[Expired] [Live, Works with GCs] Target: Spend $50 on 11/24/17 and get a 20% Storewide Coupon

Deal has expired. Never miss another deal by signing up for notifications.

[Updated. Reposting 112/4 since it’s now live. A reader notes that a $50 Target gift card purchase is working to trigger the coupon. That makes it ridiculously easy to do this deal if you value it.]

The Offer

Direct Link

The Target  Black Friday ad is out and it shows the following deal (toward end of ad):

  • Shop $50 or more at Target stores or online on November 24th and get a coupon for 20% off at Target stores to be used November 28th through December 10th

The Fine Print

  • $50 spend must be in a single transaction
  • Coupon will come via email on November 25th for online orders; for -in-store orders you’ll get the coupon at the register
  • Coupon valid November 28th through December 10th
  • The initial spend can be done in-store or online. Unclear whether the 20% off will work online too or only in-store.
  • Limit one 20% coupon per guest
  • Category Coupon. Valid one-time use only. Limit one identical coupon per guest. Percent off coupon will apply to all qualifying items in transaction. Cannot be combined with any other Category Coupon. This coupon for use by original recipient only. Void if copied, scanned, altered, transferred, purchased, sold or prohibited by law. Promo code may not be applied to previous orders. Gift cards and tax not included in determining purchase total. No cash value. *Excludes alcohol, Apple products, Bose, CVS clinic & pharmacy, dairy milk, DSLR cameras & lenses, Duluth Pack, Elf on the Shelf, select games (Cards Against Humanity, Joking Hazard, Exploding Kittens, What Do You Meme, Bears vs. Babies), gift cards, Google products, GoPro, LEGO, LG OLED TV, Mobile contracts, Nintendo hardware & Switch software, Playstation 4, prepaid cards, Pulsar watches, Sonos, Target Optical, Traeger, Tylenol pain relief, Weber, WellieWishers, Xbox One, Xbox One X.
  • The $50 minimum will calculate after all discounts were applied
  • CVS pharmacy, clinic, and optical are excluded (terms sound like they are excluded from being part of the $50; not sure if they are excluded from using the coupon)
  • Unclear if buying a $50 Target gift card will trigger the coupon (I’d guess third-party gift cards will work)

Our Verdict

The 20% off coupon is quite generous as it there isn’t any volume limit. The major question: what is the ‘some exclusions apply’ limitation. If you can get 20% off expensive electronics, it’s an excellent deal, otherwise most people will just be able to get $10-$50 of value out of this on regular shopping and holiday shopping. Still a nice deal.

Another thing I don’t like about this deal is that it might be meant to replace the yearly ‘10% off Target gift cards‘ deal. We’ll see.

This deal pops up most years and IIRC has been in place for many years. Excludes Apple plus some other electronics.

Perhaps I am not following but does this mean that if I go into Target and spend $50, I will somehow get emailed a coupon for this 20% deal? Do I need to present anything to the cashier or are there instructions? I apologize if I am missing it.

I zoomed in on the image at Target’s website and it says to see the coupon for more details. I’m not following where I would go to get these details.

When I pull up the direct link, the fine print says “Your $50 purchase must be made in a single transaction on 11/24/17 between 12:01 am local time and store close, or online 11/24/17 starting at midnight PST until 11:59 pm PST. Qualifying online guests will receive coupon via email on 11/25/17.”

I interpret that as you can get the coupon for $50 spend either in-store or online. No info on whether the coupon is good online, too.

The coupon will only be emailed if you do an online purchase. (It’s not stated, but I assume you’ll get a printed coupon if you purchase in-store.)

It’s in store only? And they’ll send the coupon by email the next day? I don’t trust the cashier to be able to do this right that will result in me getting the email.

can you buy a target gift card with another target gift card to qualify for the spending and get the coupon?

I have an egiftcard in my account and tried. Does not work it won’t let you apply gc to target gc.

The fine print clearly says you can do the $50 spend online.

When I zoom in on the direct link, it says: “Your $50 purchase must be made in a single transaction in stores on 11/24/17 between 12:01 am local time and store close, *or online* 11/24/17 starting at midnight PST until 11:59 pm PST. Qualifying *online guests* will receive coupon via email on 11/25/17.”

(emphasis mine)

The way I read it, only online orders will receive the emailed coupon. I’m not sure how the in-store purchases will get the coupon – maybe a print out.

No details on the restrictions for the coupon, and whether or not it can be used online.

When they say single transaction does this mean the item value is $50 or more or your total in purchases must be $50 or more?

This definitely was offered 2 years ago, in addition to the 10% off gift cards. And I think last year too.

Tried to dig up an old thread, but was 20% off with $75 spend at least once: http://hip2save.com/2015/11/27/target-spend-75-in-store-or-online-today-get-20-off-coupon-redeemable-starting-124/

In the past no great options for the coupon, an excerpt or exclusions, from that thread: “Excludes…Gift Cards, Legos, elf if the shelf, vitamix, DSLR camera and lenses, chrome cast, Apple, nose, plays ration 4, xbox one,Nintendo,…”

I don’t track the details, but anecdotally recall this coupon offer coming up the Friday after Thanksgiving (to get you to return, after the door busters sell out on thanksgiving) for a few years, in some form. The gift cards one is a few days after thanksgiving sales are over, to entice you to buy gift cards for for gift for people you didn’t already buy physical items for, and discourage you buying the gift card to then buy the physical gifts. That’s my 2 cents marketing opinion, but personally would be surprised if the 10% offer doesn’t return. If anything, I could see them nerf it to $100 or something, but certainly don’t see it getting axed.

Discover card has an additional 5% cash back on Target (or Amazon) purchases Q4. I’ve been waiting for this deal (similar deal the past two years) and the 10% of Target gift card deals. Will be maxing out the $1500 per quarter limit easily.

My closest Target is right next door to a Staples; I buy Target gift cards with my Amex Biz for 5% cash back. I generally use Target gift cards for much of my purchase, then pay for the rest with a Citi card so I can use the Citi Price Rewind to look for price drops. If I’m buying books, toys, kids clothes or seasonal items I tend to put more on the Citi and less on the Target giftcard, since for me those categories most frequently end up with price drops. If I’m buying milk and bread it all goes on the giftcards, since Citi doesn’t price rewind those.

If there is something in the store that the kids want today, but you see it at amazon or another large online store for less, Target will price match at customer service. And then you can still pay with Target giftcard + Citicard with price rewind to get the difference if the price drops further.

Doesn’t Citi price rewind require the entire transaction be paid with Citi otherwise they only match up to the amount you paid with your Citi card?

The rest of your comment, you seem to confirm that Target gift cards qualify for this, is this right? If so, buying them with a credit card or using them to buy something at Target, or both?

Christine B

Citi price rewind will only match up to the amount I paid with my Citi card. For example, if I spend $100 on my cart of a dozen items ($75 with Target gift cards + $25 with my citi card) the most I could get refunded in this case would be $25.

I don’t know if the spend $50 on Friday, get 20% coupon would work for the PURCHASE of gift cards…but I anticipate you could spend $50 on Friday using your Discover to get an additional 5% off the $50 Friday purchase.

I imagine the spend $50 on Friday, get 20% coupon would work if you spent the $50 on your Discover, cash, check, or using Target giftcards (which you hopefully bought at a discount or using your Discover card this quarter).

But I don’t know for sure…will find out on Black Friday

I’ve heard of people taking these 20% off coupons and selling them on ebay at auction. Some have sold for as much as $150 just for a single coupon :o.

I you could do that, you might be able to buy something AND get it for free after selling the 20% coupon.

Which amex biz card gets 5% at target? Tia

I have the Simply Cash Business Card, which gets me 5% cash back at office supply stores. Office supply stores sell Target gift cards. So I buy my Target gift cards at the Staples (which is right next door to my Target), get the 5% cash back, then use those gift cards at Target.

I do this too and the best part is you can load the target gift cards on your phone and not have to carry around target gc all the time

Curious to know if there’s a dollar amount limit for the transaction applying the 20% coupon.

I just did this deal. Worked online for $50 Target gift card. Got confirmation that I’d receive 20% off coupon within 24 hours.

Did you buy an e-gift card, or did you have a physical gift card mailed to you?

Electronic gift card. I have it already. Bought online, not going into store today. 20% off coupon has many exclusions including gift cards.
