with all 4k tvs now being “smart”, what’s the point of having a firestick? i get 1080p tvs since a lot of those were purchased 2008-2015 before smart tvs were commonplace, but i don’t see why you’d need a 4k one.

Mfrs stop supporting various models that still work fine, but have old/outdated apps that no longer work. Also, TVs tend to gimp on the built-in processor and they don’t perform all that well. A discrete device is cheap and easy, and you can take it with you e.g. if you travel and stay in hotels and what not.
