United has announced changes to qualifying for MileagePlus elite status for the 2027 earning year (this gives status for the 2028 and the remainder of 2027 once qualifications are met. Nothing is changing for 2026).
- Premier qualifying flights (PQF) will no longer be a thing. Only way to qualify will be Premier qualifying points (PQP). Previously you could qualify with PQF + PQP or a higher amount of just PQP. You will still need a minimum of four flights to qualify for status.
- Tier thresholds will be updated:
- Premier Silver: 6,000 PQP (currently 15 PQF and 5,000 PQP, or 6,000 PQP)
- Premier Gold: 12,000 PQP (currently 30 PQF and 10,000 PQP, or 12,000 PQP)
- Premier Platinum: 18,000 PQP (currently 45 PQF and 15,000 PQP, or 18,000 PQP)
- Premier 1k: 32,000 PQP (60 PQF and 22,000 PQP, or 28,000 PQP)
- Credit cards will continue to earn PQP and caps will be increased on the United Club cards to 32,000 PQP (previously 28,000). This matches the new requirements for Premier 1k.
- PQP boost only for credit card holders. If you have an eligible United card by December 31, 2026, and qualify for 2027 Premier status, you’ll get 5% of the PQP needed to reach your earned status level. Previously this was for all elites and not only cardholders.
- Dynamic pricing added for PlusPoints upgrades.
Our Verdict
As you can see Silver, Gold & Platinum will retain the same PQP requirements but Premier 1k will increase by 4,000 and all have the discounted PQF requirements eliminated. They are also gate keeping more benefits behind holding the credit card with only cardholders eligible for the PQP boost. United is marketing this as a simpler change. I guess that is technically correct but it’s been made simpler by removing options that made it less expensive and also increasing the base rate on Premier 1k as well.
I stopped caring about elite status a long time ago and my life is better for it. The benefits are becoming less and less frequent and requirements to reach and maintain status are becoming more and more difficult. This is just another nail in that coffin.
