The Fine Print

  • This offer is not transferable and may only be used by the person to whom it is addressed
  • Valid until December 26th, 2016

Our Verdict

I’ve seen targeted offers as high as $500 in the past, but $400 is still a pretty great deal. I wish these weren’t targeted as it would definitely be one of the best cash sign up bonuses available! If you got targeted then let us know why you think you might have been targeted in the comments below.

Looking at my Alliant offers for the past year, I received a 30,000 for $2500 spending early this year and a 35,000 for $2500 offer this summer. I am tempted to jump on this but the lack of a 0% interest rate period is leaning me away.

has anyone been able to phone in to get the offer if they did not receive an email?

I just got the email this morning (Saturday 29th). I opened a checking account earlier this year for the $50 bonus since I wanted to use their HSA account anyway. I have about $900 that has been sitting between checking and HSA for about half a year now. I haven’t touched the accounts at all since I opened them.

Any idea how stringent they are with applications in terms of number of credit cards opened recently, etc?

Hey Doc! (William Charles)

I got my email invitation for this card yesterday. The extent of my prior relationship with Alliant was using them for the Share Secure Loan Technique, which you describe here:

https://www.doctorofcredit.com/strengthen-credit-installment-loan-using-secured-loan-technique/

It looks like the Technique may be be useful for getting great CC deals from Alliant as well as its principal purpose (raising your credit score 30 points).

Were you targeted while still building your credit or are you already in the good range?

My credit score was very high (820s) before I opened my Alliant loan. I only did that because I was developing a step-by-step guidance on the whole SS Loan Technique that would walk any person through how to do it. So I needed to know literally every single minute step of the process, including what screens an applicant would see.

I think Alliant targeted me for an offer like this maybe a month after I opened the loan with them, so that was back in April maybe, but it wasn’t quite as good of a deal as this one is.

Oh, didn’t realize you were the author. Thank you very much for that guide! You just had me overexcited that they were giving these deals to those still in the credit-build phase

My guess is that, in order to get targeted for the promotion, you need to have both a credit score that makes them happy AND you need to have a prior relationship with them.

Believe it or not, Alliant has given better versions of this offer. A couple days ago I asked the people who are following a thread about the Alliant SS Loan approach if any of them had gotten this recent offer, and here is what one guy said:

“I received a $500 offer soon after getting the loan but I didn’t want a new card at the time. I then received a $350 offer during the summer. I didn’t take that one either because I was hoping to get the $500 offer again. I have not received this new $400 offer yet. Perhaps they have given up on me. LOL. Here is one of the threads:

$500 for a minimum spend of $2500 is far better than $400 for an MS of $4000.

QUESTION: Does anyone have an idea whether the Alliant Visa we are talking about tends to code the funding of bank accounts as purchases or as cash advances?

The $4000 spending requirement may be a challenge for me, since I try to keep my spending very low. (I put almost all my extra money into retirement and into saving for a home.)

I also just snapped up the two BoA business cards ($200 bonus each) which will involve another $1000 of spending.

If I could use the Alliant Visa to fund bank accounts without incurring CA fees that would clinch the decision for me. Please let me know if anyone has even a guess!

I received the targeted offer by email. Anyone have any experience in applying multiple times?

I applied and received the offer a year ago at this Holiday Season. Wondering if I can apply this year again for a second time? I still have last years CC active (in my drawer.)

I saw this in the fine print: “Introductory rate and incentive offers, including bonus points, are not available to those members who in the previous six months have had (i) an open Alliant Visa credit card account, or (ii) an outstanding balance on a closed Alliant Visa credit card account.”

I guess you can apply again once the old card is closed for over 6 months.

I just got this same email an hour ago. First time getting an offer from Alliant. Looks like they pull from equifax and sometimes experian.

I was targeted. I have had a checking account with them for a few years. I have a decent amount of cash mostly sitting there. It used to be a fairly active hub for me, back when I was doing higher volume MOs, but for the last year or two it’s had little activity. I keep receiving these offers, and will likely do this one.

Hi Dave, did you notice their offers keep getting better each time if you didn’t respond to earlier ones?

@Skyriver – The opposite – I got the $500 but didn’t take it. Then I got the $350 offer but didn’t take it. Now…I didn’t get this offer.

@Jack – Whaaaat? That doesn’t make any sense!! I’m sure you’ll get better offers next time!

I would imagine they are only targeting existing members since it is a credit union. I also see that the offer shown above says “You’re preapproved…” which makes me even more convinced it’s for existing members because Alliant would have info on them to set up pre-screen parameters.
