[Expired] [Targeted] Chase Offers/BofA: Get $5 off $50 at Walmart Grocery

Deal has expired, view more Walmart grocery deals by clicking here.

Update 6/25/19: Deal is back and valid until 7/18/19

The Offer

Check your Chase Offers to see if you were targeted:

  • Get $5 back on your online Walmart Grocery purchase of $50+.

A number of banks use the same back end for these offers. This includes: Chase, Bank of America, Regions Bank, Suntrust Bank, BBVA, BB&T, PNC, Columbia Bank, Beneficial Bank, and Christian Community CU. You can read this post for more information.

The Fine Print

  • Offer valid one time only.
  • Offer expires July 17th, 2019.
  • Offer not valid on prescription purchases.
  • Offer not valid on tobacco products purchases.
  • Offer not valid on third-party purchases.

Our  Verdict

Save it on the Freedom for 5x this quarter as Walmart Grocery has been coding properly as Grocery Stores. Update: some readers comment that Walmart Grocery has not been coding as grocery for them on Chase Freedom. Should also be able to stack it with $10 off code.

In my chase freedom, it is showing that the offer expires on 06/02/2019.

Same for me.

Actually, the neighborhood Walmart grocery stores have not been coding properly. I challenged Chase on this and they offered me “courtesy” points due to the inconvenience but they told me that any additional charges to the card would not code as “grocery” and only apply at 1x instead of 5x.

In-store purchases will not code as grocery. This deal is talking about orders placed at grocery.walmart.com for pickup (you drive up and they load your car). You take chances if you order things like fresh fruit and vegetables, since it’s some employee filling the order who may not know (or care) about ripeness.

I’ll have to see if that works. I know in-store purchases haven’t been coding grocery but I’ll have to check that out and see if online purchases will code differently. Thanks for the feedback Ben. Have you had success with grocery.walmart.com coding as grocery on Freedom and getting 5x?

On the Visa Supplier Locator for my area:

– Walmart: INDUSTRY/MCC “Discount Stores/Warehouse/Wholesale – 5310”
– Walmart Supercenter INDUSTRY/MCC “Grocery Stores/ Supermarkets/ Bakeries – 5411”
– Walmart Neighborhood Market INDUSTRY/MCC “Business/Professional Services – 5969

From that list it looks as if a Walmart Supercenter purchase (MCC 5411) should code as grocery for Chase, but not WNM (MCC 5969) which actually is a grocery store.

I love Walmart grocery and have they have amazing customer service if ANYTHING isn’t correct they will instantly refund your credit card and sometimes give you a $5-$10 account credit for your next purchase… we have put almost $1k on her freedom and have only been getting 1x… looks like I need to call and get them to change that up to 5x since it is coding as groceries as with Amex for the Blue Cash Preferred. Chase is also fairly good for their customer service.

Even though Chase is clear about Walmart not earning bonus grocery points, they should mention that Walmart Neighborhood Markets (grocery stores) are also excluded, which do code as groceries on, for example, Amex.

It’s very misleading of Chase, then, to show a Walmart Neighborhood Market transaction online as ‘groceries’ and not expect cardholders to think they’re getting bonus points for the purchase.

Chase also doesn’t detail on your statement whether the purchase is in the bonus category or not. You have to add all the purchases together yourself if you want to check whether a ‘grocery’ purchase gets bonus points (or not).

Look in the transactions in chase on desktop and it’ll show you how many points each transaction earned. Also shows in the UR portal the earn rate.

Yes that’s true, but, unless I’m mistaken, that’s available for the current period only. Statements don’t show any detail.

The problem (and others have called with the same complaint) is that its listed as a ‘grocery’ purchase, and that’s misleading when no bonus points are awarded for the ‘grocery’ purchase.

The complaint is valid, however the stores in question are in the guidelines given by chase that walmart and target and other superstores may not count to this category. So anything that does work is YMMV.

This may be a surprise to people the first time around, but after that, anyone gaming this knows they may not get it. Here is the exact text from chase:

GROCERY STORES(1)
not including walmart and target purchases

Yes, the MCC marks it as probably groceries, but they’ve said these are excluded.

What is included in the Grocery Stores category?
Merchants in the Chase Freedom Grocery stores category that does not include Walmart® and Target® purchases, includes supermarkets as well as smaller grocery stores. Please note that some merchants that sell grocery items are not included in this category; for example, larger stores that sell a wide variety of goods, such as Target®, Walmart®, discount stores, warehouse clubs, and some smaller merchants such as drugstores and merchants that specialize in only a few grocery items. In addition, please note that purchases made at gas stations operated by merchants who also operate grocery stores are not included in this category.

Walmart Grocery is not the same as Walmart.

Electroman

In-store? No, never does. The Wal-Marts around me do code as grocery stores (I can tell from my BOA statements), but Chase has excluded them from grocery store rewards. However, this page is about grocery.walmart.com purchases. Many people are getting 5x back from Chase for this, but others aren’t.

Darn, I just redeemed the 5% Walmart Grocery offer a week or two ago, and did not receive this one.

Got this before but useless for my location. I don’t ever get the ones that would be of use. So overall chase offers has not been good for me since it launched. Only used Starbucks offer and that was a one time thing.
