[Expired] U.S. Bank FlexPerks Travel Rewards Visa Olympics Bonus (32,100 FlexPerks Points)

This bonus has expired, view the best credit card bonuses by clicking here.

The Offer

Direct link to offer

  • U.S. Bank is offering a bonus on the Travel Rewards Visa card for the winter Olympics. Now that the Olympics are over we know the bonus is a total of 32,100. Broken down as follows:
    • 25,000 FlexPoints  after $2,000 in spend
    • 4,500 for gold medals (9 gold earning 500 each)
    • 2,000 for silver medals (8 silver earning 250 each)
    • 600 for bronze medals (6 bronze earning 100 each)

Card Details

  • Card earns at the following rates:
    • 2x FlexPoints on the category you spend the most on (at gas stations, grocery stores or airlines) and at most cell phone service providers during each billing cycle.
    • 1x FlexPoints on all purchase purchases
  • $49 annual fee waived first year

Our Verdict

We were expecting around 7,450 points based on previous years, so this is slightly lower than expected but not by much. Keep in mind that FlexPerks are worth a maximum of 1.5¢ per point now though. Also keep in mind this card is eligible for real-time rewards making these points easier to use and get that 1.5¢ value. The issue with this bonus is that it’s offered by U.S. Bank and getting approved for their cards are difficult, some people would be better off trying to get the U.S. Bank Altitude Reserve instead. As always before applying for this or any other U.S. Bank card read these things everybody should know. I will be adding this bonus to our list of the best credit card sign up bonuses.

afaik Altitude Reserve has a different underwriting team altogether or at least stricter criteria than everything else USB offers.

in other words, your app for for FlexPerks cards may be approved when an AR app would have been denied.

Just wanted to give you a DP. Yesterday I applied to both the visa flex perks (approved on the spot), and then applied for the Altitude, the application went pending. Contacted the recon line, and the system had flagged it as a duplicate application. They told me the chances for approval looked good, however, it needed to go to another dept to make sure I had a relationship with US Bank. I called today and got approved. I got very generous LOCs on both cards. Also as of today I see one hard pull on my credit from US Bank. I guess I was very lucky :). Thanks for all your help Doc!

not necessarily, just go low and slow and down the tempo, and you should be okay.

I did the last Summer Olympic bonus on this card and then closed the card before the annual fee hit. I’m wondering if I can get the bonus again this time around. Did anybody successfully get the last Winter Olympic bonus and then the last Summer Olympic bonus?

I got the last Summer Olympics bonus after closing a card from the previous Summer Olympics 4 years earlier. DH got the 20K signup bonus when he still had a card open from the previous Olympics, but he didn’t get the medals bonus. YMMV

“Existing and previous FlexPerks Travel Rewards Visa accounts do not qualify for the Visa PyeongChang Bonus FlexPoints for a similar account type” at least this time around, which would explain getting base bonus (no such language in the fine print for the 25k) but not the Visa medals bonus

Do you have to apply in branch? Or online count?

Anyone know if we are eligible if we got the cards in Summer 2016?

Got this card last time around and here’s a pro tip wrt the 12 free GoGo inflight WiFi passes. Activate the passes right away, they are good for 12 months from activation. Then when the AF posts in year 2, you can refresh your 12 passes and still have time to cancel w/out paying the AF. I tried to do this but didn’t activate my WiFi codes until 3 months after receiving the card, thinking I’d prolong the expiration date.

Was a great card for me, got a completely free rt flight to Germany with my points, then took a statement credit for the remaining 10k points I had. Thanks DoC!

I note in the terms: Existing and previous FlexPerks Travel Rewards Visa accounts do not qualify for the Visa PyeongChang Bonus FlexPoints for a similar account type.

Do you think this is enforced? I got the Flexperks Visa for the Summer Olympics in Aug 2016 and closed it back in September 2017 when the AF hit…

I notice it doesn’t say previous FlexPerks account holders. I wonder what they mean by previous FlexPerks ACCOUNTS. There are no traces of my previous FlexPerks account online so I assume I’d be opening a brand new one.

I’ve had the Olympic FP card twice now. The second time they denied me the extra points for medals because I had already owned the product once before. I think it was a mistake because my husband had the same situation and he got his medal bonus automatically.

Wait, do you have to apply between 2/5/18 and 3/10/18? I was too excited and applied immediately I saw this post and the link. Will I qualify for winter olympics promo?

Tommy
Tommy

Right below the apply button, it says “Apply for a new U.S. Bank FlexPerks® Travel Rewards Visa Card between 2/5/2018 and 3/10/2018” In the first line of this post it says “You’ll be able to apply anytime from 2/5/18 until 3/10/18.”

Got pre-approved offer with $500 spend requirement, but the offer only show 25K points, nothing about olympics. Should I wait until they update the offer or just apply to see if they would honor?

You’ll need to apply for the new card on or after 2/5/2018 per the offer…

The “Things everybody should know” page says “It’s possible to churn US Bank credit cards.” but the terms on the offer page say “Existing and previous FlexPerks Travel Rewards Visa accounts do not qualify for Bonus FlexPoints for a similar account type”

Is that not enforced?

alvinroast
alvinroast

What do you mean by “not enforced”? Were you hoping to get the bonus points for an existing or previous account? This is for new accounts only. Just open a new account and get the bonus. Don’t try to get the bonus on an old account.

I didn’t know if “previous FlexPerks Travel Rewards Visa accounts do not qualify for Bonus FlexPoints for a similar account type” means that you can’t get the bonus if you already had the card

I share the last person’s quesion or concern. If i previously had this account and no longer have it and open a new one is it going to get the bonus or are they going to reject it because “Existing and previous FlexPerks Travel Rewards Visa accounts do not qualify for the Visa PyeongChang Bonus FlexPoints for a similar account type.” It seems inartful but i wonder if they are trying to exclude and think they did exclude prior account holders? Is this one where you never ask?

I applied today and got “Your application may be subjected to further verification. You will be receiving additional information in the mail in 7-10 business days.” response. Is this normally a denial or should I call in to verify information? First application with US Bank, so not sure of their process. Waited until the 5th to apply, but did not see any additional wording during application. Thinking that is not a big deal.

Very standard with them. They do mostly manual reviews, so don’t fret.

I had the same thing happen with a Cash+ application earlier this month, and got an approval letter in the mail about 8-9 days later.

I seem to remember that for the Summer 2016 promo offer the bonus was also available for the Biz version – is that the case this time around? On the landing page you linked to, it does have a “Interested in the FlexPerks Business Edge™ Travel Rewards Visa Card? Apply online or call 866.608.8045.” note at the bottom, but I’m not sure if that means the 2018 Olympic applies to that card as well… anyone know? I want to go for the business version because I still have the personal card I got in 2016 open and seems that will exclude me from the Olympic bonus this time around if I went for the personal again…

Hmm, I have the offer for $500 in spending but there’s nothing there about the Olympics promotion. Not really sure what to do here.

Has anyone in the past applied for a pre-approved offer and successfully have them tack on the extra points for the Olympics promo?

Would be interested in this DP, too.

Same situation here, will try to do that and report back.

I called customer service and asked about the added Olympic bonus with the targeted offer of $500 spend some people have with this card. The rep informed me that any travel rewards card opened during the Olympics bonus period would get the additional bonus. Targeted or not. She said it would not differentiate offers during the bonus period. If anyone else has differing opinions/data points please let me know as I have the targeted offer. Thanks

My wife and I both got these during the summer olympics of 2016. I got the Olympic bonus and she didn’t, she only got the base bonus. We contacted them and they claim it was because she didn’t apply using the proper link. I cannot remember what link we used, so I took their word for it. I think in this case the rep may have misled you.

Instant approval.

Was looking for a way to increase my altitude reserve points before closing/retention(ing) the card in Jul. Transferring this bonus over will do just what I need.

Did you freeze IDA and ARS credit reports prior to applying? how many inquiries do you have in the last 6 months?

Michael H
Michael H

Sorry, didn’t see this until just now. IDA and ARS reports are absolutely frozen, ~12 inquiries in the last 6 months. Opened 8 cards in the past 6 months, and my most recent US Bank card was opened in September.

It’s an extra 7,100 points so far, for those following the bouncing ball.
