The Fine Print

  • Valid 10/4/15 – 10/10/15
  • Limit 1 per household
  • Staples doesn’t sell these online so you’ll have to buy this in-store

Our Verdict

If you buy two $200 Mastercard gift cards or one $200 and one $100, the $20 Staples gift card offsets the purchase fees of $14 or $13 respectively.

Typically, this offer would only be really worthwhile for someone who has an INK card. However, with the Discover Apple Pay promo going on, this offer makes sense for anyone with a Discover card as well since Staples accepts Apple Pay. Of course, we don’t know for sure that gift cards will work for the Discover promo, but we are hopeful about that.

What are the chances that staples will still carry $100 or $200 MasterCard gift cards by day 5 of the promotional period? Anybody have any success finding $100 or $200 gift cards late into the week on previous visa/mastercard staples gift card promotions?

I think my manager pulls all the gift cards. They usually have about 100 or so on the rack. They were all gone once the promo began. Only $50 ones left no one will buy. They get tired of dealing with Ink people. Last time I asked and she reluctantly pulled some she admitted she stashed in the office.

Only $50 Mastercards was definitely the case this week at the three Staples I tried in Manhattan. Perhaps this removal of the higher value cards by management is a common practice, although I’m not familiar with how they’re “normally” stocked. There were plenty of Amex and Visa cards in a variety of denominations.

Be careful. I bought these on Sunday, and they aren’t still activated. I talked to the manager, and he contacted somewhere, and they told me it’ll get activated soon without giving me any time frame. I’m going back to see if I can get refund.
Mastercards are just pain in the ass with these activations.
