Our Verdict

Last time this deal was offered it wasn’t available in all locations, not sure if that will be the case this time or not. Make sure to use a credit card that earns at a high rate on drug store purchases, Drop earns points at Walgreens as well.

anyone knows the limit of this? In the past I was able to do a couple transactions , but this time I did one on Monday, and the register didn’t take the $10 off for the walgreens card when I tried to do it again today.

Yu People seem to be reporting a limit of two per account. You might want to try a different type of Walgreens gift card. See comment above from Elizabeth about some “fancy” Walgreens cards not working.

Thanks RM. It’s the walgreens card that caused the issue. I picked another Walgreens card, and it worked.

To go around limits, if you have P2/P3/ad infinitum with their own BRC, scan those instead of your BRC (provided they haven’t done this deal) and usually, it works.

Most ads show a limit of two for this deal, no limits in NM.

I’m a little late here given that there’s only a few hours left, but I successfully did 19 rounds in total, 15 of them were on one Walgreens account. I did 4 $15 cards per transaction, and did that 7.5 times this evening. Only stopped when it stopped me at 15. The other 4 I did were on my friend’s account. Didn’t want to go over the limit on his though!

And no, the birthday candles and heart Walgreens cards worked fine. Only tried the W, candles, and heart. No issues on any of them.

Didn’t work yesterday when I tried to purchase two $15 Uber cards. When I got home and checked this thread, realized my Walgreens card was one of the “fancy” ones. Went back today and chose the WG card that matches the one in the ad and it worked. Purchased four Uber $15 cards and got two $10 WG cards free.

“Purchased four Uber $15 cards and got two $10 WG cards free.” – in 1 transaction?

Data point:
My local Walgreens employees knew about the promotion and were happy to help me.
In addition to two variable-load Uber cards ($15-$200) charged to $15, the cashier grabbed a variable-load Walgreens card ($5-$500) and charged it to $10 (it was a fancy card, so non-plain cards seem to work). The $40 worth of cards rang up as $30.
They were also quite happy to let me try a second round, which worked exactly the same way.
When we tried it a third time, the total came up as $40, so I cancelled the transaction.
It thus looks like the offer is limited to twice per Walgreens Balance Rewards membership (though I might try again tomorrow and see if it resets).

DP: I tried buying two $15 Netflix cards plus two $5 Walgreens cards today, but that did NOT work. Only the first $5 Walgreens card rang up as free. So the Walgreens card has to be a $10 card, not $5 + $5. There are DPs from the December deal that $5 + $5 was working, but it does seem to anymore. https://www.doctorofcredit.com/walgreens-purchase-any-two-uber-netflix-cabelas-more-giftcards-get-free-10-walgreens-e-g-20-in-gift-cards-10-bonus/

Don’t forget to use a citi dividend

Don’t have a citi dividend card so I used my discounted Mastercards from the Albertson’s deal. Repeated several times today so Netflix is paid for the rest of the year 🙂

Works in Northern NJ and in NYC. Bought 2 $15 Netflix gift cards each time. You must find and bring a stock Walgreens to the register for them to give you the Free $10. Stores that are out of the stock Walgreens gift cards can’t honor the deal. Walgreens gift cards with a design on them wont work.

Deal confirmed to work in Durham NC. Must grab the bland Walgreens gc in order for it to work. If you get one with designs printed on it, the $10 will not come off.

I bought 2 Netflix cards at $15 each and the $10 Walgreens gc rang up for nothing. Pretty good since you can immediately unload the cards on your Netflix account and then just toss them.

My store did not have a sign and the cashiers knew nothing about this deal, but it worked anyway. Two $15 Netflix cards + $10 Walgreens card for $30. Particularly profitable in California, where cards under $10 can be cashed out.

How do you cash them out? Just go to Walgreens?

It is California law that gift cards UNDER $10 must be redeemable for cash. Most retailers know this, some don’t. It’s a pain in the ass when they don’t know. But in RM’s scenario, you’d buy the cheapest item in the store and then ask for the balance to be returned in cash. And then the cashier would look at you like whaaaaaat?

Vic veeRob As veeRob states, the card has to be under $10, so you buy a candy bar at Walgreens and ask for the balance to be returned in cash. I usually carry a print out of the following press release from the DA and show it to the manager if I get any objections. https://yoloda.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/PRESS-RELEASE-Chevron.pdf

Vic Update: cashed out two cards at my local Walgreens tonight after buying a small item with each. Cashier had no idea what to do but manager knew the drill and cashed out both cards with no difficulty.

Dang. Good to know as I am in CA sometimes. This is applicable to a Walgreens GC purchased anywhere, right? In other words they would not try to find out where it originated and refuse if it were outside CA?

Celia

I think it’s the law in CA that ANY retail gift card under $10 can be cashed out.

Matthew Celia Celia is correct. In California, it does not matter where the card was purchased, or what type it is (regular gc, merchandise credit etc.). If the balance is under $10, you can (theoretically) get your money in cash.

Compliance varies dramatically across various merchants. Most chain stores are fine, but some (e.g Domino’s) are a pain.

Other states also have gift card redemption laws, but not as generous as California’s. https://twocents.lifehacker.com/stores-in-these-states-must-give-you-cash-for-your-gift-1831488224

Would purchasing two of the same gift card work? For instance, buy two Panera cards? Or does it have to be two different cards?

Duplicate cards should be fine.

You can buy the same cards and it’ll still work. Just make sure your balance rewards card is scanned and you let them scan a new WAG gc from the rack and load $10 on it, aside from the two cards you’re buying; you will see the $10 taken off the final amount if you did it correctly.
