Our Verdict

I don’t actually think this offer is that great considering the cards just recently offered 60,000 points (business card still offering that). The Chase Southwest companion pass requires 110,000 points in a calendar year, by getting two cards you had 120,000 points and a companion pass. This is made better by the fact that you can time it so the points post in 2018 and then you have the bonus for all of 2018 and 2019. With this offer you get 40,000 points (20,000 points less than previously offered) and the companion pass for one year. If you got the business card it doesn’t even count to your 5/24 total. Personally I don’t really understand the hype around this offer when you break it down like that. The previous deal was much better.

Just applied for the Business card. They asked me to call in after I submitted the application, asked a few extra questions. They put me on hold and then told me I had the card.

What if you do the first purchase by end of Nov to get CP, then wait to spend the full $1,000 by early January to get the 40k points, then do business card any time in 2018 for the 60k? Only 9k points of spending to get GP for 2018-9, plus you get CP for the rest of this year and for early 2018 while you meet spend requirements.

Am I missing something here? Seems possible to get best of both?

For such little work, this is a fantastic offer. Are there any referrals for this? Is a California address required?

anybody, know how to get this, my daughter lives in CA, and this would be perfect for them right now. Is it an email, or should she try to book a flight maybe then it will show?

We are into Oct now. Suggestion here is to apply and get the card, but do not make the first purchase until Jan 1st. That should result in getting the CP for all of 2018 & 2019. Chase is fairly generous with the time allowed to meet the minimum spend in a period greater than 90 days, but you would need to do the rest of the 1k spend in Jan pretty fast for the 40k points.

Getting two SW card under 524? Don’t be ridiculous… 80% of the readers here won’t be able to do that ever.

Both my wife and I had really hard time in the past getting approved for Business cards with Chase. We don’t have a “registered” business or separate TIN, so we both had to call reconsideration line at Chase and provide “data” on how much money the business made “year over year” and many other details. It was complicated and nerve-wrecking process. We both ended up getting approved, with my wife having more problems than me. I’m sure if you have a DBA name and TIN and have tons of business spend, it’s probably a lot easier. But for people without that, my experience has been not at all easy.

Just curious – but what’s the deal with CA?

@Joe Southwest is in a turf war with Alaska/Virgin right now. Presumably this is a carrot for CA folks to stick with/move to Southwest

It could be useful in my case.

Only got the premier version before the 60k goes away. Haven’t got the card yet.

If I apply for this one and just make one purchase, I could get CP for one year.

Meet the minimum spending of both cards at end of December should get me at least 103k points. Make another 7k points before this CP expires to secure CP for 2019.

Miss 20k points but get extra 2.5 month of CP. Not so great but it’s still something.

Now, how do they tell if you are from California? By mailing address?

I am surprised that Southwest is overtly promoting the CP. It takes quite a bit of flights/spend/points for those not opening credit cards. It was originally my opinion that the new crush of people applying for and using the CP with the recent bonuses would be the death knell of the pass.

Perhaps, Southwest sees a loyalty aspect out of essentially a 50% discount on flights and it also seems that Southwest is very willing to do things that distinguish it in a good way from both the legacy and LC carriers (ie 2 free bags not going away anytime soon).

This is an amazing offer for non-churners. 1k in 3 months is doable for most folks, and 40k points with the companion pass will go a long way.

Yes and no. Not everybody can get two cards. I have many credit cards with Chase and had to call reconsideration number to get my second card approved. The guy on the reconsideration line gave me really hard time about it. At first it was just “no, you have too many credit cards and too much credit with us” (all true). I had to twist his arm to get him to move some credit from a different card and allow me to open a new account. Many people would’ve given up on that call (I almost did, just kept repeating “well, is there anything I can do to change that decision” till he finally gave in). Also, now my timing is really tight. I know that “theoretically” I have 115 days (with some datapoints on reddit of Chase denying 115 days and limiting people to 90 days, and some datapoints on reddit of Chase points posting early, before the spend even completed).

So if everything works out as it’s supposed to – I will have companion pass at the beginning of 2018 and 120,000 points. It already took some work and persistence to just get approved for the second card, and will take more work to watch the spending and make sure everything posts on time.

Honestly – I would’ve jumped on the 40,000 points + easy companion pass offer. And I have gotten CP twice already (first me for two years, then my wife for two years). I will would’ve jumped on the “easy” offer. I’m not lazy, but I’m more of a “bird in the hand” kind of guy.
