Synchrony Launches Norwegian Airlines Cobranded Credit Card

Synchrony has launched a new cobranded credit card in partnership with Norwegian Airlines. Unfortunately the card isn’t that interesting, let’s take a quick look:

  • No annual fee
  • Sign up bonus of $50 in CashPoints when you spend $500 or more within the first 90 days of account opening
  • No foreign transaction fees
  • Priority Boarding
  • Card earns at the following rates:
    • 2% extra on Norwegian
    • 2% on dining + grocery
    • 1% on all other purchases

Small sign up bonus and card benefits aren’t useful at all. Can’t really see why anybody would sign up for this card. For more information on Synchrony credit cards click here.

Norwegian has a non zero risk of being cut off by the major credit card issuers. They are a big credit risk to them if they sell fares and go bankrupt after taking the money from the banks. Banks would have to repay the customers for the travel not delivered (at least in the USA).

So this may preparation for the day when Norwegian is cutoff by the majors. There may fine print in here that if Norwegian goes under, and you had a fare paid for with this card, that Synchrony would NOT be on the hook to refund you. I’d check that out closely if someone was thinking about it.

Or they may get to the point where this card is the only one that doesn’t have to pay a card surcharge on the Norwegian web site (reflecting that loss of protection).

Personally I just wouldn’t be booking travel on them that was far away in time. Given what happened with Wow, Eurowings, Thomas Cook etc. its just not really worth it.

I usually fly Norwegian Air when going down to the Bahamas so this may actually be of some use to me.

I see the only benefit as no AF and no foreign transaction fees, meaning if you want a card that fills this void and don’t want to deal with the major banks or that triple pull from capital one. Otherwise, no use…

It’s Synchrony, never heard of any card from them with a signup bonus or stellar benefits.

The Paypal MC runs SUB promotions every few months. And their own limited release 2% card has a SUB too
