[YMMV] BJ’s Wholesale Gift Card Promotion

Reader Jason sent in a tip that BJ’s clubs Vanilla gift cards are ringing up currently with no fees. From what Jason told us, it sounds like the key is to buy the Vanilla card type. Stacks nicely with the Freedom and Discover Q4 category of Wholesale Clubs – this is a good way of maximizing those.

Another tip Jason mentioned is that BJ’s coupons can sometimes work on gift cards, so keep an eye out if you ever get those, they likely send them out to members.

Again these offers may or may not work for you, but if you’re near a BJ’s today and want to give it a shot, it’s good to know.

It has been months, went stores in both PA and NJ, no fee either cashier or self checkout

Kelly

+1 I can confirm this has been for months in GA as well.

NJ, PA, NC. No issues. nothing new and def. a glitch because not all are ringing up fee free.

Been hitting BJ’S in the past few months for VGC and never got any fee free ones. In MA.

Yes, this has been going on since at least this post (see comments), when I took advantage of it: https://www.doctorofcredit.com/bjs-wholesale-club-open-to-everybody-without-a-membership-until-november-4th-no-fee-commitment/

If you follow r/churning on reddit this has been happening for months now. This will most likely die very soon. Especially because of how mainstream its becoming.

Remember the days when you used to not post about MS deals until after it died? Like the Toys R Us no fee gift cards, the roomi pay glitch, etc. No idea why this one wasn’t held like those.

William Charles

We constantly post MS deals, we thought this was publicly advertised so that’s why we posted. Then we even changed the title and the text to try and make it more discreet.

what’s the largest denomination allowed for reloading visa/MasterCard gift card at BJ’s?

It was active during their no membership promo. Was a nice way to meet the CF cats.

What does “CF cats” mean?

Some retarded manager at my local BJ’s disallowed loading more than $200 to gift cards due to “fraud concerns”.
Literally. $200 fraud is fine (you can do it as many times as you wish), $500 is a no go.

Where you located? Same thing happened to me.

It’s Linden, NJ

Avi

Is it hard-coded? My BJ’s has a self checkout.

Andrey
Andrey

Mine too, will try it next time. How does it work, prompt you to enter amount on the dial pad?

Avi
Avi

Yes, you just enter the amount.

Bob Roberts

Normally when I see cashiers enter amounts they have to enter cents (so $500 is 50000). Do you have to do that at self-checkout?

Avi
Avi

Probably, but I don’t remember. It’ll be very obvious once you’re doing it.

Andrey
Andrey

Yes. You will see it as the GC value updates on the screen.

That whole “fraud” concern is total garbage; if someone was trying to commit fraud by purchasing a VGC, they would not purchase it at a place that required you to have a membership card that you scan prior to making a purchase…

Andrey

Exactly, and things like that make me wonder how thinking process is organized in these, well, individuals. I mean, really, what is going on inside their heads?

And if you’re money laundering, you’re going to pay with cash, not a credit card.

When you use that word, hopefully they wont let you buy any ya cunt.

They took all the $500 variable down at my location, now there’s nothing but $200 max.

Hi. In what town is that?

I have been doing this for the past two months in OH area. I have tried three BJ’s and all three of them have no fee Vanillas.

Dan

When people are saying variable load, are they talking about one vanilla? At my BJ’s there is vanilla visa up to $200 and variable load one vanilla visa for $20-$500

Evan

Funny, I bought a $500 Vanilla this afternoon at BJ’s and did not notice that I was not charged the fee until I read this post. I can confirm no fee added on my receipt.

I think I read somewhere if you leave the money in then the funds get stolen. Is that common?
Or do people cash out pretty soon? In that case where do you cash them?
Walmart is not allowing any more right?

Mimi
Mimi

it’s best to liquidate VGCs because the risk of getting funds stolen from these are very high. It has been said by a lot of MSers to liquidate ASAP, if possible no later than 48 hrs. I drain mine to my prepaid cards and/or MOs and as last resort, pay bills.

Gerald
Gerald

I’ve never had any problems with Visa, whether Vanilla or MetaBank. I’ve had this problem with MasterCard.

Can I cash this out into a money order at Walmart? I haven’t done any gift card MS since Serve closed my account.

And I just got a $5 off $50 coupon in my email, which I’m guessing may work given what you say above.

iahphx

I do not believe you can use these Vanilla GCs at Walmart. If you want a MO, you’ll have to find a supermarket to issue it.

Mimi
Mimi

NO, vanillas won’t drain when buying MOs at WM but if you have Serve/BB card, they drain w/o even asking for PIN….maybe YMMV but there’s a lot of DPs online about this going on for months now so you can always try if you have those axp prepaids.

It’s been a great MS route with fee free GC liquidated for free, what else can one ask for?

I really don’t understand the appeal of these warehouse clubs — and would never shop there on a normal basis — but I gamed a free membership earlier this year to take advantage of a Discover category bonus to buy gift cards. I’ve since bought a handful of grocery items when they’ve sent me coupon books for things like “$5 off bakery”, but I still find the store nearly worthless EXCEPT for gift cards. Thanks to an AMEX Offer, my AMEX Blue Biz card pays 3x as BJs, and I go in and I use the self-service checkout (best thing about the whole store!) whenever BJs sends me a coupon for $5 (or more) off my next purchase. No problem using these for gift cards. In fact, they emailed me a new coupon today. The coupon has my member number on it and says “Limit One Coupon Per Member.” I assume if I printed a second coupon to use on a second purchase, it wouldn’t scan?
