Check Your Alaska Accounts, You Might Have A Bonus 10,000 Miles From Virgin America

There are a number of people reporting that they have received an additional 10,000 miles in their Alaska airlines account. It’s listed as follows:

  • SPECIAL SERVICES ELEVATE MEMBER OTO 10K BONUS.

Obviously this has something to do with Virgin American, but I’m not exactly sure what the connection is as people with & without status have reported receiving it, as have people with and without various credit cards. Feel free to speculate on what the miles are for in the comments below. It could be from the Virgin America wine promotion, but it’s weird nobody has reported getting 5,000 points. Definitely not the wine offer, my guess is that these points were added in error and will be clawed back at some stage.

  1. F says:

Looks like I got it… I don’t have a Virgin account, have never flown an Alaska flight, and don’t have an Alaska or Virgin CC. Not complaining though…

  2. Bodiddely says:

I just noticed this when refreshing Award Wallet and was baffled (though pleasantly surprised). I have no status with AS or Virgin. Only CC is a BofA business AS card. I do have FF accounts with both airlines.

  3. Gabriel says:

Yes got posted to my alaska account today 🙂

  4. Emily says:

I got it, spouse didn’t, and I did complete the wine promo — twice — with my Virgin account. Received 4k in Virgin and 10k in Alaska. Odd, but I’m happy!

  5. Brenton says:

I don’t have it. I have Alaska MVP Gold and Virgin Gold (can’t remember how I got it) and about 5 AS cards in the last year. Never actually flown with either airline though…

  6. Mser says:

Wife nor I received any miles but my father did. Father flew AS over Xmas. I haven’t flown AS in several years. Father has also flown Virgin in the last year so seems to be tied to recent flights

  7. Mike says:

I received the 10K points. I did NOT do the wine promo. I am Alaska MVP Gold. I have the Alaska Air Credit card, and I have never flown Virgin (only have the points from the Amex transfer for JetBlue Promotion).

  8. Alex says:

Wow, thanks for the heads up, I got this too! I didn’t complete the wine promotion and have no status on either Alaska or Virgin America. I do have two AS credit cards, however, a personal and a biz.

  9. John says:

Got it but not wife. Bith have VA accounts and Alaska account with exactly the same status. Did not do wine.

  10. VM says:

I just saw the 10k points on my account. I am Virgin Gold which now matched to MVP Gold. I didn’t do wine promotion. I have AS card but not Virgin card. I never flew AS but had 2 Virgin flights last year

  11. Jeremy says:

I got it. Never flown AS, had status or earned miles with either.

  12. Quinn says:

I got it, my wife did not. We both have two AS visas each, no special status. I have a VA elevate account with maybe 2,000 miles; wife does not.

  13. Al says:

I’ve never flown either airline (just an east coast resident that credits American and Delta flights to AS) but did have accounts for both and received the 10k.

    I’ll take it 🙂

  14. M says:

I got this too and I don’t even know what the wine promotion is.

  15. bob says:

i got it, and i barely have any miles (and no status or CCs) with either airline. i had 5K Alaska miles last year, but cashed it out for magazines after i decided i had no future with them.

    hmmm….

  16. J T says:

I have an account with alaska, but I never did anything with Virgin, I got diddly squat

  17. Kevin says:

I didn’t get it but wife did. Even though I have MVP gold just matched from United. She doesn’t have any status. Only difference is she had 1k miles in the acct I had a zero balance.

  18. Curtis says:

I got it, wife did not. No status with AK, no wine promo or anything else for either of us. I do have a virgin account, wife does not. Crossing fingers that if you just have a Virgin America account they are giving it. We’ll see!

  19. Roberto says:

I got it. No status with either airline, but do have an AS card (just got it a few weeks ago). No wine promo. Hoping they don’t claw it back!

  20. cliff says:

    6 Accounts:

Me: Got 10k miles – MVP Gold / Virgin Gold / 2 AS CC
GF: Got 10k miles – MVP Gold / Virgin nothing / no AS CC
Mom: No miles – no status / 1 AS personal CC
Dad: No miles – no status / 2 AS CC
Friend #1: Got 10k miles – MVP Gold / Virgin nothing / no AS CC
Friend #2: No miles – no status / no AS CC / Flew Business in July

  21. Laura says:

I didn’t get it. I’ve taken one flight with Alaska in last 24 months. None with Virgin, didn’t have Virgin account.

  22. Doodums8 says:

I think this has to do with having the accounts linked. AFAIK there’s no site to do this, but they did link up Alaska and Virgin America accounts about a month ago. People received an email titled “____, it’s a match. Now get set to reap the rewards!”
I got this but removed the link because it was an incorrect, unused Virgin America account of mine.
    Looks like I F’d up, because I didn’t receive 10k points.
    Also,
“Starting January 9, you will be able to convert Elevate points into Alaska Mileage Plan miles at a rate of 1.3 Mileage Plan miles per Elevate point.”

  23. Dave says:

Didn’t get it. I used to have the BofA AS card, but I PC’d it to something else months ago. I have a Virgin account, but no credit card. NO status with either.

  24. Van says:

I got the 10k miles as well.

AS member with no status with a handful of flights on them, Havent flown Virgin but do have an account with them.

  25. Coldagglutannin says:

I got it. Have a virgin america acct with no flights (a couple free 500 pt promos in the past) and a year old alaska ff acct which only had a single short domestic aeromexico flight credited.

  26. Tom says:

I got it but my wife did not get it. We both have Virgin America accounts

  27. Rob says:

I got it, wife didn’t. We both have cards. Not sure why I got it and not her. Pleasant surprise. Thanks for heads up DOC.

  28. Carly says:

I got the 10K points. Mileage accounts with both Alaska and Virgin, but no status. I have not purchased any wine or flown Alaska or Virgin in at least a year. No credit cards with either.

  29. LG says:

apparently I didn’t have an alaska air account, only virgin. Darn it, no points for me 🙁

  30. Kris says:

Didn’t get the miles. Alaska MVP, I have flown AS a lot during the last three years, have Virgin account as well but never flown with them. No credit cards with either.

  31. Paul says:

Thanks for the bonus miles AS. I hope it doesn’t disappear in the morning.

  32. DrDoctor says:

I’m Alaska MVP Gold w/ BofA bus CC, I flew Alaska in 2016, didn’t receive it. My wife though, with no status, no flights did receive it.
BTW How can you connect Alaska and Virgin America FF accounts? Or it will happen later?

  33. Steven H. says:

Virgin Gold matched to Alaska MVP Gold

    Received the 10k bonus

  34. Maury says:

Wife got them and I didn’t. She already booked a flight using those miles too.

  35. Oleg says:

I loged to my Alaska account … where do I check if I got the offer?

  36. fauxblogger says:

2 for 2 on 10K bonus in my family. Neither member has status on either nor has ever flown a segment on Alaska or Virgin.. Each member has Virgin Elevate account with a few thousand miles from AMEX offer/AirBNB portal bonus last year. Virgin Elevate account not linked to Alaska accounts, although exact match on name and address so perhaps a server-side link was made by IT dept., but very doubtful. No longer a BOA Alaska cardholder as cancelled four BOA Alaska cards last week in prep for a churn.

  37. oleg says:

can anyone please explain where do I check if I got the offer?

  38. Oleg says:

Thanks Maury … nothing for me

  39. AC says:

It sounds like if there are two people living at the same address, one person “may” get the bonus. I got the bonus and my husband didn’t and we have the same # of AS card and linked VS account.

  40. george says:

Just got the bonus on 1/8!

  41. Justin says:

To get the bonus you have to have both AS and VA mileage accounts. AS should have done a better job of announcing the bonus with an email or FB post. The number of people at the same address shouldn’t matter. My bonus miles just hit late this afternoon.

    • Ky says:

Just to clarify, I do not believe you have to have a AS account. Only a VA account. This bonus is a result of Alaska acquiring Virgin. Here is the wording from the email I received:

“Your Virgin America Elevate membership is paying off with Alaska Airlines.
You’re now a member of Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan™, one of the most generous travel rewards programs out there. Your benefits begin with your choice of 10,000 bonus miles or $100 off any Alaska-operated flight when you activate your account. With round-trip flights starting at 10,000 miles, plus taxes and fees*, you’ll have enough to start traveling right away.

Once you activate your account, you can get 30% more miles when you convert your Elevate points to Mileage Plan miles and then redeem your miles on Alaska, Virgin America, and our global airline partners…”

  42. Quinn says:

I just received an email announcing the 10k bonus miles! So it’s apparently an intentional bonus

  43. Calvin says:

Mileage Plan conditions of membership apply. Visit AlaskaAir.com/MemberTerms for details. Choice of 10,000 bonus miles or $100 discount is valid only for active members of Virgin America Elevate as of December 5, 2016 who were not members of Alaska Mileage Plan. Only one offer can be selected, and choice of offer cannot be changed after account activation. Qualifying members will have through January 31, 2017 to make their selection. Any individual may receive a maximum of one offer, even if they hold multiple separate Elevate accounts. Mileage Plan elite status is valid through December 31, 2017. You must meet the published Mileage Plan status qualification rules in calendar year 2017 in order to re-qualify for elite status in 2018.

  44. J.M. says:

What’s the better deal? 10,000 miles or $100 discount? I’ve got the option. Elevate member but new to Alaska.

I’ve never flown Alaska b/c they don’t serve many airports in southeast.

  45. Calvin says:

Need someone to post a datapoint – the Alaska Mileage Plan account number in the email offer for 10000 points is for a new account when I already have an Alaska Mileage Plan account with a different number. The email automatically fills in the account number for you, which in my case, is the new account number. Would I risk losing the 10000 miles if I put in the account number of my current Alaska Mileage Plan account instead?

    • Izzy says:

Same situation. I put in my existing # and it said that im “not eleg” for the offer. Then I used the new # they put in and it doesn’t either work. It says “We were unable to process your request. The information you entered matches an existing account”. DID I LOSE IT???

      • Izzy says:

Actually you have to look further in the email they sent and there is info for people who already have an account. “No need to activate a new Mileage Plan account if you already have one. Just let us know your existing account number We’ll automatically deposit 10,000 bonus miles in your account”
