- Steak ‘n Shake is offering a free milkshake when you download the app. You actually get a $2.99 credit so it can be used for things other than a milkshake but it’s advertised as a free milkshake.
Our Verdict
You don’t actually need to make any other purchase, you can just get the milkshake for completely free. I’ll add this to our list of ways to get free food.
One just opened a couple towns over from me in Warminster PA(Philly suburbs) but they had a kitchen fire about 24 hours after their grand opening and they had to close down.. damage was fairly extensive so they are still closed a few weeks later. Hoping they open again soon so I can go check it out(and use this deal!)
Does the $2.99 credit expire?
Thanks for the heads up. There’s one about 2 miles from me, and I didn’t feel like making dinner tonight. Ordered a $4 value meal and the $2.99 came off right away when ordering for a total of $1 plus tax. I very rarely go there and have avoided buying the gift cards but may keep that in mind to stack with the app loyalty rewards.
Just downloaded it but I don’t see anything that indicates that I have/will receive $2.99 in my account.

Spoke too soon, I received an email shortly after downloading/registering an account.
“Welcome to Steak ‘n Shake! Thank you for downloading the Steak ‘n Shake app!
You have already earned the opportunity to get a free regular milk shake ($2.99 reward) on your first app purchase. Just use your downloaded Steak ‘n Shake app after associating a payment method and this reward will automatically be applied to your first transaction.”
Further down..
“In addition to your first transaction offer, for every $50 you spend using the app, you will automatically earn $5.00 in rewards to redeem on a future in-store or Order Ahead purchase.”
The loyalty $5 after spending $50 works well with the discounted S&S cards from Sam’s (or BJ’s). You can buy 2x$25 for $39.99.
That kind of stuff can keep the pounds on, not off.
As with anything, moderation. It takes me about a year to go through the $50 in gift cards. But I will say they have great salads there. 🙂
I hear you, but it’s the whole ‘walking through the door’ thing that I am trying to avoid.

Allow me to provide a warning: When you get the shake, hold the cup securely but not tightly. I got a free shake for my birthday and held too tightly when placing in my car cup holder… sadly, the lid popped and there was chocolate shake everywhere in my car. 🙁
What was left in the cup was excellent. They have great shakes!
Hadnt eaten at a Steak n’ Shake in years and did last week, while in Atlanta – law of diminishing returns. Even the Varsity wasn’t what I remembered,
If only Steak N Shake had been on the ball…..hahah.
