2x Fuel Points at Stop&Shop/Giant on Mastercard Gift Cards is Back, 7/31-8/6

The Offer

Direct Link (Gaint ad page 6) Direct Link (Stop&Shop ad page 6)

  • Purchase Mastercard gift cards at Giant or Stop & Shop stores and receive 2x gas points on the purchase.

stop shop giant 2x mc gc deal

Visa/Mastercard gift cards usually don’t earn gas points at all. Occasionally, they’ll run a promo offering points on them and even bonusing the purchase with extra points. This time it’s double points on Mastercard gift card purchases. As an example, if you buy one $500 Mastercard gift card you’ll get 1000 points, worth $1.00 off each gallon of gas, up to 35 gallons or a $35 value.

The Fine Print

  • Offer valid from 7/31/15 – 8/6/15.
  • Must use Stop&Shop/Giant rewards card in order to get the points (and to redeem them as well).
  • Be sure to check out your own local stores to make sure that they are running this offer and that the details are the same.

Our Verdict

This is an awesome promo which keeps on coming. I’m loving the $.50 gas prices which I’ve been paying for the past few months straight. It’s particularly useful since buying Visa/Mastercard gift cards at supermarkets can really be a profitable venture in any event, by using a card that earns bonus points at supermarkets, such as Amex Blue Cash, Amex Everyday and so many more. See Best Credit Card For Grocery Store Purchases.

You can only do one $500 card per transaction without needing an override. (Asking to split each card into a separate transaction works.) If you’re doing higher than $2,000, you need to do it at customer service. Max $5000 per day. They usually copy down your driver’s license number on large gift card purchases.

Bear in mind that this time around the deal is on Mastercard gift cards and not Visa cards. These function beautifully as a debit cards in Target, but less so at Walmart. [There are more advanced ways to use them as debit cards at Walmart.] The PIN comes on a little slip hidden inside the packaging.

Gas Points Details

Every 100 points gets you 10¢ off per gallon at Shell, up to 35 gallons. If you have 1000 points, you’ll get $1 off. If you have 2200 points, you’ll get $2.20 off per gallon.

  • Max discount in some areas is $2.20. In other areas there is no max.
  • You have 30 days to use the points. Day of purchase is Day #1.
  • Points must be used nearby your store location – they can’t be used at a Shell far away from home. Points can only be used at partner Shell stations and those Shell stations tend to be in the area where the supermarket chain (be it S&S or Giant) is located. You can redeem the points in a completely different area from where you got the points, but only if that Shell station is a partner. Check out the gas locator for Stop & Shop and for Giant for exact listings of which Shell stations are included.
  • See this post and the FAQ for more details. Some of the details vary by area and store.
  • Points usually are available immediately, but I’ve had on occasion where it took a day until they showed up and were usable.

Since gas prices currently hover around $2.70 per gallon, your gas will be $.50 per gallon, or free in some areas.

(Pro tip: use a Shell gift card  and you’ll usually get the cash price. Those who are good at math will realize why it’s worthwhile to pay with cash or gift card when using fuel points.)

Sample Deal Scenarios

  • If you think you’ll need only 1 fill-up during the month, buy two $500 gift card and get $2 off per gallon. Or buy three $500 gift cards and get $2.20 off the fill-up.
  • If you think you’ll need 2 fill-ups during the month, buy five $500 gift cards for a total of 5000 points and you’ll get $2.20 off both fill-ups.
  • If you think you’ll need 3 fill-ups during the month, buy seven $500 gift cards for 7000 points and you’ll get $2.20 off the 3 fill-ups.
  • Etc.

This is really a good time to pull out those grocery-bonus credit cards and put them to work. It could also make sense to do one gift card run at the beginning of the offer period and a second run at the end to lengthen the life of the points. Some stores can run out of gift cards though so keep that in mind.

I’ve read different conflicting reports concerning max $ amount of GC’s can be bought per day @ S&S. Does anyone know what the amount is? I’ve read $2K & $5K.

Also, I’ve read that based on where you live, will determine where you can get the discount @ Shell. My Daughter lives in Delaware and I live in NJ. Do you think I can give her my S&S card to use in Delaware? Thanks in advance to anyone who can answer these questions!

I suppose you could call. There was a bit of a hold time, but the representative was well aware of the problem and immediately explained it. Hold time maybe 8 minutes. Seems easier to check there, if you’re going to be in the general area anyway.

800-767-7772. Stopandshop.com. I don’t know hours, I did call in the day. You could call station, but I wouldn’t count on them knowing.

I just logged into my account and see that it says “Service currently not available.” Does that mean the website is down or that the whole service is still down? Have you been able to reach anyone about the issues? I see that they are only available M-F 9am – 5pm ET. The website shows a different phone # that you wrote (1-877-366-2668).

I just filled up 29.25 gallons for $10.50. Working just fine in Jersey. Three months of cheap gas. Hoping for another Visa or Mastercard 2X or 3X soon.

my shell stations participate but each time I try to use my 8800 points (twice in the past few days) the pump only offers my 10 cents off per gallon. Same thing happened at 2 different shell stations. Called stop and shop who extended my expiration date but is otherwise unable to help. Is anyone else having this problem?

I just had this happen today (posted on new stop and shop deal comments). The person I spoke with told me there is a glitch and the gas stations are “offline”. They can’t connect to your account, see your actual balance or deduct any points. The 10 cents off is “complimentary”. I don’t know when they expect to fix it. It’s best to confirm the discount is showing up before pumping gas ( for those who don’t always check, like me).

Chuck, there are 4 Shells within 3 or 4 miles of my house and 1 of them doesn’t participate in this program. Not all Shells do.

Is it possible to earn points in one state and redeem in another.. Since in VA the max off per gallon is $2.20.. Can I redeem my points in an upcoming trip to PA where there is no such limit?

I fill up 7 times per month, averaging 22 gal. per fill. Bought about $14K GC’s @ Stop & Shop over the last 2X & 3X offers. Bought another $2K this morning. I’ll miss this when it goes away. However the math shows that 1X will work for me, w/ beak even @ 12 gal. fill w/ $2.00 off.

Here in south central PA and maybe elsewhere that have Weis markets they have this 2X gas points everyday. At least that what it comes out too. I get 10 cents a gallon off on buying $50 worth of stuff which also includes GC. It comes out to $1 of a gallon on $500 GC. and they have visa GC.

Can someone please explain to me how I can cash these Master Card GCs out to my Bluebird? I’ve done it with Visa GCs, but never Master Card GCs.

Thank you!

Thank you for your post! Just a note, bullet point #3 maybe not correct. I consistently fill up 70+ miles away from Stop and Shop that is my “home” store. In NJ any Shell station that participates will honor this deal if they swipe your S&S card. You can find participating stations on S&S website. So you can earn points in Cape May and fill up in in Newtown, if you wish.

Also, if you love your family and friends, call S&S customer service, request 3 more cards, give these to loved ones and tell them to go to their nearest Shell… So if you MS a lot or drive a Chevy Volt, your extra points will get used and not expire in a month.

Cheers,

PedroNY

It also works across state lines in some cases. Got the points in NYC and filled up in Mahwah, NJ.

They do participate, but not all. I just go and ask, or see if they have the stop and shop card on the pump. There may be a better way to check, idk.
