The Offer
- Receive a $100 checking bonus when you open a Rewards, Interest or High Rate checking account with Landmark Credit Union with the promotional code “DEC100”. You also need to enroll in eStatements and have a recurring monthly direct deposit of at least $250
The Fine Print
- Direct deposit is defined as a minimum of $250 per month in ACH deposits, which may include payroll pension or government benefit payments such as social security.
- Landmark will review your account within 60 days of account opening and deposit the $100 cash bonus within two weeks if the requirements have been met
- All bank account bonuses are treated as income/interest and as such you have to pay taxes on them
Avoiding Fees
None of the landmark checking accounts come with a monthly fee, you must keep them open for a minimum of six months to avoid an early account termination fee of $100 though. The high rate checking account comes with an APR of 7.5% on the first $500 in balances, but you need a direct deposit of at least $250 per month to trigger this higher rate. All balances over $500 earn only 0.2%.
Our Verdict
This would be an OK bonus, but we don’t know whether it’s a hard or soft pull to open and what will trigger the direct deposit requirement. If you’ve done this before or know the answers to either of those two questions, please let us know in the comments below.
I personally wouldn’t bother with the account that earns an APR of 7.5% because that also requires a direct deposit and you can only have $500 in funds in there at that rate. You’d be better off going with a different rewards checking account instead, they’ll earn slightly less but $500 isn’t really worth bothering with.
We haven’t added this to our best checking bonus list because of the regional restrictions, but it is viewable in the state specific list.
