Our Verdict

60,000 miles is frequently available, but normally the annual fee is not waived first year. In this case it is waived first year, making this offer particularly attractive. In terms of what to do with the miles:

  • You can get flights for 35,000 miles round trip with the card from mainland USA to Hawaii, but there isn’t a lot of space available.
  • Intra island flights are 7,500 miles one way
  • You can also transfer the miles to Hilton at a rate of 1:1.5 (although I’d say this is a bad use of points)
  • They also sell sunglasses (I forget the brand and amount, but seems to be a popular redemption)

As always if you have any questions about Barclays credit cards, read this post first. Keep in mind getting approved for Barclays cards can be extremely difficult (6/24 rule). I will be adding this to our list of the best credit card bonuses.

Any points where a good redemption is buying sunglasses are a sad statement on the game.

Maybe it’s a good way to use up orphaned points.

LOL.
Although to be fair, if you actually want those sunglasses the cash price is more than many flights. Resale value would be good.

Hard to find round trip flights from the mainland for less than 50k miles. I can’t find a single redemption for 35k. I see a lot that are 100k for one economy ticket though. Hawaiian miles are pretty worthless but you can transfer them to Hilton at least for now.

This card isnt worth much anymore, the most recent devaluation made it very difficult to get a reasonable redemption. If you live near PHX then you can still find 17.5k OWs to HNL otherwise its nowhere near that anymore in other markets. Hawaiians east coast destinations you cost you would need two of these cards signup bonuses to get one RT ticket on a lot of dates now.

With points that are hard to redeem. Getting 90k hilton points instead might not be a bad idea

+1
That’s what I finally did after holding 63 K mikes for 2 years+.
So hard to use these miles for a decent flight award.

It also includes a one-time 50% off companion ticket discount.

I bet this is just as hard to use

Not hard to use the 1/2 fare. As long as you pay for one full price coach fare and a seat is available you get it right away. I did this last month.

I just got this card with the intent of redeeming the 60k points to cover my flight and then use the 50% companion discount for my wife. Did I misread the terms? TIA

To get the 1/2 companion discount you need to pay your ticket at full price (no miles), you can’t use miles and get the 50% companion discount.

Why would anyone in the hobby buy tickets with low-cost award options with Avios/Turkish?

Lantean
Lantean

Because the real value of Hawaiian miles is buying a cheap coach ticket and then upgrading it with miles.
That’s the only reasonable way of getting EWR-HNL or BOS-HNL biz class seats.

I believe the sunglasses are Maui Jim’s.

They need to double the signup bonus offering to make it at least somewhat useful under the new award costs.

BOH (Bank of Hawaii) was offering 75k Hawaiian miles as a signup bonus recently when getting their credit card (which is underwritten by Barclay’s). I would wait for that bonus to come back up or a better one. Maybe a 100k offer is just around the corner?

What do you do after the annual fee hits? Do you just ask to downgrade?

chong786
chong786

ask for the retention offer. if you don’t want to keep it, then cancel. no downgrade option

The sunglasses are Maui Jim’s. They’re a great brand, especially the lens

FYI for anyone looking at this redemption option, these sunglasses run from $170 to $480, so resale value is decent.

This card falls under the 6/24?

Barclay’s 6/24 rule is a soft rule … ymmv,

I have an Excellent+ credit score. Never a single late payment in my 30 year credit history. Don’t excessively churn. Always get approved for all other cards. NEVER approved by Barclays. I’ve given up!

You might call their reconsideration line and ask why.

Barclay Personal and Business card, how frequently can they be churned? Any restrictions like Citi 48 month or Chase 5/24 rule?

Read the post – it’s about 1 minute read…

7,500 inter-island isn’t terrible assuming those are available. The free bag would be a good deal if your other option is paying $25 extra per trip.

Was on an Hawaiian Airline flight from Honolulu to Lihei, Kauai yesterday and there was an announcement on the plane on arrival that this offer is expiring on Sept. 5th.

PSA – there is a business version of this card also giving 60k points. However, on that one the AF is not waived, nor do you get 1st bag for free.

The application form on the landing site through the direct link posted above in the article now shows $99 annual fee for the 1st year (i.e. not waived for the 1st year).
However, FYI this form through Hawaii Airline website still shows the fee being waived the 1st year https://cards.barclaycardus.com/banking/cards/hawaiian-airlines-world-elite-mastercard/

This no longer shows AF being waived.

I have a question, some cc applications say “household income”.. I usually include my partner’s income. This application doesn’t say household income.. would there be any legal issue potentially including partner’s income in my “total annual income”? I’d like to get this card. Actually, I have savings from several years ago when I was working, and I always repay my credit card balances from my savings, and thus have a high credit score.

I always get conflicted on this question… because I see a new card that I really want (I want the miles), but my income is very small.. so I try to look for instances where I could income my partner of father’s retirement income (he lives with us) in the total income slot, without worrying about getting in trouble.

I’ve actually never asked this question anywhere on the Internet, though it’s been on my mind for a few years. Thanks for any insight

Can anyone help me figure out HOW to transfer miles to Hilton Card? I can’t find it on the site. Thanks!

Annual fee not waived now? I see the fee now for the 1st year.

I live in Hawaii and I don’t even see value in this. I know people who are trying to earn mikes and have had the card for years spending a total of almost 500 in annual fees and they still have not earned enough for one round trip to the mainland. They could have used what they paid in fees for an actual trip. Even redeeming UR points for inter island southwest flights is much more sound.

Going to Hawaii? No? Then see that little X in the upper-right corner of the screen. Click it.

Doc Newsletter stated: “Barclays is offering 60,000 miles on the Hawaiian card with no annual fee.” The detail should be corrected to state that the first annual fee is “waived.”
