[Expired] [Targeted] eBay Sellers: Sign Up For eBay Managed Payments & Get $50-$250 Invoice Credit

Deal has ended, view more eBay deals by clicking here.

The Offer

Sent out via e-mail, unknown subject line

  • eBay is offering some eBay sellers a $250 invoice credit when they sign up for eBay managed payments by July 10th, 2020.
  • Some people have the same offer but for a smaller credit (e.g $50)

The Fine Print

  • Invited sellers (“Sellers”) who successfully register for managed payments, pursuant to the terms and conditions set forth herein, will receive a $250 credit on their next invoice. The invoice credit will be applied by August 31, 2020.
  • The Promotion is available to Sellers who: (i) were contacted by eBay inviting them to participate in the offer; (ii) made themselves eligible by registering for eBay managed payments.
  • The Promotion will begin on Monday, July 6, 2020 at 00:00:01 PT (12:00 AM plus one second), and will end on Friday, July 10, 2020, at 23:59:59 PT (11:59 PM plus 59 seconds).

Our Verdict

Should be a fairly easy $250 credit if you are targeted. eBay is trying to move everybody across to managed payments instead of PayPal by the end of 2020. If you receive a smaller offer I’m not sure if it makes sense to hold out for a bigger offer or not, I suspect the offers are tied to how much you actually sell with eBay (share your datapoints below).

I have been strong armed into ebay managed payments as a long time seller- I have been very unhappy about it but thought at least some of the information they are demanding makes sense for federal tax reporting so was going to do it. But when I actually went to register ebay is also demanding birth date information. This along with SS# and bank information and who knows what else (some boards say they want copies of birth certificates/drivers licenses when they cant match up provided info to info people never gave them in the first place). I contacted support to ask why this was ‘required’ and they just said for ‘verification’ purposes. But banks do not just hand out bank accounts and a SS and properly identified/linked bank account doesnt do it for ebay? Just seems like they want as much sensitive information as they can get in the name of ‘verification’. But support personnel can access user info so how long until identity theft starts happening? Have any sellers who have registered been hit with identity theft after the fact? Ebay will not say what safeguards are in place for locking down this information once the have it, just that it is encrypted. Does anyone know what if any protections they have in place? Anyone have first hand experience either as a seller forced into this or as an employee having access to user info?

I also posted the same concerns. However when they asked for Social Security number, I stopped the process and didn’t get far enough for them to ask the rest of the information. Others have said that you can substitute a tax ID number, but I wouldn’t want to give them that either. I have been an eBay seller for 20 years, and I know how bad eBay customer service is when you have a problem. It is basically nonexistent. You have to rely on the forums to figure any problem out whatsoever. There is absolutely unequivocally no way I would trust them with all this information, and I feel it is a serious overreach. One of the reasons they are doing it is that they are trying to phase out PayPal, and basically handle their own payments and get a larger portion of the pie for sales. But they are not as trustworthy as PayPal, which has actually been a decent company for us over the past 20 years. Anyway, unless we can find a workaround we will simply stop selling on eBay. It is not worth it.

Any idea how this impacts 200 transactions/$20,000? I’m guessing eBay would total Paypal and Managed Payments… but maybe they’re split?

It splits, we signed up last year and neither ebay or paypal generated 1099ks for the year despite our total sales exceeding 200 transactions and 20k combined. I think we had 1200 transactions, and 24k total for the year so split pretty evenly since we signed up around June.

ebay processing fees for this month are at 3.65% of our gross.

$50 for one account, nothing for the other two. The one that received it is my currently most active one (my oldest and one with the far most sales received nothing). Title of email was “Register for managed payments this week to continue creating new listings”

For months now, we’ve been getting the threatening e-mails that our seller account will be shut down if we don’t sign up for managed payments. I finally started the process but stopped cold in my tracks when it required SS#. Will absolutely stop selling before eBay gets that info.

I haven’t been through this particular form myself, but these kinds of things usually need SSN *or* EIN. It’s for tax reporting purposes – you have to give the same information to Paypal. If you don’t want to give out your SSN, register for a free EIN from the IRS to use for your business transactions.

I feel like Paypal is retaliating against eBay customers by shutting the phone service.

“shutting the phone service”? What are you referring to?

This whole thing by ebay has been so screwed up. They have been telling me for the last month that I must sign up for managed payments by July 15 or i won’t be able to continue selling and every time I try to sign up, it tells me I can’t. I called ebay customer service and of course they were useless.

I got the $50 offer, and when I try to sign up I get the message “We’re inviting sellers to the new managed payments program in stages. We’re sorry you can’t sign up today. But if you want to know when it’s available to you, please fill out this contact form”
