The Offer
- Mph.bank is offering a $200 bonus when you open a new spend checking account. Bonus is broken down as follows:
- $100 when you set up a direct deposit and maintain it for 3 months and maintain a minimum balance of $1,000 each month for 3 consecutive months
- $100 when the direct deposit and $1,000 minimum monthly balance is maintained for 12 months
The Fine Print
- Get $100 after opening any mph.bank Spend (checking) account AND setting up a monthly Early Pay3 AND maintaining an average balance of $1,000 for 3 consecutive months.
- Get another $100 for maintaining the same requirements above for an additional 9 consecutive months.
- Offer not available to existing mph.bank Spend account customers or those who have closed a checking account in the last 12 months. Account must be in good standing (not be overdrawn) throughout the duration of the special.
- Each reward will be deposited to your new account by the 30th day after meeting the requirements.
- All bank account bonuses are treated as income/interest and as such you have to pay taxes on them
Avoiding Fees
Monthly Fees
The free spend checking account has no monthly fees to worry about (update: it looks like the free account requires a $500 direct deposit. I don’t actually think that is legal anymore but something to keep in mind).
Early Account Termination Fee
Unsure if there is any EATF.
Our Verdict
Update: Looks like this does require a direct deposit for even the first $100 bonus, making it not worth doing.
mph.bank has offered a $100 bonus in the past with much easier requirements and $365 with much harder requirements. The nice part of this new bonus is that you can get $100 of it without any direct deposit required, although if you put that $1,000 into a high yield savings account you would earn ~$40 over the same period. We will add this to our list of the best bank bonuses.

This appears to be a smaller bank. So it is hard to find information out there.
The verification process is very manual. I had to email them a photo id and two proofs of address.
They have some pretty low limits as far as how much they let you transfer out using ACH. For new accounts it is $50 for outgoing external transfers Incoming external transfers depends on the other bank. Zelle limit of $1000 daily and $3000 monthly. Limit will increase from $50 to $250 after your 91st day. For PayPal, Venmo, CashApp there is a $2500 per transaction limit up to 3 transactions per day.
I’m using this as my primary bank because the 5% is too good to pass up.Given all this restrictions I wouldn’t recommend using them as a secondary bank.
DP: CSR confirmed this requires average daily balance of $1000 as well as $1000 in DDs each month to qualify for that first $100. They denied me because my april total was only $500. I’m not going to bother sticking around for the latter 9 months portion.
Looks to be expired, link doesn’t work for me.
It appears that this $200 bonus can be combined with this $50 referral offer. The $50 appears to go to the referrer only. Are you going to create a referral code post?
https://smile.mph.bank/referral-program
No
So the referred party gets nothing from using a referral code to sign up? Meh
I thought it might be worthwhile to post about because the referred party would still receive the $200 (not a lesser offer). I understand why it wouldn’t be that popular though.
This must be the Hippie version of Red Neck Bank in except it isn’t a good deal at all.
I asked the bank for clarifications on the Free account. The customer service responded that there are no fees assessed with the Free account; however, there are requirements, such as the $500 direct deposit monthly to keep the account open. If you open the Free account, you do need to have a monthly direct deposit of $500 despite that it is free. What a tricky and ridiculous way of offering so-called free account!
I opened the free checking in Sept ’22, made a $500+ transfer from Chase in Oct and Nov, and then didn’t touch the account until I made a debit purchase in Feb ’23. No fees assessed and the account was not closed.
This stupid smiley face Bank will pull Chex twice from two different locations if you aren’t instant approved and go to review.
The $365 bonus had a lot of hoops, but a decent payout. This $200 bonus takes away one hoop and cuts the payout almost in half. With all the tasty but Chex-sensitive offers recently, I don’t think this is worth the hit.
ETA: Also, it’s not worth disqualifying yourself should the $365 come back.
Don’t worry about the ridiculousness of this bank and its terms. You probably won’t get approved anyway. I got rejected for no reason (my chex is clean, my credit is 800+, no debt. I will say that I am at the 5/24 limit on credit cards until May 2023, but credit card usage generally has no effect on banks? I just opened a Laurel Road account with no problems last week!)
Free checking account requires $500/month in direct deposits. Friends checking account requires 15+ monthly debit card transactions to keep fee free. Probably more trouble than it’s worth.
Yeah, that kind of ruins it. It’s possible to schedule a daily Amazon gift card reload of $.50. then just use the money for amazon purchases or other gift cards. But it’s kind of troublesome.
