Discover 10% Bonus with Apple Pay, $2,000 Profit per Discover Card!

Discover announced today that starting September 16, cardmembers will be able to add their Discover cards to Apple Pay. As part of the rollout, they are making an amazing offer.

The Offer

Direct Link

  • Use your Discover cashback card with Apple Pay and get a 10% cashback bonus for up to $10,000 of in-store purchases.
  • Use your Discover it Miles, Miles and Escape with Apple Pay and earn an extra 10 miles per dollar on up to $10,000 of in-store purchases.

This offer is available from September 16 until years end. You can get 10% or 10-miles on up to $10,000 in purchases over those 3 & 1/2 months.

The Fine Print

  • In-store purchases only
  • In stores, Apple Pay works with iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus and Apple Watch, as well as iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus, upon availability.

Our Verdict

Wow! Wow! Not much more to say.

In the past, we’ve verified that ALL Discover cashback will be doubled at years end (for those enrolled in the double cashback offer), even for things like referral bonuses and Deals. It’s fair to assume this 10% bonus will be doubled as well.

This means you can get $2,000 cashback on $10,000 in spend. You may think it’s hard to do $10,000 in spend, but it’s not. Walgreens and Duane Reade accept Apple Pay and they sell $500 Visa gift cards. And there are probably some other good options as well. Let us know other ideas in the comments.

I may buy an iPhone to take advantage of this offer (ATT Access perhaps?). Or you can try asking a friend to use their phone. It could also make sense to apply for another Discover card in order to take advantage of this offer as it would be the equivalent of a $2,100 signup bonus; $2,000 from the promo + $100 from the initial signup via referral.

I cant seem to find 100 discover referral or signup bonus. Anyone care to share? Thx!

  2. Dan says:

Wow indeed. Discover is going all out. First the doubled cashback and now this.

So whats the cheapest iPhone that is capable of ApplePay? Im an Android faithful but would not hesitate to pick up a cheap iPhone to utilize this

  3. physixfan says:

Are you sure it is (1%+10%)*2=22% or 1%*(1+10%)*2=2.2%?
The words are not clear actually…

  4. Dan says:

    Is this real life?

  5. Bob says:

I am not quite sure I understand this correctly, say typical cashback of using Discover in store is 1%, then with this bonus, it will be 11%, not 1.1%? For me, I really think 1.1% makes more sense, but I really hope it is 11%, lol.

  6. Tony says:

Is apple pay acceptable for paying VGC at Walgreens?

  7. Paul says:

have not yet signed up for the double promotion. But this seems yummy. Is it still possible?

  8. Vinh says:

I’m not counting my chickens before they hatch. I’ll take the 10%, and if they give me an extra 10%, then I’ll be much happier.

  9. Parkerthon says:

Funny story, Android user here since it’s inception and I was planning to switch to iOS for the first time with the 6s because I’m sick of the lack of support android handset makers give their phones after a year is up. Problem is I now have to buy VGC’s one at a time from Walgreens with their stupid limits. If only CVS gave in and took Apple Pay, this would be easy.

    • Fiby says:

So you have been able to make purchases at Walgreens with Apple Pay? I’ve never tried buying vgc from Walgreens, I don’t know how cc friendly they are. Though I recognize that this is pretty YMMV store to store.

      • Parkerthon says:

Never with ApplePay, but with Amex card yes. They recently started being strict about one VGC per purchase, per person, per day. Unlike CVS, they don’t have a tracking system that scans your ID and enforces the limit. I have heard Walgreens in different areas have gone cash only though for VGC’s, so best to test before you leap. Sadly, something like this may catch their attention with the sudden spike in volume and ApplePay transactions. Let’s hope it doesn’t get shut down.

  10. David says:

Does anyone know if I can refer myself for a second Discover It card?

  11. meg says:

just got off the phone with discover.. it doesn’t look like you can get the referral credit AND the double cash back – that’s what i was told after a long “research” hold anyway.

  12. Ryan says:

Is this automatic or do we need to sign up for it?

  13. W D says:

For all practical purposes- is this 20% cash back for general spend?

  14. brteacher says:

So, I can add two Discover cards to Apple Pay? This sounds like a great reason to get a Miles card to go with my It.

  15. Chris says:

Does the apple watch by itself with no phone or data work with apple pay? I was thinking of just paying $350 for one of those to take advantage of this. If that works, that seems to be the cheapest option for non iphone users.

    Thanks for any info

  16. HoKo says:

So it sounds like regular Discover It cards are not eligible?

    • Why did you get that impression?

      • HoKo says:

Well perhaps I’m just getting confused by Discover’s naming conventions but the language says “Use your Discover it Miles, Miles and Escape with Apple Pay”

I have a regular Discover it card that earns 5% cashback on rotating quarterly categories and 1% cashback on everything else – isn’t this product just called the “Discover It” card – which is different from the “Discover It Miles” which earns “1.5x Miles for every dollar you spend on purchases.”

The promo language mentions the Discover It Miles but not just the plain old Discover It, right?

        • Those cards earn miles, the regular Discover cards earn cash back and it also says:

“cardmembers who pay with their Discover card using Apple Pay will automatically earn an extra 10% Cashback Bonus on up to $10,000 of in-store purchases”

Hope that clears it up for you!

  17. Wwllmm says:

Has anyone ever confirmably bought a $500 VGC using Apple Pay?

  18. Steve says:

When Will the 10% cb form the Apple pay promo post? On each statement? Or similar to the other promo and it’ll only post once the promo is over.. ..?

  19. Nick says:

So does anyone know any work around to use apple pay if you us an android? Does apple pay work on ipod touch? Maybe i can use that while using my android phone as a hotspot for it?

    • James says:

Wouldn’t work with an iPod touch since it lacks NFC and also can’t connect to an Apple Watch. For those with a 5S, I believe you can get Apple Pay if you purchase an Apple Watch since Apple Watch has an NFC chip and can link to the 5S. Correct me if I’m wrong. This is more expensive, obviously, than upgrading to a 6 but worth mentioning, nonetheless.

  20. Steve says:

Can I use a dead (bad ESN) iPhone for this? I’ll get WiFi from my mobile Hotspot.

  21. Dave C says:

So, the Apple Pay 10% bathtub 12/31, but the double everything is 365 days after sign up, correct?

    • Dave C says:

      Is through* not “bathtub” Haha.

      • W D says:

Mostly yes, for me it was 365 days beginning the next quarter after enrolling, so from 7/1 to 7/1 despite signing up in June.. implications being if you wait til October (q4) you might not have doublecash kick in until necxt quarter- which is when Apple Pay promotion ends

  22. bellmike says:

Can multiple Discover Cards be loaded onto ONE capable iPhone? We only have 1 iPhone 6 but have 3 Discover card holders. Please only answer if you know the answer to be one per phone or more than one per phone (and what that number is).

And by the way, this website ROCKS!

  23. Suzy says:

Might help some: where apple pay is accepted.

  24. Chris says:

Does anyone have any ideas of the cheapest way possible to obtain an iphone for the next 3 months at the lowest cost. I don’t have one or want to pay for one in the future, but I want it for this 🙂 I just want to be able to sell it when this is over and recoup as much money as possible.

    Thanks for your ideas!

  25. Matt27 says:

This puts me in an interesting position because I have an iPhone contract renewal coming up on October 9 and I’m hoping by then the new iPhones will be released. I was gonna wait to get a new iPhone until then but now I’m wondering if by mid October there’s a possibility that this offer will be diminishing if people hit it hard. Thoughts?

Also, when you are approved for a new Discover it card (I just was a few weeks ago) you’re automatically enrolled in the double cash back promotion, correct?

  26. VicGr1 says:

Do I need Data service plan (or any service plan at all) for Applay pay to work?
Can I have iPhone w/o SIM card?

  27. Suzy says:

Are you able to add your Discover card to your Apple Pay account? Received error msg

    • Suzy says:

Do we have to wait till Sept 16 to add the card? Trying with the Discover it and I notice Discover is not listed as a supported bank. Guessing that will change on the 16th

  28. David says:

Does the old Discover card (not the Discover It, nor the Discover It miles), also receive the 10% with Apple Pay?

  29. mike says:

Can we buy moneypak and unload those to Serve or Redbird?

  30. alen says:

is there a referral link for MILES card??
if not can i apply for the second IT card?? my first one is 8 years old………

  31. Rich says:

When checking my status page for referrals, what does the column “opened” referr to? I thought it meant the number of card accounts successfully opened, but I sent a referral to my girlfriend’s email, which she opened and applied for the IT card. She was approved, but on my status page, it still has a 0 for “opened” but does show the click.

  32. Bineesh says:

Tried Walgreens at Long Beach – they have changed their policy that all VGC’s should be purchased with cash. There goes one good/easy option here. Anyone know any other Walgreen in LA/Orange County accepting Apple Pay for VGC?

  33. Jason says:

If anyone wants to split their referral bonus with me, I’m glad to apply today. antrim111 at gmail

  34. Paul says:

Anyone able to add their Discover card to Apple Pay yet? Mine still saying “issuer does not support”

  35. Christine says:

Do we need to enroll for this offer or is it automatically added onto our card?

  36. Nikunj says:

    Excluding gift cards 🙁

The 10% discount excludes gift cards. This is clearly mentioned when you select the Discover card in the Wallet app ( after adding it, of course ) on your iPhone 6. Please update this article and also let us know if you have other alternative strategies to take maximum advantage of the 10% discount.

  43. Pedro says:

I will test today if adding discover cards for me and spouse on the same iphone work with Apple Pay. Shouldn’t be a problem.
Apply for the discover promotion I make $50 when you apply, and so do you.

  44. autum says:

We did enjoy Discover until it became a headache. Had to fight on the bonus cashback. They almost didn’t give it to us until I started complaining. They mentioned they’re not responsible for categorizing stores and it’s the stores fault. They were running a deal where if you buy things from a hardware store you’d get the 5%. Well bought something from Ace Hardware online and Discover didn’t honor that blaming the store. It took months after of inactivity with the card before they decided to give me the bonus. Didn’t want to go through with that again so I stopped using Discover. Glad it works out for some.

  45. Brad Meyer says:

    Anybody gotten any bonuses yet?

    • Parkerthon says:

Still no word. We’re very close though. Some people that managed to get charges in Sept 16th/17th just before their statements closed will be reporting data points in next couple days. Fingers crossed.

      • Brad Meyer says:

Speaking of which, my statement did close on the 16th. No bonuses. Perhaps by statement that closes on the 26th will show something else?

My statement just came out and I hadn’t yet received any of my 10% apple pay purchases. none were gift cards so no reason to hold them back. I sent an email this am to discover asking when they are supposed to post the 10%. did anyone find out?

Anybody having trouble getting the 10% CB when your Discover statement closes? I’ve had 2 close since this promo started – first one didn’t have any Apple 10% bonus CB and second had $0.56 when I was owed $4+. They claim that cash back takes a few cycles to post but feels like I’m not getting my full bonus here. And didn’t buy any gift cards in the purchases.
