think that 2.24¢ is still far too expensive, but that will depend on your travel habits. I know some people manufacture spending at 1x SPG point instead of 2%+ cash back, so might be a good offer for them.
SPG is dead now that the Starwood card only earns 2 Marriott points rather than the current 3 point per dollar of regular spend. That coupled with the fact that the cost of Marriott hotel / flight packages has gone up considerably means that SPG reward program is no longer worthwhile unless you actually stay at Marriott / SPG properties.
Can I “erase” the purchase with Capital one venture? Working on that card’s MSR since I just opened it to get another TSA precheck for family member.
If I buy points on my AMEX SPG card for my wife’s SPG account, will the 2x points post to my account or my wife’s account?
Post to whoever’s card that you use to purchase.
It’s also YMMV. I used my spg business card (trying to meet min spend) and did not receive 2x points.. If you have an ink preferred, I’d use that, as it is known to code as 3x w/points.com
N00b question. Is this offer one-time only? Or can one buy 15,000 points in two separate transactions and get 35% off both times?
Yes, you can split your purchases. But you do know that the SPG program merges with Marriott soon ?
Will the $60 off $300 amex offer stack with this?
Also interested to know this!
Nope.
Any thoughts of buying these to help meet the min spend on Amex SPG cards (just got personal and bus)? I usually never buy points as it usually seems like a bad deal. Are they worth the 2.175 cents that Abey mentioned?
Shouldn’t be an issue if buying with amex to qualify for minimum spend.
Is it safe to use points.com purchases for minimum spend on Chase cards? Or is there a danger it gets treated as gift card / cash advance / flagged for clawing back sign-up bonus? I’m lol/24 with 5 new Chase cards in the last 24 months and a little worried I am risking manual review before too long. Thank you!
You’re buying points. It’s a legitimate purchase.
hm. curious wat exactly is ur definition of lol/24 if you think points.com could be treated as a gift card or cash advance?
Is 35% the best offer that AmEx has historically offered?
Publicly, yes. Some folks were targeted for a 50% discount last year though it was rare. Also, may be last chance to buy SPG points before the merger.
I think so. I’ve heard of 50% off targeted only. I have never been targeted myself.
The 50% was extremely targeted in a buy last year. Given the disappearance of SPG points in 6 weeks, I’d bet my house that’s never coming back. will they do it with Marriott points afterwards? Depends on how customers take to the new program, I’d imagine.
If you have a Starwood AMEX and buy 30K Starpoints for $682.50 you will earn 1,366 Starpoints for the purchase, so effectively you’ll pay $682.50 for 31,366 Starpoints, or 2.175 cents per Starpoint or 0.725 cents per Marriott point. Its good but i’m not buying…
@Abey
Why would you earn 1,366 points when the purchase is only $682.50? I don’t think you get 2X for points purchase.
You do. Even though the purchase is through points.com, you still get 2x if using an SPG Amex.
Not sure about that I just bought 25k in points bought using spg personal and got 1x not 2x
@A
Perhaps you have to wait until your statement closes?
@BW
That’s good to know. Thank you.
I can confirm you do get 2X SPG points when using your Starwood card. Make sure you select it from the payment options
I also can confirm two times points using the SPG business card.
I did not receive 2x from my SPG business. Statement just closed. Selected “SPG American Express” when checking out.
This is always YMMV. I have bought spg points earlier this year with spg biz card and earned only 1x.
If you guys have ink preferred, you might earn 3x on points.com purchase ( also YMMV)
