The Offer

- Purchase Visa gift cards at Giant or Stop&Shop stores and receive 2x gas points on the purchase.
Visa/Mastercard gift cards usually don’t earn gas points at all. Occasionally, they’ll run a promo offering points on them and even bonusing the purchase with extra points. This time, it’s double points on Visa gift card purchases. As an example, if you buy one $500 Visa gift card you’ll get 1000 points, worth $1.00 off each gallon of gas, up to 35 gallons or a $35 value.
The Fine Print
- Offer valid from 10/16/15 – 10/22/15
- Must use Stop&Shop/Giant rewards card in order to get the points (and to redeem them as well)
- Be sure to check out your own local store’s ad to make sure that they are running this offer and that the details are the same
Our Verdict
This is a great promo which comes a number of times per year. The 4x offers are better, but the 2x are pretty good too. It’s particularly useful since buying Visa gift cards at supermarkets can really be a profitable venture in any event, by using a card that earns bonus points at supermarkets, such as Amex Blue Cash, Amex Everyday and so many more. See Best Credit Card For Grocery Store Purchases.
Note that you can only do one $500 card per transaction without needing an override. (Asking to split each card into a separate transaction works.) If you’re doing higher than $2,000, you need to do it at customer service. Max $5000 per day. They usually copy down your driver’s license number on large gift card purchases.
Gas Points Details
Basic Details: Every 100 points gets you 10¢ off per gallon at Shell, up to 35 gallons. If you have 1000 points, you’ll get $1 off. If you have 2200 points, you’ll get $2.20 off per gallon.Â
- Max discount in some areas is $2.20. In other areas there is no max.
- You have 30 days to use the points. The day of purchase is Day #1.
- Points can only be used at partner Shell stations. You can redeem the points in a different area from where you got the points, but only if that Shell station is a partner. Check out the gas locator for Stop & Shop and for Giant for exact listings of which Shell stations are included.
- See the FAQ for more details. Some of the details vary by area and store.
- Points usually are available immediately, but I’ve had on occasion where it took a day until they showed up and were usable.
Since gas prices currently average at around $2.20 per gallon, your gas will be free or almost free. Pro tip: Use a Shell gift card  and you’ll usually get the cash price. (Those who are good at math will realize why it’s especially worthwhile to get the lower cash price when using fuel points.)

My local S&S gas stations are all under $2.20 a gallon. Does this mean free gas, or this a minimum that they charge?
Note that points are redeemed in chunks of 100 (i.e. 10 cents off at a time), and even if the price of gas is below $2.20 the Shell station may have a minimum.
On my last redemption (at an independently-owned Shell station) gas was $2.139, 2200 points were redeemed, and the pump still charged me $0.109/gal
No idea yet if this is station-specific, regional, or what.
Thanks, Doc! I have some new CC’s to do some spend on!
I just bought $1K of VGC’s. I also noticed in the flyer there is a cheap item that can get you 400 more gas points. Buy six ice tea @ $1.99 each and get 400 gas points. Usually I’ll buy $5K max GC’s but now that REDbird flew the coop, I need to buy a money order. I’ve never done money orders and my Serves won’t arrive for @ least another week. Will be heading to WM and see how it goes?
Good luck with that. My local WMT won’t accept GCs as payment for MOs.
Does the wm have a money center
The WM does have a money center but it states you must go to the CS for a money order. Hopefully I can use the money center for Serve when I get them?
I have been loading serve for about 6 months at the money center it’s really easy to use
@DavidNJ: Why do you need to spend $12 to get 40 cents of gas price, when you can spend $5.95 and get $1 off gas price. Don’t fall for those gimmicks unless that it the brand of tea you use and you need it! Just my 2 c…
@newbie008 ….There are only so many GC’s that I can buy and liquidate. I drink tea, like many other people do. Bottom line is it’s an additional option to get free gas or free tea.
