What’s Going On With The American Express Airline Incident Credits & MPX?

Since approximately November 23rd/24th people have been reporting that they haven’t received a credit for certain purchases that normally trigger the American Express Platinum $200/Premier Rewards Gold airline incidental credit (e.g MPX purchases ).

This has been an issue pointed on on both /r/churning (in various different threads and multiple times in the daily discussion threads) & on Flyertalk. A few readers have asked what’s going on and if American Express has closed this loophole down or not. Something similar happened last year, although there is a slight difference with the delay this year.

People have had other charges reimbursed since 23rd/24th (including gift card purchases), see these data points:

Honestly it’s too early to say definitively what is going on. I’m somewhat reassured by something similar happening last year, but it is strange other purchases are triggering the offer. At the moment the best advice is to just sit tight and hope for the best.

As always, feel free to share your theories and datapoints in the comments below.

I made an MPX purchase on 1/4 but has yet to get the reimbursement. usually it took a day or two after posting but nothing so far. It does show as airline category in details and i do have it set up as amex.

I guess I just keep waiting as i cant go on chat and ask amex wheres my credit???

sirtheta

MPX has been dead for a while now; you’ll have to try another method of redemption. Check https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/american-express-membership-rewards-410/

Mpx I meant.

No it sounds like MPX does not work with either PRG or Platinum

Does it at least still count as an airline category?

Is it not working for AmEx PRG either?

Yes, it is.

Are you answering the negative or the question?

I’m saying it worked with PRG on United Gift registry.

United Gift registry has worked, it is the MPX that is not working

Southwest works, AA works, United gift registry works, delta works, mpx does not work.

This is reading Flyertalk over the last week

With aa- could you just buy a gift card through their website? We fly them all the time…. thank you!

How does the registry work? Can you only use it for flight tickets?

Yup, only tickets. United gift registry can’t be used to pay the taxes on a miles ticket.

Still no concensus on what works and what doesn’t? My family member just received his card and I told him to wait before committing to any airline.

I logged into my account and chatted with a rep and told them I haven’t been reimbursed for “charges” on my card. He helped me out immediately. Three gift cards of $100 reimbursed! Try chatting with someone

The travel reimbursement for Platinum is only $200 a year.. how’d you get 3 gift cards for $100 each?

Were these for MPX Amazon GC’s? Did they ask for details? I’d be concerned trying to defend the transaction showing as “MPX AMAZON.COM” as being eligible for the refund…

I hope you didnt say out loud what charges, if you did and it comes under their scanner you will be locked out of 100K MR eventually.

As a DP, I was unable to use Amex BCE cashback from 11/28 to 11/30. My guess is this is a temporary issue with the rewards/reimbursement platform.

For the e gift card at southwest. Does it need it to be purchased from sw website for the credit to be triggered?

For the gift registry option (which seems to be working), do you have to use the funds for tickets or can you go through the shopping portal? I do see the gift card shop is currently not available, hopefully that will change.

Can’t go through shopping portal. Only works on united.com
