I loaded my Citibank checking account with this TAB debit card, next month my TAB account was closed due to gaming. So there’s such a cap in case your rewards is higher than a certain amount you are flagged. Kind of reminds me the PayPal cash card where you could purchase from CVS before 2016. So if you want to take advantage of this, try no more than 5K a month and see how it goes. Good luck and have fun

Shut down.
Ironically told my “gaming behavior” was doing the bare minimum, which couldnt be further from the truth.
I used this useless 1% card EVERYWHERE for organic spend. At least 40 organic swipes/month > $5.

….

What they really meant was “oof, stop the other things costing us so much money in rewards, we no likey! GaMiNg BeHaViOr BeTtEr ClOsE aCcOuNt!!1!”

My transactions were not consistent with daily use. I bought gas and groceries a few times, but with these as credit card bonus categories, most of my transactions were with debit only merchants. I would have much rather have had a monthly cap like other Kasasa Cards.

Got this by Email from Account Support Operations team:
———————————————–
This letter is to inform you that your Kasasa Cash Back Rewards Checking account has been reviewed and found to contain activity consistent with gaming. This activity includes debit card transactions being made in a calculated and limited fashion simply to meet monthly qualifications. The decision has been made to close your account for gaming. Any rewards earned that have not been credited to your account already will be forfeited.

If the account contains a remaining balance, the funds will be mailed to you by check, to the address indicated on our current records and payable to the account holder(s).

If you feel there has been an error, we urge to contact us immediately.

Customer Experience Department
(800) 355-3063
——————————————

I called and told them that “there has been an error” (as the Email said), but I was told that it was “suspicious” that money was deposited and then used and that I only used two merchants. The decision can not be reversed.

I got the same letter today. I didn’t know using only a couple of merchants is considered gaming. I guess no point calling them then.

Blue Ghost (Blue Ghost),

The exact reason may not have been known to CS (even though I was told that I “only” had two merchants).

Other reasons, that may have triggered the system, may have been:
1. I often made two charges from the same merchant on the same day – but different amounts and different cards (P1 & P2).
2. I made large deposits, and charged the account the same day.

How about you? Any similarities in behavior?

I also made large deposits and start charging the account the same day but it took days to spend the money. I have made >1 charge at the same merchant on the same day using the same card. Was your P2 account shut down as well?

We had one account, but 2 cards (P1 primary and P2 joint).

I hoped that if two different cards were used at the same merchant, on the same day, it may not trigger a review. Maybe it doesn’t matter if two different cards were used vs one. The trigger may simply be the same merchant.

I was more aggressive than you. I made a large deposit and spent it the same day. That could also have been a trigger for me.

A third reason for a manual review may have been my large cash back. Maybe accounts with large cash backs are automatically sent for review.

It would be great if others could chime in with their behaviors and whether they were shut down or not.

We are thinking about applying again, starting with P2 being the primary and possibly adding me (P1) later…

Did 30K worth of Apple Pay transactions for $300 in interest in December, then the shutdown letter in January. So effectively like a $300 bank account bonus before it ended. Based on other comments, the dollar amount may not have mattered with multiple daily transactions from the same “merchant”. Interesting to hear if anyone survived the carnage.

Looks like of the best debit transactions do not count as purchases. Both Cash App and Venmo authorized as “Debit Card W/D,” but posted as “Transfer,” and I imagine these “transfers” won’t count as transactions. Oh well, sometimes you’ve gotta be the datapoint.

This morning my card was declined. I called in found out my Daily spending limit is 2k. I asked the rep to could I raise it and she said “If I needed to spend more than 2k just call them” .

Were you able to raise your spending limit permanently? Or do you have to call each day you want to spend above $2000? Thanks.

No, I plan on seasoning the account for 6 months then calling in to see if I could get it raised permanently.

Thank you for your feedback. It would be useful to hear if you are successful in obtaining an increase in the limit after 6 months.

Datapoint, FWIW — Just completed my first full month of Cash Rewards checking. Works as advertised, got $100+ reward cash credited on Oct 30. Be sure to comply with the 15/$5 requirement, also note that the monthly qualification cycle begin/end dates vary each month. Supplements but doesn’t necessarily replace regular MS, but:
Happy so far.

Two other FYI points: (1) They are currently throttling me to $2k per day spend, not sure if that will change as account ages. (2) Although you can set up bank-to-bank ACH transfers on their end, they apparently don’t allow new accounts to “pull” from an external bank; I bypassed the problem by setting up this acct with my other accounts, so I can “push” from those external accounts.

I’m wondering if I still have the 2% account… I never closed it and the interest rates are so pitiful everywhere I was thinking of using it again, but as is typical with TAB when you log in to look at your account, or look at the statements, there’s no information on the interest rate or other rules for it.
