American Express Has Discontinued The Gold Card (Not PRG)

We heard from a new source a few weeks ago that American Express would be discontinuing the Gold charge card, we didn’t originally post as the card wasn’t offering any sign up bonus and it isn’t worth signing up for. It looks like that information is true and the Gold card has been discontinued, at the moment you just get a loading circle when you go to dedicated page for that card  (update before posting, it’s now actually redirecting to the PRG card).

It should be noted that the American Express Premier Rewards Gold Card is still available for sign up (highest current bonus is a total of 65,000 points or 50,000 points for $2,000 in spend). At this stage it isn’t clear what will happen to existing regular gold cardholders.

  1. Sam says:

I wonder if this means Amex will give out free PRG cards to Platinum holders now since you could add 99 gold cards…

  2. Mark O says:

The gold card was a terrible product but I do currently have one because of the 25k sign up

  3. NinjaX says:

nooooooooooooo… i didnt get the bonus for that CC yet. gawd dammit dude…

  4. Josh says:

    FFS

I never got that card and was planning on getting it if I needed to downgrade one of my plats. Super annoyed.

  5. Eric says:

The Ameriprise Gold Card is still available for 25k/$1k spend if you need a quick chunk of MR. Not sure for how long though.

Link shows PRG but when clicking through it’s the regular Gold.

  6. Darv says:

Any word on the Ameriprise Gold?

  7. DH7 says:

It looks like the page you linked is back up (for me at least)

  8. Gerald says:

Not to be confused with the Business Gold, right?

  9. Tom says:

I have an offer for 25k points when I spend $1.5k in the first 3 months for the Amex Gold card, and the link still works. Is this worth the signup, or are they just going to convert it to the Amex PRG card, and can’t get the bonus again?

  10. DGS says:

Amex should spiff the rewards on the Green Card to make it more competitive with CSP. $95 is too much to pay for a card with such limited rewards. The should bring back Zync as their entry level charge Card.

  11. Saf says:

Yeah, haven’t been seeing bonuses on this card for a few months now.

Just applied for Ameriprise version as it probably won’t go above 25k anyways.

Thanks for the post! Didn’t know the Gold was going away.

Really didn’t want to apply as I have a few inquiries and I wanted at least another Barclay Card, but guess I’ll just take it a little easy for the next 6 months…

  12. Vic says:

Went a head and was approved for Gold for Ameriprise.

Also got an OBC, since there’s HP anyway.

  13. Colin Stuart says:

    Thank goodness. this card sucked.

  14. James C. says:

The Amex Gold card is so iconic, I’m surprised they didn’t change the terms to make it more popular, rather than kill it.

  15. MarcoPolo says:

Should I apply for this or Chase Ink?

  16. Elizabeth says:

I got this card last year when they had a sign up bonus of about 40K points and then another 25k after spending $2500 between July and October of this year. Any idea if I’ll still have a chance to earn those 25k points on another card if they’re discontinuing this one?

    • DGS says:

There are some 25,000 links out there for the Green Card. You might have to dig to find one!

      • Elizabeth says:

Thanks, what I meant though is any chance Amex would honor the deal they had offered me on another card I already have with them?

  17. DGS says:

Does this mean that Lizzy Gardiners dress might be worth more? 😉
