Our Verdict

I doubt shopping portals work for gift card purchases on Walmart.com, but can’t hurt to try.

Just as a side note, be aware that using gift cards on rideshares can disqualify potential partner earnings. I used LYFT and paid using their gift card (stored on my app) bought with an AMEX promotion. But I did not earn any Delta miles for my ride due to this form of payment. So if you go “all in” buying ride gift cards you can lose certain perks.

Do transactions on additional user cards trigger Amex offers ?

something I hear and experienced myself is that uber will jack up your fare if you are using gift card. I bought some uber gc when it’s on sale and I stored in my uber account. when I was at vegas with two other buddies, my uber price is higher (by a few bucks) than my other two friends. can anyone else confirm this?

ps. I understand sometimes uber gives out targeted promotion (ex. if you take one ride this week, next week your ride will be 20% off, etc), but the fact that my fare is higher than my other two friends it just suck

I realized the same on my trip to NYC last week.

They have figured out some way of proxying how sensitive people are to price for the rides. For example, if you have a low battery level on the phone, the app knows that, and assumes you will be desperate to go somewhere (and juice up), so you will pay a higher price.

The main defense you have against that kind of stuff is to use multiple apps/phones and check prices constantly, even if you have no plans to ride anywhere. That can help fool the algo. Also turn off your phone if you don’t book a ride so it doesn’t try to keep track if you used another service, after not booking a ride through them.
