Our Verdict

Chili’s gift cards can be sold for 80% of face value according to Giftcard Wiki. Let’s look at the profit break down if you purchased a $30 gift card:

  • Purchase $30 gift card
  • Receive $10 statement credit
  • Resell for 80% of face value (+$24)

You’re basically making $4 profit per card, plus whatever credit card points you’d normally earn. If you can only purchase in denominations of $25/$50 and can’t split tender then you’d only be breaking even before taking into account credit card points.

Calling the closest Chili’s in the one’s area could answer the question about the $ amounts that are sold directly at the restaurant. Maybe because at retailers the amounts are fixed, there is confusion about the $ values sold.

I don’t sell GCs so this would have to be an opportunity to have a meal at Chili’s that makes sense for me. My son used to eat there once a month until his friends wanted to go other places. But, one thing could be kept in mind for vets: The Veterans Day meal which is free for the vet. If one takes the family out for this occasion, or gets together with other vets, one has the way to cover the tab in November by buying the card before the Amex deadline. Just a thought….

No issues going up to the takeout counter and purchasing multiple $30 GCs in multiple transactions. I only did 3 but will go back for 7 more tomorrow. 😉 The cards are variable load – you choose.

One method for dealing with the $30 threshhold, assuming that you actually want to eat a meal at Chili’s: Order right at $30 worth of food, and buy a $25 gift card with a separate card. Use the gift card purchase to leave the tip, putting you right over $30 on that purchase as well.

You can sell the gift card, and get another $4 back, so essentially a $30 meal for $16. Not a bad deal. And Chili’s is pretty decent, as far as chains go.
