Many states offer a few days/weeks during which their state sales tax is waived, typically in advance of an upcoming school year. There are typically more details on limits and eligible items so be sure to research the details of your state. We’ll list below the states we’ve seen for 2024 and we ask readers to chime in with whatever is missing.
- Connecticut – Aug. 18 – Aug. 24 (clothing and shoes under $100)
- Florida – July 29th through August 11th.(No sales tax on personal-use computers < $1,500, clothing <$100, school supplies <$50, and learning aids < $30.)
- Massachusetts – Saturday, August 10, and Sunday, August 11 (most retail items of up to $2,500 are exempt)
- Maryland – Sunday, Aug. 11 through Saturday, Aug. 17 (no sales tax on clothing and shoes under $100; backpacks up to $40 is exempt)
- Ohio – begins July 30 and ends at 11:59 p.m. on August 8 (up to $500 each item is exempt)
- Texas – August 9 through August 11 (most shoes, clothes, and school supplies under $100 are exempt; no limit)
