Update 1/11/2019: Bonus is now 60,000 miles after one purchase (previously required $2,000 in spend).

Reddit user BrickTaunter reports that the deal is active again, this time no expiry date is listed and flight crew weren’t sure when it expired. Looks like this might just be an ongoing promotion now. Thanks to reader Nates for also sending this in

Our Verdict

I’m not sure why more airlines don’t do in flight paper apps that actually offer higher than normal bonuses. I would have thought customer acquisition costs would be low enough that it would be worth doing but usually the opposite is the case on most airlines (e.g they offer you 35,000 miles inflight compared to 50,000 miles online). Either way this is the highest bonus we’ve seen on the Hawaiian card, previous best was 50,000 miles.

In terms of what to do with the miles:

  • You can get flights for 35,000 miles round trip with the card from mainland USA to Hawaii, but there isn’t a lot of space available.
  • Intra island flights are 7,500 miles one way
  • You can also transfer the miles to Hilton at a rate of 1:1.5 (although I’d say this is a bad use of points)

As always if you have any questions about Barclays credit cards, read this post first. I won’t be adding this to the list of the best credit card offers due to the fact it’s in flight only.

Does it need to be submitted in flight? Or could someone theoretically take a few off of the plane and give them to others to fill out?

I’m interested in this question as well. My aunt, uncle, and cousins are moving from Oahu to the Big Island soon, and i’m considering asking them to grab and mail me a paper app

It is *not* required to be filled out – it is Business Reply Mail, so someone could take a few off the plane, and Jeff, your family could mail you one.

The applications that I received on my trip home to Hawaii on 5/16/19 didn’t have to be filled out in flight. However, they had to be turned in by 5/31/19. Hope that helps..

Considering JFK-HNL one-way biz is 80k miles minimum (because saver level is NEVER available), this offer is still weak.
I would pick up this card fr 100k miles.

If I could get two apps through in a day with this offer, I’d do it. But, not likely given Barclay’s policies and the logistics of when that paper app would process

Other uses include two pair of Maui Jim sunglasses for 25k each ($600 +/- value) and Jet Blue flights

Most airlines probably offer worse bonuses in-air because they are targeting less discriminating customers. Applicants who sign up on a whim, without the ability to price-compare mile offers with online offers or competitors are worth the focus, even if missing out on churners looking for an extra 10k.

Not to mention those who are already using the airline are probably more likely to use the miles while there are many who sign up online who never do.

7500 inter-Hawaii one way is a good deal, not sure if any other redemptions are worth it considering the alternatives out there (ecsprcially BA to/from west coast).

Nice that it’s a MasterCard. Would consider @ 60k but alas haven’t flown them in a few years so no paper app for me.

I’d argue this is a better deal (and it’s available online):

lazytravelers.net/hawaiian-airlines-credit-card-offer-40000-miles-waived-annual-fee/

40,000 miles and the $89 fee waived.

I disagree. The extra 20k points can be half a ticket worth $3-400.

Are the card benefits still the same? I got a flyer in the mail stating changes as of July 19, 2018:

Earn 3x Hawaiianmiles on eligible purchases made directly from Hawaiian Airlines
Earn 2x Hawaiiamiles on gas, dining and grocery store purchases
Earn 1x Hawaiianmiles on all other purchases
Your account changes will be reflected on your August billing statement

An additional change will also be made to your account as of July 11, 2018, the anniversary bonus will no longer be a benefit of the card. However, as an existing cardmember, you’ll have the remainder of your current cardmembership year to earn 5,000 bonus Hawaiianmiles by spending $10,000 on purchases

Continue to enjoy:
$100 companion discount annually
Free FIRST (emphasis added) checked bag on eligible bags
No foreign tranasction fees

I live in Hawaii but it’s Barclays, and from experience with applying for Barclay cards the past 2.5 years, they will only approve me for a Aviator Red card and only if I don’t have any card open with them.

I don’t see anywhere on the paper or online app the 2x miles on gas, dining and grocery.

I just returned from Hawaii a couple weeks ago. Was offered the same deal 60,000 mile, 1/2 companion fare. I turned my application into the stewardess and never heard anything. I phone Barclays they said they don’t have any paper work of the application. So now what??? Someone has all my private info.

No one ever checks my transunion when applying except Barclays, so I thought a credit inquiry is no biggie and applied online for 60k after $2k and got:

—————————————————————————————————–
We appreciate your interest in the Hawaiian Airlines® Bank of Hawaii World Elite Mastercard.

Unfortunately, we are not able to provide you with an immediate decision on the application you just submitted.
Your application requires further review, which can take up to 10 days.

We will notify you in writing in no more than 30 days (and often sooner) about the status of your application.
———————————————————————————————————

This is usually a denial, and I went to check my application status.
Currently we are unable to offer you a credit card issued by Barclays Bank Delaware. Details on why we could not make you a credit offer will be mailed to you.

Of course, Barclays never mail me anything or send me anything by email to explain.

The paper app shows AF as $99, but post reads $89. I’m guessing they upped the AF for 2019?

Annual fee is waived the 1st year, then it’s $99 on this offer.

The Hawaiian award chart is a major ripoff on both Hawaiian and the partners’. I’ve had 200K+ for years without being able to find the right redemption for them. I think I’ve already bought 500 miles twice over the years to extend the expiration date, and the new one is looming in March. But then I’m stubborn like that, always looking for a good deal even when there are none.

The only decent use of HawaiianMiles I can think of is 125K for Virgin Atlantic in Upper Class between the East Coast and London. Last time I checked they didn’t charge YQs, but that was years ago. Hopefully, it’s still the case.
