Our Verdict
Ok, 150,000 points is a lot but so is $30,000 in spend. Let’s work out if this is actually a good deal or not. The standard offer on this card is 80,000 points after $3,000 in spend (plus 7,500 points for authorized user) and without the annual fee waived.
So this offer is basically an additional 70,000 points for an extra $27,000 in spend, you’re also saving the $85 on the annual fee in the first year. If we put that $27,000 spend on a 2% card we’d earn $540, if we take into account the $85 annual fee it’s $455.
That means you’re basically paying $455 for 70,000 Marriott points or 0.65¢ per point. Personally I don’t think that’s good value. If you converted that to SPG points you’d be paying 1.95¢ per point.
I’m anticipating Marriott will devalue their Rewards Program soon.
I don’t think you have it right. I got the offer and it says you get 5x points on all purchases “up to” $30k. Then it reverts back to 5x for Marriott, 2x airline, 1x other. I don’t see any mention of minimum spend.
Yeah there is no minimum spend required, it’s 5x points per $1 spent – that’s what I have in the post?
Just got Targeted too: 473,000 Marriot Reward points for ONLY $90,000 spend! Annual fee is only $799, but WAIVED the first year! LOL
I give CHASE credit for one thing here: it incentivizes spending beyond the usual 3 month signup bonus period. Ironic that during the first year it’s really for big NON-MARRIOTT spenders since the regular card would give them 5X for thatvanyway. BUT, it might be useful for those planning to spend over $15,000 on typical non-bonus categories (like medical bills) who want to acquire a large number of Marriott points and already had an SPG AMEX in the past.
Not to mention the fact that if you just put that $27,000 of spend on an SPG card you would get 81,000 Marriott points instead of 70,000.
I think we will be seeing more of this trend in the near future, as issuers try harder to tie the bonuses to making the card front-of-wallet.
Or.. $27k with plastiq 2x small biz on SPG = 162,000 marriott.. for $675 in fees..
