The Offer

Direct link to offer [Update: See this comment]

  • Open a Wells Fargo Everyday Checking account and receive a bonus of $100 when you complete one of the following two things:
    • 10 debit card purchases or payments
    • Set up a qualifying direct deposit of $500 or more

The Fine Print

  • Update There’s another line in the fine print that I missed initially: “Customer must have a valid U.S. taxpayer identification number on file with Wells Fargo.” Sounds like the bonus will not work for someone who never had any relationship (e.g. checking, savings, mortgage, etc.) with Wells Fargo in the past. My gut is that this won’t be enforced, but we don’t know that for certain.
  • Valid until December 22, 2015
  • Online only at wellsfargo.com
  • Only available to new consumer checking customers, not to existing customers, including joint owners
  • Not valid for checking customers who have received any cash or cash-equivalent bonus through Wells Fargo consumer deposits in the past 12 months
  • Offer valid only on the Everyday Checking account
  • Bonus requirements must be completed within 60 days of account opening
  • Qualifying direct deposits are as follows: customer’s salary, pension, Social Security, or other regular monthly income of an accumulated $500 or more, electronically deposited by employer or outside agency
  • All bank account bonuses are treated as income/interest and as such you have to pay taxes on them
  • Bonus will be deposited into the checking account within 45 days after qualifications are met

Avoiding Fees

Monthly Fee

The Everyday Checking account comes with a $10 monthly fee. Get the fee waived with one of the following:

  • 10 debit card purchases and/or payments each statement cycle from this checking account, OR
  • Direct deposits totaling $500 or more each statement cycle, OR
  • Maintain a $1,500 minimum daily balance, OR
  • Link checking account to a Wells Fargo Campus ATM or Campus Debit Card

Early Account Termination Fee

In the past, there was always an early account termination fee of $25 if you close your account within six months of opening. It’s being reported (1, 2) that they may have dropped this fee; if true, you can close right after the bonus posts.

Our Verdict

This offer has been around before; the good part about this time is that it’s publicly available.

People that aren’t usually interested in bank bonuses are often interested in bonuses offered by Wells Fargo because they don’t like approving consumers for credit cards unless they also have a banking relationship. Some good credit cards offered by Wells Fargo:

Not everyone will find $100 bonuses worthwhile, and there’s also a small chance that a higher bonus will come around like we had in the past. However, if you are on the fence for a Wells Fargo credit card, this is an excellent way to take care of the relationship obstacle and net $100 along the way.

Anyone familiar with Wells Fargo matching offers? I just signed up for an Everyday Checking account last week and was curious if they will match this offer?

Jim

Same here, Adam. I opened one online last week. The branch near me wants to give me the bonus, but they can’t find a promo code to add to the account. Anyone have any idea what the promo code is. I can’t seem to find it on the wells site (and neither could the guy at my branch).

Odds are they won’t budge. They’re a very stingy bank who really isn’t into providing incentive to use their products. All you have to do is look at what they do and don’t offer. This bonus is probably in their eyes like an early christmas and as someone who’s had a bank account with them for 20 years even this surprises me.

I only use them as a B&M option for the very few times a year (if at all) I’d need assistance I couldn’t get from an online bank.

Oh, I have no illusions. From one visit it is clear their B and M operation is incompetent at best, but they are nice enough. I figure I’ll find someone who can add the bonus. If not, I was just signing up for the relationship…

You know what they say, friends with bonuses can never last.

The URLs in the button is https://www.wellsfargo.com/wf/product/apply?prodSet=APP2K&prodCode=CHK-RC&mktoffer=HPP100&destination=DMOC&account_type=CHK

I tried to get the offer in the branch with the code in the URLs (hpp100) they said it was online only. I just went ahead n did it online.

Thanks Amy. That link seems to have worked.

@Chuck: seems this offer might not be dead after all.

I’ll update if/when they approve my account application.

Amy/Dave B,

When you applied, was there an option to enter promotional code? if not, beware they might not honor. If you manage to enter promotional code, then for safer side take a screen shot of the promotion code you entered before submitting the application, so you can talk to them if promotion is not applied…

Good Luck!

@Vijay: Yes, clicking on that link took me to a page where it had two blanks; zip code and offer code. The offer code was pre-filled. When I entered my zip code it seemed to “approve” this code/zip code combination, and gave me a button to open one of these everyday checking accounts.

And yes, I did take screenshots of this, just in case. I’ll report in as developments occur.

I signed up a month ago, actually emailed them yesterday because I saw this offer on their website. They messaged me back this morning and said they would match it.

I’ve never looked at Wells Fargo credit cards before but I did notice the cash back card offers 5% at grocery stores for 6 months. Does it ever come with a sign up bonus?

Nicholas
Nicholas

Yes it does, but it may only be targeted to WF checking customers. After setting up a WF checking account and letting it collect direct deposits for a couple of months, I received a mailing for the 5% card that included 10k points on $1k spend in 3 months.

I opened a Wells Fargo savings account with $300 from a cc. The minimum monthly balance is $300 to avoid a fee. A few hours later I was approved for the Wells Fargo Cashback card.

Where are you seeing the early closure fee? After looking for one among their terms,
I asked a chat rep, and was told there isn’t one.

I was only able to fund my WF checking account with $50 via credit card. See: http://i.imgur.com/FzGAHyF.png

Same here. $50 max on a credit card, not $500.

As it turns out, this offer has regional restrictions. I cannot apply online or via phone for this..

Is this the best WF checking offer? I do want to get the WF 5% CC as well, but heard have to be WF customer first.

Ted

Any note on whether the debit card transactions can be a pin transaction?

physixfan

“There is an early account termination fee of $25” Where do you see it?

chris

venmo and paypal transfers are considered direct deposit by bofa, anyone know if either of these would qualify as direct deposit for wf to meet the bonus requirement?

Charly Chang

Is WF sensitive to MO deposit? There is a branch right next to my home so it is convenient and I am thinking about keeping the account instead of churning. But how sensitive is it w.r.t. MOs? I am talking about couple thousands in a months, nothing crazy.

Does WF allow PC from AF cards down to No AF like the Wells Fargo Cash Back Visa? To get a better signup bonus, but keep relationship going afterwards without AF.

Vijay

Just Chatted with an chat rep. and got confirmation that the checking account can be closed anytime..

“Customer must have a valid U.S. taxpayer identification number on file with Wells Fargo.”

What’s does the “..on file with Wells Fargo” mean?

Dave_B

The direct link to offer doesn’t seem to be working. Did this offer die early, or is there some other way to get to it?

Is there some offer code associated with this? Can an account be opened in a branch with this bonus attached?

Fred
Fred

Not working here either.
